phantom band
are pretty damn "indie schmindie", aye. most of the time they either sound like a weird de-svengalied alternate universe version of snow patrol, or a crap scottish version of wilco circa 2003. or a mix of the two
i almost put "apart from camera obscura..." at the start of my post, but decided to err on the side of cruelty and simplicity. i like that record
and i will love aidan and malcolm forever but ive really struggled to like any solo stuff either has done
all of those are
just the same pointless miserable indie schmindie shite we've come to expect every year squeezed from out of the gaps in the clenched fists of glasgow's indie schmindie mafia. at least glasvegas are doing something new, even though they're terrible
if you find one of the sticks then burn it
will that 15 seconds of the song be lost forever?
.
peacebone, who could win a rabbit, my girls, fireworks...pop songs, no?
i'd like to know how someone could "really listen" to lily allen (im familiar with the first album and have listened to this twice through) though, so explain please if you would
its a very disappointing and very poor album
but the dig about looks is, as the above posters have already stated, beyond pathetic.
i didnt know what juanita or any of the band looked like before i went to see them live, at which point i had developed an appreciation for the debut album. i didnt love it, or even like it enough to find out what the band looks like out of curiosity, but i liked it enough. and to say juanita doesnt have an outstanding voice (i.e. it stands out from the herd) is simply wrong
its depressingly amusing how the indie male fraternity is all too happy to lavish constant ludicrous "swoon!", "she's so beautiful" and "couldnt keep my eyes off of her!" type embarassing bullshit at absolutely fucking ANY girl in an indie band who is at the level of ordinary looking or above (rolo tomassi singer, the girls in the dirty projectors, the girls in los campesinos, dave berman's wife, etc etc etc) yet when it comes to music they dont like, the first thing they use to bash them is their gender and perceived above-average attractiveness. y'know, along the lines of "would anyone like them if they were fat men?". would anyone like fucking mogwai any BETTER if they were hot bikini babes?
im off to hope sandoval's mansion to admire all those countless platinum plaques on her wall she received for being a hot chick in a band. cya lol
oh for fucks sake...for the millionth fucking time on this site
POP MUSIC does not start and end with leona fucking lewis and katy fucking perry. good pop music is the beatles, the beach boys, prince, bowie, talking heads, bjork, motown, outkast, beck, outkast, m.i.a, animal collective. creative, intelligent, insightful, invigorating, inspiring. none of these words apply to lily allen.
the attitude towards pop stars in recent years from "credible" music writers borders on paternalism at times. pop stars are treated like infants, lavished with praise when they manage to accomplish simple tasks like incorporate a proper noun or brand name into a track (cappuccino, Tesco, H&M), or put a coherent song together about something other than "i love you, you love me". cmon, lily allen is TWENTY THREE YEARS OLD! for fuck's sake, she writes like she's half that! she is not intelligent or insightful in any way shape or form apart from when compared to the absolute lowest common denominator, which DiS should be well above using as a yardstick. pretending she is indeed some sort of verbally gifted sharp-tongued cultural commentator rather than just your average loudmouthed brat might fly with tabloid readers, but from what i can tell the DiS readership is fairly smart and relatively learned.
i like that they're so much division
as regarding mogwai's best work. i think this must mean they're really good.
come on die young though, really? were there ever a more clear case of a band, when presented with the dilemma of a "difficult second album", put their fingers so firmly on the COMPLETELY PUSSY OUT button?
i would never ever trust anyone
who could be described by themselves, others or myself as a "post-rock aficionado"
rock action
is easily their best and most accomplished record to me. young team second. all the rest have at least three songs which sound underdeveloped/throwaway
they should take a break long enough
that they emerge as the slick sebadoh they once were and not the horseshit radiorock outfit they currently are
bjork, wtf?
releasing another video this long after the album's release, and when nobody really gave that much of a shit about the album in the first place, and with the video being for an album track people mostly made fun of anyway (mostly for sounding like stairway to heaven), and with the consequent video being shite anyway, is kind of depressing
las vegas dealer
is my favorite track of theirs
i love the first two records but they have never really lived up their potential and are (even now) a bit too far up their own arses. i think, in a nutshell, gomez would be awesome were they not a bit shit
not loving their records much
but that reading footage is sick.
and yeah, i was listening to can when i was 16. they're hardly obscure
im amazed that
this band even got past their first gig without someone saying "y'know...about that name..."
hmm
"Apparently performers must also resist “jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage"
someone send mogwai over there, they'd be revered as gods
fucking brilliant
that is all
okay
so what actually is the right way of dealing with this sort of thing according to DiS?
because i distinctly remember the threads about win butler and bloc party threatening to walk off stage if anyone through anything more at them were riddled with "what a pussy", "just abuse them" etc.
i think
people consider the daily mail to have some sort of influence on mainstream society. i dont think they think the same of the daily express.
i loathe that paper with every fiber of my being ((on reaction to the frontpage on the sight of more than one headline, i have felt compelled to rip every copy out of the rack, take them out the shop and throw them in the bin)...but most people know the daily express is ridiculous. it's not really a threat.
its simon le bon
hes an idiot. he doesnt need crack.
also i dont even know where to begin objecting to "He also looks great in a well cut suit, and has the blood and voice of an Englishman."
