Italians Do It Better

James and the Giant Speech

I'm here all night...

The Antlers - Burst Apart

m83 album is too predictable, and laughably stadium-esque. doesn't do it for me at all.

can't for the life of me see how it's getting into so many end of year lists. @FrancescoNoir Why care about consensus? I don't believe there's any sort of contrarian philosophy here, but the fact that DiSsers are able to dicuss /dispute reviews on the forum offers plenty of alternate perspectives, which i'm sure are in part taken into account when devising these end of year lists.

Sweden

It had better be

either 'The Morning' or 'House of Balloons' by The Weeknd or i'll be very disappointed...

yeah it's majestic isn't it

definitely up there for me, but likewise i never know whether it counts. Downloaded it last year, but only really got into it over the last 4 or 5 months. can't emphasise enough just how great i think the weeknd is though! 'the morning' is far and away my track of the year so far even if it might not be "the best".

There's no standout or 'game-changer' albums like MBDTF

but there's still really exciting stuff spawning from the underground hip-hop/rnb realm- the weeknd, HTDW, Drake, Shabazz Palaces, Clams Casino, Shlohmo etc. I think it's been a decent year for music, it's just not immensely definable YET; last year was sort of characterised by post-dubstep and the return of hugely successful alternative artists like LCD and Sufjan, Gorillaz, Joanna Newsom, FlyLo, Caribou etc. which this year hasn't had to anything like the same extent. Give it time.

also worth a listen:

Shabazz Palaces- Black Up
LV & Joshua Idehen- Routes
Bon Iver- Bon Iver
Unknown Mortal Orchestra- Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Young Galaxy- Shapeshifting
FaltyDL- You Stand Uncertain
DJ Quik- Book of David
Nicolas Jaar- Space is Only Noise
Braids- Native Speaker
Snowman- Absence
The Weeknd- House of Balloons

Wild Beasts

Gorillaz- Plastic Beach

Is the album i've listened to most. The honourable mentions go to Caribou, Baths, FlyLo, Four Tet and These new puritans. Next year's got a lot to live up to!

Great review

my favourite lyricist full stop, and for me their best album. To still listen to it with the same enjoyment and awe as i did in its first week of release is something I can only say that about a few other records released in my lifetime. Unlike most artists, Why? seem neither part of a musical fad or fashion, hence the longevity for me.

Dm Stith...

is criminally underrated. Glad to see a 9/10 and totally agree with it!

it was indeed

truly breathtaking at times, can quite easily say the two best gigs of the last twelve months for me have both been at the barbican- Grizzly Bear and DPs

listen to the radio show

it won't be too long this time as it sounds like they're very happy with it...

I disagree

I'd prefer to watch something genuinely unpredictable and exciting over some dick repeatedly jerking his guitar off. Plus you're talking about 8 months ago and they'd have been pretty much going for only a couple of months. As for the xx, yeah they're not in any way virtuosic but neither do they purport to be- i saw this band upsilon acrux last november, and they were incredible musicians, but i wanted to rip my eardrums out because they were just fucking so awful and boring, sweep scale after sweep scale... you know the point i'm trying to make ;)

since when have Islet been distinctly average?

Have you seen that band live??

the flaming lips

was gutted to have missed them at the roundhouse

will definitely be going to this, and £45 considering the choir, orchestra and all the guests they'll be bringing with them really isn't that bad

Just bought

the four tet and wild beast shirts- wish uniqlo was a little more nationwide- generally prefer the clothes to American Apparel and it's far less pricey which is a massive bonus!

hmmm....

Arthur Russell anybody? good though!
