"Australian Big Brother has been criticised after it was revealed that a contestant has not been told that her father has died.

Emma Cornell has been shut inside the house for over a month and does not know that her father Raymond died of cancer last week.

Producers defended their decision, saying keeping the death of Mr Cornell from daughter Emma, 24, had been what the family wanted.

Her boyfriend, Tim Stanton, said that it had been the father's direct wish that Ms Cornell was not informed in the event of his death.

He told a newspaper: "He didn't want to ruin the experience for her. She might be upset when she comes out and finds out what has happened but I think she'll understand."

Last year Australian Prime Minister John Howard called for the hit show to be cut after two male housemates were shown groping a female contestant."
