Russell Whyte a.k.a. Rustie has spawned the antidote to nightclub ennui. This is a record for every person who’s ever stood on the dancefloor bored, contemplating where modern music went wrong and saying to their mates – “we’ll see what the next song is and then get a taxi home”. Rustie doesn’t want you to leave. Electronic music has scarcely been this euphoric, inclusive and produced with such fearlessness in maximalist innovation since Daft Punk were going round the world one more time. The music is powerful: so huge that it’s tottering, bordering on unwieldy (Death Mountain and Crystal Echo), but absolutely irresistible, packed with perfectly timed hooks and drops (Ultra Thizz) that each seemingly trying to outdo one another, a barrage of hands in the air moments that result in one of the finest records to emerge post-dubstep. And even if you don’t like the music at least we can both agree that Rustie is the proud owner of perhaps the most hilarious unintentionally phallic album cover of all time.
