Cover Art
The cover art is fantastic - I was so pleased when I saw that this compilation was now available. It's fabulous - so far removed from some of the po-faced bullshit that's about at the moment.
A 6 is too low...
It's a lot better than this review suggests. There's a lot going on here and the lyrics are really interesting - after a few listens the melodies can be captivating. To compare a group from Norwich with Os Mutantes is a little unfair - this is a very English kind of samba!
Another one under the radar...
This is a really good review of an excellent album. It seems to be destined to go the same way as the brilliant 'Tones Of Town' unfortunately, i.e. ignored by most of the music press and should appear about number 40 in the 50 albums of 2008.
Bristol
They played at the Bristol Academy on the 17th and this review easily sits with my experience. I did want a little more charisma though, or even some theatre - it just seemed like there were a couple of roadies on the decks...quite a sound though...that bass!
The Cure
Seemed dangerous and exciting, whilst poppy enough to fulfill my love of melody. Also hearing Lloyd Cole and The Commotions 'Rattlesnakes' for the first time and realising that STRING ARRANGEMENTS could be really cool.
The Field?
Big miss that one. There was also Lucky Soul, The Shot Heard Around the World, Bill Callahan and Loney, Dear to consider. I'm quite amazed how Tunng seemed to have become such pariahs as well - is it because the Guardian suddenly like them?

The review is
..balanced and accurate. An eight seems about fair. Looking forward to hearing this on a sunny Saturday morning (if it's ever going to be sunny again).
