it's so narrow -minded :(

nail on head ladd-o. DiS at one point a year or so ago seemed to be getting broader in scope, but this list just serves to reinforce the fact that you are just not giving the lesser known enough exposure relative to those we all already know far too much about. Big name central is a cop out.

And yes, here's my 'where is..' two-penneth:

Vessels (my #1) No-one has mentioned them? Outstanding record and best gig this year too... Equally Portico Quartet's Knee Deep In the North Sea is a brilliant album that I just keep coming back too. More worthy mentions for Kaki King's Dreaming of Revenge, Monoceros' I Feel Apocalyptic Today, Kelli Ali's Rocking Horse and Johann Johansson's Fordlandia and Praveen and Benoit's Song Spun Simla.

Why

does everyone diss Morcheeba so much? Who Do You Trust is a really good, much underrated record and Big Calm is just pop perfection. Fair enough they went downhill after that but those were good albums. And Moloko did some geniunely interesting stuff pre-disco-chart-remix-breakthrough. Lazy writing.

RUMAH SAKIT

everyone else blows their loins.

trufax

Havn't you heard?

DiS doesn't cover Oceansize any more.

I'm still trying to work out why.

Canon Blue = WOW!!

If any more of this guy's output matches the Halcyon Ep he's hopefully going to recieve a higher level of acclaim, and well deserved it would be too.

Downloaded this yesterday and it has already taken over my head, its like the best parts of what Efterklang are doing crossed with the more direct, driving sensibility of Junior Boys.

This is really clever as well as being musical ecstasy. Believe.

Really refreshing...

...to see something of this ilk being given the space for a well written review. His stuff as Helios is heartbreakingly gorgeous yet relatively unheard of.

If this is your cup of tea try other Type stuff like Sylvain Chaveau's Nuage, the aforementioned Helios and look out for the Peter Broderick album next year as anyone who saw him support Efterklang will know it's going to be special.

^^ THIS ^^

is true

Thats a bit harsh

really isn't it.

Who else is breaking this sort of stuff sincerely?

Album of the year

for me.

Mary Anne hit the nail on the head in that quote above, his stuff touches you on a way deeper emotional level. Once it's in you it just never leaves.

Stunning stuff and even better than the first one.

This is going to be

brilliant, as with everything the 'size boys do.

Can't wait for london, but why no brighton show guys?!

Coolio,

but the impression I get, and I find this to be a issue with DiS in general, is a slight lack of 'finger-on-the-pulseness' within this scene.

This year there's been amazing electronica albums from the likes of Helios, Apparat, Murcof, Deepchord, Modeselektor, Alva Noto to name just a handful. But there's no real coverage here for this kind of stuff, and i really think there should be.

Well

it doesn't really anger me, i'm just not totally sure about it. His DJ sets are awesome yet usually contain a lot of his own stuff. Most of the people I know who've heard of him have done so through his own work, specifically tracks like 'On Your Own' and good old word of mouth.

Anyhow the number of tired cliches used in the review created the impression for me that you don't have much experience with the electronic side of things. I might be wrong...?

Empty Words

"What started out as supposedly being a highly ingenious way of relaxing to music has since become synonymous with overwrought, tepid, standard fare for dinner parties and such like"

To drag up *another* stereotypical journo comment, I think what you are actually refferring to is covered by the lovely term 'chillout'.

'Ambient' electronic music is a term that could encompass multiple sub-genres which are currently very popular, full of interesting & original artists and have a lot more to them than just 'dinner party music'.

I thought DiS was above using such hackneyed and sloppy terms. The first paragraph effectively derides the album before mentioning anything about it and creates a negative view for the rest of it which i feel is unjust.

Whilst I happen to agree that this is not one of Ulrich's best works, to suggest he is best known for ambient remix work isn't exactly true. His last album, Strangely Isolated Place was a very well recieved, superbly executed piece of electronic goodness.

On the whole, the content of this review gives the impression it was written by someone with little real knowledge or love of electronica, which seems to bias the whole thing from the start.

Agreed

It is a cheap and sneaky way to get some artwork done, but on the flipside it may have recognition/portfolio benefits, albeit rather small ones, for the winner, and then only if they're fucking good.

This man

speaks the truth

Nice one Mike

I knew we could rely on your good taste to appreciate what this band has to offer.

Mr Dowling's rambling rant of a review of the Big Zeus EP has been justly avenged.

Hahaha

excellent!

Yeah

Thats kinda true Mike, and I take that point. I just couldn't let you intimate that the only reason the verve got anywhere is because of that idiot liam!

I would imagine they found a much larger fanbase by association, but also that plenty of music lovers got into them on the strength of said music alone.
Especially early on as I mentioned.

Obviosuly I fucking love Storm in Heaven, Already There is simply PERFECT. mmmm

You can't be serious

"Liam Gallagher alone has been semi-responsible for the relative success of..." the others i agree with but The Verve?

They were around way before and were always a very different band, especially earlier on. You wouldn't have seen Noel et al creating a album anywhere near as good as A Storm In Heaven which is a underrated british psychadelic masterpeice imho.

Remember, it was Oasis who supported The Verve early on.

Nice review :)

But if you knew Cinematic you'd surely know that the head honcho is J. Swinscoe?

Who da fack is Jeffrey Howell?!

