Tune-Yards - w h o k i l l
Just when you thought the year's music couldn't get any better here comes the release that puts all the doubters to one side. 2011 IS a vintage year for music. WHOKILL is an astonishing record simply for its scope. On her first album, Bird-Brains, Merrill Garbus showed us how she could twist the ukelele into a lead instrument and how she could mix hip-hop, world music and electronic into one for a truly experimental album but one which was worth all the praise.
On this record she extends her scope further and gives us a more polished record (as it was recorded in a studio not on the free shareware program, Audacity). "My Country" kicks the album off perfectly bringing jazz trumpets and pure scat singing to the fore together with pulsating lyrics and throughout the record nothing dissapoints but for standouts look to "Es-So", "Gangsta", lead single "Bizness" and great album ender "Killa". A stunning record which as ended the album of the year lists as far back as April!
