Emerging out of teenage girls bedrooms Mary Jane started out as an adolescent dream with singer Teri and guitarist Rachel growing up songwriting together in their home town of Huddersfield.
The dream became increasingly concrete and through various line ups, make ups and break ups the present line up of Mary Jane came together in 2004 with Teri Flynn on vocals and bass, Rachel Goulding on guitar and Ben Carter on drums.
Their divergent influences leads you to imagine the confusion of being in a band together but it's their desire and love of making music together keeps them firmly in place for the ride. There's no idealistic transcendental message that Mary Jane claim to explore. They're not a band to place themselves on some purist pedestal but take the stuff of the human experience as the blank page for their short blasts of punk rock melodic brutality.
Drawing on a range of personal raw experiences of heartbreak, loss, and longing to narratives of survival and in yer face critiques of societal expectations upon women. Mary Jane combine the range of emotions, dilemmas and drama common to anyone who's been in any kind of relationship or set foot outside their front door.
Teri's voice is what might happen if you cross Brody Dalle and cinder block fist-fighting in a dark street. It's sweet, scything, melodic, raw and gutsy.
Mary Jane have been touring mostly in the Yorkshire and surrounding area. After a recent jaunt to Prague to record their album for Huddersfield label Timeless Music Project produced by Killing Joke's notorious guitarist Geordie.
The future looks brighter and brighter for Mary Jane with their debut single release, national tours and European festivals planned for the very near future.
