St. Vincent - Marry Me
Do a debut right, and you’ve got yourself quite a promising career as a musician. Blow ‘em away, and they’ll be in awe of you. And boy, was I in awe. This debut album, from start to finish, was quite a gem. “Now, Now” is a great opener, and “What Me Worry” is a great closer. “Human Racing” differs from the rest for having this jazz-like vibe to it with a bit of trumpet and the quitar work. “The Apocalypse Song” starts light with the guitar and then it gets louder and when combined with Clark’s voice, it’s a beautiful song. I think the only complaints I had with this album were “We Put a Pearl in the Ground,” a song I felt tried too hard to be a beautiful bridge between the first and last parts. This is one of those few debut albums that you can listen from start to finish and pretty much love completely. And it’s a great starting point for getting into Annie’s work. Overall, one of the best albums of 2007 that I didn’t get the chance to discover sooner, with it’s quirky melodies, fabulous vocal work, and excellent songwriting.