i really do despise duran duran and their cunt singer more than any other non-evil person in the world. so fucking terrible
maybe, just maybe
its not cool to like coldplay for a reason?
have to agree with certain posters above
if modern oasis ever called eno....
yaaaaaawn
and well whaddya know. no "spanish influence" to be seen. what a goddamn surprise.
yeah, okay, prince does a radiohead
but its a bit of a dirge despite typically flawless, could-be-noone-else-on-the-planet vocals. and the guitar at the end is really wank at times. and im such a big prince fan my goddamn username is a prince reference.
p.s. he's anything but a loser. but hes most definitely a creep
yeah, but still
multiply
no
lose money
yeah, a "spanish influence"
like the last album was supposed to be influenced by kraftwerk and johnny cash. i fucking hate it when bands cite influences they dont sound anything like to try and appear diverse and sophisticated, its desperately pathetic. the most recent example being foals claiming to be influenced by gwen stefani. i dont give a shit if you LIKE her, you don't even remotely SOUND LIKE her. john lydon dug van der graaf generator but it would be pretty stupid to cite them as an influence on the sex pistols
and comparing him with jamie lidell
is virtually reprehensible
midpoint between calvin harris and jamiroquai
i mean, ugh. music that seems like it's made for playing in the background of a toni & guy's salon. suffocatingly antiseptic
""I have liked big tits ever since I was a kid. I was breastfed for too long I think"
without a doubt the worst thing anyone has ever said
^this
absolutely 100% seriously, i dont believe it takes this guy more than 20 minutes to put together one of his tracks
they should be the typical dis band
in that they have a vaguely "experimental" sound which incorporates both math rock and post punk, and in that they dont really have any songs to speak of. see also: minus the bear
but seriously, i like the noises they make, so someone write them some songs to put them in. they make bloc party look like a goddamn hit machine
its horrible
everyone made fun of it because axl was trying to sound like nine inch nails about 8 years after it was cool to sound like nine inch nails (i.e. around the time work on chinese democracy began)
headline + pic combo =
megalolz
headline + pic combo =
megalolz
"ghouls" is really incredible
after hours i already liked. not really managed to get into any of the rest though. doesnt strike me as bad or lacking in inspiration, its just that nothing seems to be that immediately appealing which is disappointing considering the hit-after-hit feel of the debut
from wikipedia
* "Suburban Knights" (2007) - #5 Peru, #7 UK, #15 Ireland, #79 Germany
* "Can't Get Along (Without You)" (2007) - #1 Peru, #45 UK
* "I Shall Overcome" (2008) - #4 Peru
does this mean they're for some reason really big in peru?
o2 arena?
is he going to have a big gangway that he walks down spotlighted into the audience whilst belting out "democracy"?
im not a df fan in the absolute slightest
but a lot of the blame for the disgusting camp sites and searches has to be put on the behaviour of a large proportion of the people who go to the festival, right?
even middle class students are mostly pretty disgusting, let alone neds (yay for stereotyping!)...no matter how much df spent on toilet facilities they would still be boufin' by saturday morning, i guarantee it. and if i went id be quite happy with constant searches if it ruled out the possibility of me getting hit over the head with a buckie bottle that some scumbag throws over the crowd
.
winehouse, nash or allen only have "guys having a thing for them" because they're pop singers. all three are borderline ugly but presentable enough when they scrub up enough (possibly no longer applies to winehouse but she looked alright for her first album)
uh
most people who go to t in the park go to have a pissup in a field and couldnt give a toss about the lineup. ive actually heard someone seriously say "going to t in the park this year, so id better start getting to know some of the bands!". and there are a whole glut of people who just sit themselves 75% of the way from the stage to the central bit, plomp themselves down and never move anywhere (and presumably barely listen to the music)
rem, kate nash and the verve (who recently inexplicably sold out two SECC dates then two glasgow academy dates) will be more than enough of a draw for most of the people who go there
i should like them but dont
they have great production, are good arrangers and have a lot of ambition. but to be quite frank, they just dont have any tunes. some of the ballads on the first album were just staggeringly dull, and the songs i've heard from this album (which ideally should be the most instantly enjoyable) are the same; remove the bombast from get over it and it would be a belle & sebastian c-side. kriss kross really has no worthy hook at all apart from the intro/post-chorus bit.
i also really dislike fyfe dangerfield's voice, though that's just purely personal taste really
thats pretty fucking great
also if you think that's either remotely "jazz" or remotely "lounge" you need to listen to more music
xiu xiu's cover of "don't cha"
is pretty much the worst piece of music ever recorded. it's awesome
also
it kind of sounds like the scissor sisters covering the klaxons
nooooooo

you could say the same about any creative pursuit ever
and doing so would be as meaningless, daft and ultimately pointless. hooray yourself
i love sufjan but he can be irritatingly morose. there's something about "PEOPLE JUST DONT UNDERSTAND" complaints coming from someone who hasnt really bothered or managed to record any new music for more than 4 years that doesnt sit right.
the success of illnois if anything proved the album is still very much a viable medium. or to be more cynical, proved that you can almost entirely get away with most songs on your album sounding very similar if you just whack a "concept album" tag on the front. the reason why most albums are just collections of songs is because most bands either cant be bothered or dont have the talent to create a cohesive work of that length. it has nothing to do with mp3s. the kind of people who would buy a sufjan record still download music in album format in the vast majority of cases
