Tarkio were formed in Missoula, Montana in 1996 when a young(er) Colin Meloy recruited a banjo player at an open mic night and soon gathered friends and friends of friends. The results were one self-released EP 'Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors and the album 'I Guess I Was Hoping For Something More'. They disbanded in 1999 before Meloy became ringleader of The Decemberists.
