Use of the Internet

Over the past few years the general use of the internet for both work and leisure purposes has increased significantly and with that in mind the internet section of the Information and security policy has been reviewed and updated.

We are pleased to advise that as part of the review a few of the restrictions have been lifted, therefore it is now permissible to:

§ access on-line banking

§ shop on line

before or after your normal work hours, or during lunchtime.

We understand that a number of colleagues have in the nature of their work, cause to access the internet. However, whilst reviewing the policy we carried out a monitoring exercise and regrettably it became apparent that in a number of instances some individuals have misused the internet to an excessive level. The nature of this includes:

· spending excessive time on the internet for personal use

· accessing inappropriate sites e.g. chat-rooms

Please be aware that the company has the right to carry out a regular review of internet logs including monitoring at an individual level if deemed necessary. This also applies to the misuse of the email system. In cases of clear misuse, disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal will be taken against individuals identified as misusing this facility.
