Alcohol, the content of drinks

JezCC [Edit] [Delete] 14:03, 5 June '07

Why are the guidelines you get told so far out?

A glass of wine.... 1 unit
NO!

Glass of wine = 1/6 bottle
750/6 ml = 125ml

assuming your wine is 13% ABV
125 x 13/100 = 16.25ml of alcohol
16.25/10 = 1.6 units

This means that a middle aged person who can;t be arsed to do the maths will drink 4 glasses of wine thinking they aren't harming themselves, when in fact they have drunk 6.5 units of alcohol. Officially binge drinking.

We need to scrap the old units system because people don't understand it.

Weird rant, I know, but middle aged people who drink 6 glasses of wine a night and tell me that they aren't doing themselves any harm anger me.
