Haven't they always had good visuals and stuff?
For live shows and the like? Just what i've heard. Really want to go to the warp thing.
Fun's a good word to bring up
Saw them for the first time a couple of months ago and the music just seemed to be like an incredible party soundtrack, it just left me with a massive smile on my face. Great stuff, i think that the final score's academic.
Katie stelmanis is flippin'
well good.
It's a corker isn't it
And actually works in an exercisey kind of way.
I disagree
I think it was a good article that articulated an interesting position in an insightful manner
Yours
Big Phil McCracken
I saw lovvers recently
and thought that were bloody brilliant.
The headline is really misleading
I thought that was easily one of the best interviews i've read on here.
That was meant to be a reply
to theguywithnousername.
That's interesting
because i always thought Paul Morley was a knob.
Yeah, you're right actually
I could've saved a bit of time by just writing that.
By the way, that spatchcock thing looks brilliant.
every time i see an article about white lies
i feel compelled to comment on the fact that i saw them at field day and they were 'what the hell? seriously, this is rubbish, there's no way i'm watching any more of this' bad.
Perhaps they've written a load of brilliant new songs since them, but i doubt it, and it's very sad that they're being hyped up as "one of 2009's hottest tips".
I don't like to be negative and all! Good luck guys, you're living the dream, but i wouldn't feel right not saying anything.
Thanks, bye.
Good stuff
Very well said.
Although the middle-class element seems a bit redundant, the comment about over-privileged kids thinking that the capacity to download entitles them to free music is a great one.
:D
You really should have your own column!
I think that
if ryan adams makes a public statement in response to something that's been publicly written, then it's perfectly reasonable to do the same.
Saw them at Field Day
They were awful.
I wouldn't trust it
It's been up for a few days now and i really don't know why it's been bumped up the news if it's inaccurate.
Ooh!
What's he like live?
Looking forward to him and juana.
Mars Volta ATP
was probably the best weekend of my life.
I had some sort of nervous breakdown on the Monday, felt distinctly unhinged.
Rather wish i'd gone to ATP/Pitchfork now, i had some real issues with EITS.
This is good
Even without sound.
I don't see this as being much less coherent
or meaningful than the Mercury. It's all a bit silly isn't it!
Please feel free to investigate my Alternative to the Alternative Awards Award. Eluvium's going to win, i reckon he's pretty good.
Should we be challenged
just for the sake of it? (that isn't a rhetorical question)
Also, i would consider Electrelane to be just as safe as most of the stuff on that list.
That link is the only
interesting and positive thing i have read about the Mercury Prize, thank you.
I just wish that the facts that she comes out with there were made more publicly by the actual organisers.
I know that it's fun to talk
about music you love and would like to see succeed. But wouldn't a more interesting question be 'what is the point of the Mercury Music Prize?'?
Sorry to sound negative, but i've become a bit more disillusioned about this whole thing as time has gone on (and Jo Whiley and Jools Holland have become more and more embarrassing).
Should music be about a competition? Is it right that a record label has to pay money for an album to be nominated? Why the British and Irish angle? The tokenism? What is the thinking behind a panel deciding what the 'best' album of the year is? What is the thinking about Edith Bowman being on this panel?!
On a more positive note, i love Max Tundra, is it worth buying both of his albums?
The leenk
it does nartheeng.
Except for show some other dates. Am i being mega stupid?
That flaccid rejection line's a great one
Good round-up.
(am i stupid for not getting the r-kelly reference?)
I didn't know that John Robb fronted Goldblade
I'll never be able to listen to Strictly Hardcore in the same way again.
SUGAR SUGAR KANDY POP!
PUSH IT DOWN AND PULL IT UP!
This is Fake DIY's a great tune as well.
Didn't Vetiver play Field Day last year?
Sorry, is that mega-pedantic?
If it's a race
this was mentioned at doubledotdash.org on the 9th of june. Beat that!
Come on gang
why all the h8?
Hmm
I'm sort of the other way round - i wouldn't have a problem making a tune for a specific product (providing the product's ok) but i wouldn't like the idea of a song being appropriated and then used out of context (Shed Seven and Devendra Banhart leap to mind).
Also, though
I was trying to agree with the 'i enjoyed this review generally' sentiment.
I was talking to someone about DiS the other day and he commented that there seems to be a lot of people reviewing reviews.
So Parachutes would get less than 6?
I've not listened to the album in depth, but that seems a little stingy?
and I'm going straight to hell
I tried to make a similar post in another thread and got the words wrong.
^ Yeah
me too.
I've tried to do this before
I was struggling to get beyond:
D. Boon; vocals and guitar
Mike Watt; Bass
George Hurley; Drums
Yeah, i didn't really understand
the vocals criticism. Good to point out the drummer's role though, think that he's well good.
I can see why some people don't go for it, but that's just music. Haven't got the album yet, but am definitely going to.
One of the reasons that i loved
seeing them so much was that they made me feel like an adolescent, and not meh at all.
Having seen a variety
of superior responses (boxing v. boxing, an actual longish poem, an answer that has ALREADY cleverly acknowledged the superior responses) i'd box up my anxieties and move on to living a happy and successful life.
(not to get rid of them of course, just to keep them in check. I could maybe leak them out a bit every now and then to relieve the pressure)
Good competition - prize AND question.
Interesting review
Thanks.
Only a little though
Mostly i just have the utmost respect for his written output.
I'm
a little bit gay for him...
