White Lies - Big TV
White Lies have always had a consistent sound that has gradually, if slowly, progressed to their third studio album Big TV. The sound to the album is big, it sits nicely between their first two albums actually, but this album feels like a step in the right direction from Ritual. The band are as good as ever at writing catchy songs like “There Goes Our Love Again”, but also still manage to throw in some really lacklustre songs.
“There Goes Our Loves Again” along with “Getting Even” are the immediate stand outs on first listen. Both are energetic, have great melodies that are perfect for humming and the latter really sounds like a stadium filler. On repeat listens though, “Mother Tongue” creeps out and taps you on the shoulder. It’s big, and it is all about the chorus, which is really the White Lies formula.
However, the album has really little to grasp. You can get the sound of the album, of the band, just in a snapshot, and there is really little to hold onto and cherish, because apart from these standout songs the rest remain limp. “Change” has the lyric, I’ve never been too good at change , and I know that this is related to the story of the album, about a couple moving to a big city, but I can’t help feel that it reflects the band. Their sound has changed slightly, and you may get songs stuck in your head that you think are from Big TV, but are in fact from their back catalogue.
Overall, Big TV is a safe album for White Lies, is predictable and it is their usual affair that you may love. It’s grand sounds at points, and it atmospheric down tempo jaunts make it enjoyable on the surface, but it lacks any real depth.
