Re: Reading/Leeds: Review

Not meaning to be a pedantic fool, but wasn't the Nottinghill carnival started by the Jamaican people who came to live here in the *gets decade wrong probably* fifties? So isn't kinda a Jamaican type festival thing anyways...will shut up now as this isn't important.

Re: - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith

i run a cinema and the worst kind of nerds come out to play for these types of films..like the woman who came to buy a ticket from me for LOTR, and announced that she'd seen it ten times...and i was supposed to be impressed..just frightening...

Ryan Adams: Glasto, UK gigs and new LP

Shepherd's Bush....grrrrr...sold out..grrr...grrr....mumble mumble....bastards...grrr

Re: Patti Smith Meltdown: Cat Power, Orton, O'Connor, Shields, Bragg, Yoko, Flea, Cale...

I think Patti is a bit of a Blake fan. Innit. I think she did some kind of evening completely based on him before, i think it was in cornwall or something...there may have been naked people...on reflection i think i just dreamt it.

Re: DiS Download Store Launched Today! Martha album pr

the site is staying true to its ideals through the record label and through other ventures. the site has spawned a record label that has signed really strong bands and musicians. independent bands who are signed to an independent label. those signings were reviewed on dis before they were signed because they are good bands and other writers independently thought so before there even was a record label, so there is little conflict of interest in that sense. and whatever way we look at it, all music sites, movie sites whatever are a form of advertising. what is the harm in advertising that there are gigs on and records for sale, through news items and scene pieces (not reviews)? That’s the point surely.

and surely its better to buy from a place that has spent four years building a good reputation for being what it is. a great site for finding out about great music. the only agenda being educating people and sometimes offering them an alternative.

also how do you keep the label and the site separate? if they had different names surely it would seem a little more sinister and open to manipulation, with people finding out later on that the two are related and feeling duped.

ALL review sites and publications are guilty of self-promotion, in the sense of friends reviewing friend’s bands (the music industry seems to be very incestuous). if all publications were forced to stop doing this then they would all probably lose half their content. so if you are going to complain of editorial being compromised, and action was taken to stop all back scratching (i.e. writers promoting own bands, club nites, other writers promoting fellow writers bands and club nites, and all writers promoting friends bands) then we would all be listening to *thinks really hard* fucking Keane and we would know of few alternatives. (and i am mean this in terms of across the board of mags etc not just dis)

Re: DiS Download Store Launched Today! Martha album pre-release exclusive!

what does this point prove? that nme is anti capitalist (or whatever someones comment was) and thats a good thing, or that nme aren't great cos they don't have a record label?

i don't understand.

what does it matter. everyone (and I do include many dis writers in this) shoots themselves in the foot with this whole arguement as to whether dis should get bigger/get a lable, etc. why are we all so affraid of success or the promotion of good music? do we all aspire to just be average or a bit crap? is that whats hip these days? its not like anyone is going to be making a profit for a long while.

Re: You talking to my bird? New Rhodes dumped from tour

I did go to a Bright Eyes gig. Stood in the middle and couldn't hear the little blighter cos PEOPLE WERE FUCKING TALKING. The combination of his pa thingy being low and people gassing at the two bars at either end of the room meant he was inaudible. It is annoying when you've traveled somewhere near two hours to get to a gig and then can't hear anything cos people think they are in a pub and have no idea that maybe people have paid to hear someone other than them.

Rilo Kiley - The Execution Of All Things

you see, i reviewed it all that time ago, and i can't listen to it now cos i find it really annoying and simpering. but i really like it at first. strange.

"There's lots of it about... as they say; why are people going to hang their hat on you, as opposed to x female artist?"

That be a fairly patronising question mr g-man. You say it like female artists are a seperate genre, when there should be no gender distinction just sound and ability.

woooah, germaine grear moment over, I'll return to doing the dishes while mutli tasking and giving a blow job.

Re: Pete Doherty: The Shambolic Waster

*long live pete doherty i say*

I think the point is that he won't be living for much longer if he carries on like this...

I don't know much about the Libertines, but they have always reminded me a of later day Chaz and Dave...is that cool? hmm..

..other muscians such as Hendrix, Stones, Lou Reed may have all had drug 'issues' but surely they were content over style, and people heard of them because of their ability first not their addictions...

..and also, is any of it really real?

- Van Helsing

Fair enough point rob, but it is really hard to get onto pr lists for film screenings, which means we are always going to be late in reviewing a film. I also agree on the type of films that generally get reviewed, but even though I run a cinema I personally still find it hard to see the critically acclaimed films, as they are often distributed on a really small scale which means again the reviews will be anything from a week to 2 months late. Also this being a music site, reviewer’s main activities are music based, meaning that they aren't going to be so concerned with seeing a film and documenting what they thought of it. To be honest I don't see what is wrong with saying a film is shit, as blatantly this film is a farcical attempt at a well loved genre, with special affects that are so advanced yet amateurishly executed, and little to no characterisation or real plot. People aren't coming to see it, and it is really god damn hard to sell to people. Thus it is a shit film.
