Describe your band's sound for someone who hasn't heard you:
The Clash meets Television whilst hustling Iggy Pop in a dark alleyway.
Brief band history:
Originally formed many moons ago for a one-off appearance in a pub car park, The Cheesemakers have gone from strength to strength since then. The band quickly worked up a set of original songs and set their stall out to go against the grain of cover band domination in their native North East, a manifesto which has now began to reap rewards.
The speed and dexterity with which the band went about assembling a good live set was demonstrated by the fact that very few of the original songs in that 1st gig survived this far. Material is constantly replaced by newer, fresher models. Check out the early set lists in Hesh's forthcoming archive section for the evidence of songs you haven't heard of (many of which are available on the early cassettes). Carefully nurturing their collective influences of Television, Iggy Pop, The Jam, The Clash, The Who and The Kinks, a sound developed which was truly their own. A succinct blend of crashing power chords and fluid choruses infest every Cheesemakers song and quickly lure the listener in with instant hum-ability.
Delve deeper and you find influences as diverse as Elvis Costello, Spirit, U2, Pavement, The Doors and early Adam & The Antz. See the section hidden within the pages of this site for more influences.
After establishing an underground reputation with demo recordings of instant hits such as 'Fly Buster' and 'The Big Hairy Wheel' and their 17 minute magnum opus 'These Things Happen So What Does It Mean?' the band fortuitously stumbled into an agreement with the fledgling ChangesOne Record Label to cut an EP. Reviews of the demo album 'It's Toasted' and the rough, raw and ready live album 'Live Up The Oriface' had been encouraging, with a 7 month stay in Get Rhythm Magazine's Top 10 the highlight. So with confidence, the band stepped into a studio to record the eclectic 'White Trash EP' for ChangesOne and it was released in November 2001 to rave reviews and a steadily building reputation.
Healthy sales and occasionally crazy reactions and reviews have resulted in the unexpected but deserved elevation of The Cheesemakers into genuine title contenders, a task which they are undoubtedly up for.
Higher profile gigs and tours are happening more often and opportunities are arising for prestigious contributions to various tribute/compilation albums. The band have been asked for tracks on a Paul Weller tribute and a Tom Verlaine/Television tribute album, the result of which can be found as track 5 on White Trash.
Various appearances on compilation albums and guest appearances at other record label gigs continue to raise the stock in the band as they move towards the much anticipated release of their debut album 'proper' in the spring of 2004 on their new record label , having parted company with C1 .
