There is absolutely no way in the world
that any shirts back from when I bought band t-shirts will ever fit me now...
For fans of The Lucksmiths
Darren Hanlon is another Aussie gem who I think is on Fortuna in the UK. HIs album 'Fingertips and Mountaintops' is consistently brilliant songwriting for those who like a bit of wistful, lyrical songwriting.
Got my tickets for their Belfast show
What a great band.
Their set at Electric Picnic 2006 is one my favourite gigs ever - and they didn't even play Switching Off.
To clarify
There is nothing cringeworthy about this article, it just reminded me of back then...
^^^
This.
More than anything else
this reminds me of the cringeworthy editorial when the first Bloc Party album came out... they were without question a DiS band then, but are they now?
I think compared to a lot of the DiS readership my tastes are fairly mainstream, and as (in my perception) the site has gotten more indie I visit much less than I used to.
That said, the massive enthusiasm for the likes of The National (and indeed Bloc Party at the time) have led me to great bands I would otherwise have heard of much later, or not at all.
I don't like being critical
But in all seriousness, what's the point of this article? What in it hasn't been seen or heard a million times before?
Billy Bragg? Check.
Thatcher? Check.
RATM? Check.
The Clash? Check.
Dylan? Check.
Woody Guthrie as father figure? Check.
Bill Hicks? Check.
"It’s not that great a leap to say that much modern socially-conscious music stems from Woody Guthrie."
It's not that great a leap partly because every single article in a similar vein has regurgitated that thought. It might even be true - but I wonder how many people would even recognise a Woody Guthrie song if they heard it - I knew of that received opinion long before I heard any of his stuff.
I lol'ed
and then felt bad.
They want to sort out the name of that award
It's clearly meant to sound wacky and zany but it makes them sound like cunts.
It reminds of Colin Hunt off the fast Show.
Yeah
I like White Ladder too. I don't feel much need to listen to it now, but I liked it at the time.
Point of Order
I tried to get this in both HMV and Virgin and discovered it's not out till next Monday
This
Did not receive the credit it deserves.
Lots of redeemable qualities.
No redeeming ones.
This lot were on R1
the other night, the songs they did were pretty inoffensive.
They sounded about 12 though - Lamacq asked them about their previous jobs and got 'well I was a paper boy' from one of them.
Shorely Wall
was a good tune as far as i remember
to be fair
i'd like to see how mark morriss did in 'county'
Holy Shit
The Lucksmiths - I love 'em! Seeing on them has made me rather delighted this afternoon.
I like Bell X1
However I expect that they would not be favoured by the DiS massive...

The last album is pretty poor, but i liked Reveal in a 'fairly catchy but nothing new' kind of way.

Oasis
...but there have been at least some really positive reviews of every album they've released since (and this isn't a comment on this review, it being of a single gig) and despite that they've all been pretty turd.

Yeah
That's how it works, if you review old stuff a cosmic force prevents you from also reviewing new stuff.
