"Formed in Manchester, England, A Witness shared the distinctive sound adopted by the Ron Johnson label acts: fast, quirky songs bearing an obvious debt to both Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu. The band was formed by Keith Curtis (vocals), Rick Aitken (b. 18 August 1956, d. October 1989; guitar) and Vince Hunt (bass). An EP, Loudhailer Songs, in 1985, attracted the New Musical Express, who included the band on their seminal C86 sampler tape. An album, I Am John's Pancreas, followed in 1986, featuring manic, awkward guitar riffs and offbeat lyrics. Alan Brown was subsequently recruited to replace the band's drum machine. After the release of another EP, One Foot In The Groove, in 1988, the Ron Johnson label folded, prompting a short-lived period at Fundamental Records who issued A Witness' second album, Sacred Cow Heart. The Membranes' Vinyl Drip label was responsible for the band's next and possibly finest single, "I Love You, Mr. Disposable Razors', in 1989. Sadly, Aitken died in a climbing accident the same year and the band subsequently folded. Strange Fruit Records released a mini-album compiling A Witness' two 1988 sessions for BBC disc jockey John Peel. The band also covered the Doors' "Break On Through" on a tribute album to the music of 1967, Through The Looking Glass. Curtis went on to play with the Membranes and Gold Blade, while Hunt and Brown reunited in Marshall Smith in the late 90s."
