Lazy Boy
So as per most weeks saturday is an opportunity to catch up with the weeks postbag, and start to wade through the hours of new music. Always exciting, are the packages from new record labels, eager to capture eyes and ears and hawk their wares.
This weeks top pick is the new Lazy Acre label based in Northampton. Ive been vaguely aware of these guys for a little while now but only recently have they begun to dip their toes into the waters of physical releases.
The first of these is from one of my favourite recent discoveries ADAM GNADE. I first came across Adam via his split ep with Youthmovies last year and have since been devouring the back catalogue.
Adams new record "We Are Ghosts and Bones Down Stone Walled Wells" is an intense 35 minute suite of one track, made up of 13 sections (including a Donovan cover) and fills an interesting gap between the banjo plucking troubadour and the laptop weilding experimentalist hinted at across various parts of the back catalogue.
The record fills a bleak space, all deafening crescendos and pin drop silences, at once soothing and abbrasive.
Sitting atop this maelstrom of post rock noise is Adams vocals however. Always the focal point of any Gnade release, Adams drawled spoken word dragging the listener in and placing them front and centre to witness his characters decline into dark swathes of drugs, alchohol and meaningless sex... a seedy world somehow made romantic through the narrators heartsick tales of blowing on the breeze of life with no ballast to bring you down.
That a small operation like the lazy acre guys have laid their hands on a record like this is quite a coup for which they should be warmly rewarded.
Lets hope to see many more in the canon in the coming months.