Btw, for anyone intertested, Patrick Watson's band/solo project are ace. Like Grandaddy mixed with Wilco and splashed with a little MBV.

Took you DiS dudes

long enough to pick up on them!

There's rather too much overly dramatic prose in the review for my liking, did someone got a teensy bit carried away?! Glad they are having such an dramatic effect on you though, check them live (if you havn't already) tis MAGICAL.

Tripper = as good as Vespertine.

Discuss

Piccy..

Could't you find a more recent one, that un looks circa early 90's Cornflake Girl!

Actually

I take that back about those tracks not being the very best songs on it. The whole album is is simply great and I can't stop listening to it.

Lets get cynical, cynical......

Oh dear.

"wet, directionless music"

Oh dear oh dear.

"forced experimentation"

WTF??

Have you even listened to the album?

This is music that is layered, thoughtfully composed, so as to reveal itself over repeated listens. You don't give the impression you gave them much of a chance; a quick listen then lets knock out a negative review lacking in substance.

Granted these may not be some of the very best songs from it, but as a whole it's one of the most sonically interesting and catchy records to come along in a quite while, and sure makes a nice change from all else that's 'hot' right now.

How you can mention Athlete in the same sentence is a tad fucked and smacks of slightly lazy journalism. Annuals write intelligent, interesting music that to my ears greatly pisses all over anything Athlete and their ilk could ever hope to create, and they do all this while actually sounding FUN (where's the fun gone in music anyway?)

They put a big smile and my face and in my 'umble opinion this review contains more shit than a fucking pig sty.

Under Byen!

Nice one Mr Diver, a well deserved mention of a much unknown band.

The album that song is from is ace.

But they are not quite as good as compatriots Efterklang, who fit right into a wintery mood soundtrack....

I call for more
relatively-unknown-yet-amazing music being given props on DiS

Erm...

"Like The Eraser? Vote for James Holden."

The Eraser is a really solid record. James Holden's however is an overhyped piece of 'techno' nonsense.

Does not compute!

IMHO Yellow House is by far the best album this year. And you didnt even mention Fionn Regan who pisses over most else on that list.

I was there too

Sat right in front of him on the floor in the centre.

When he yelled "Jesus has left my body, Jesus has left my soul!" whilst bathed in a green glow standing on a flight case at an altar underneath a giant wooden hanging of christ it was one of those 'special' moments. Unreal.

The blow

has been softened by purchasing tickets for explosions in the sky, march 1st at koko.....mmmmmmmmm

ace

"fit only for consumption at David Gray's funeral."

like it

dats fighting talk dat is

"world-class dullards Mogwai"

ooohhhhh, why i oughta....

anywways,

Isn't the use of capitals on the net a way of stating your opinion wholeheartedly, ie- shouting?

meh. its friday afternoon, I want to go home and im being pedantic...

Thats cool Mr. D

But for anyone reading those comments there wasn't really any other way to take them thus you can understand my confusion when you posted this review.

:)

Erm, no....

"The message i got from this review was "they used to be rubbish, but this is actually quite good""

Thats quite alkrage u-turn of opinion in the space of only three days?!?!?

It's a point well worth raising

And I quote...

(in reference to the noisettes)

"they're PANTS"

Mike_Diver | 21 Nov '06, 13:47

ahem.

im genuinely surprised!

i'd have thought you guys would have liked em. What's not to like? ballsy sound, great original singer, top musicianship. you seen them live?

methinks you act with too much haste!

The noisettes....

Any comments on the support or aren't they important enough?

I saw them

in Brighton last week and was pretty impressed.

Admittedly they suffer a little from sixth-form tweeness but managed to pull off some quality songs packed full of dynamics and ideas.... and when they go heavy they don't hold back. Respect.

They knocked Amusement parks for six, who's singer was desparately trying to be Conrad Keely while the rest of the band played the same average song for half an hour. Overrated shite.

Dudes..

Flawless is that t-shirt shop in kensington gardens, they put nights on too so that'll be where he's at. No idea where they put the nights on, but in the poast mr lavelle has been to the zap a couple of times so smart money would be on that.

If its Joni Mitchell...

...its gotta be The Circle Game, one of the best somngs ever written.

TRUFAX

What's...

the title/author of that book please?

sounds interesting, ta

How

right you are!

Saw

them at summer sundae too. Best bits were all off first two albums, one track from new LP promising but most distinctly average. Redeeming feature was a nice cover of Nick Drake's Black Eyed Dog. Seems to me they've lost all sense of the creative and experimental attitude that gained them fans in the first place.

Oh man...

I'd have loved to have been at this. Saw fifteen minutes of their set at V99, then got dragged off to fucking Suede!?!?! They have been an immense presence in the music world for so long now people forget the impact and influence they continue to have. Really good review btw...

This is

completely and utterly mind-boggling.

You deserve to be fucking banned from here for that.

"Idiot"

I seem to

remember they had a track, 'Birthday' featured on a Jockey Slut (MUCH missed) CD about three years ago. So I think they were known to a good few of the populous.

That voice...

*really* grates on me. I can't look at him without getting the instinctive vibe that he's a slimy, self-aggrandizing cnut.

She is

like, sooooooo hot right now

They are

music for the masses

amusing.

but the new pornographers lp is a utter classic & it will win.
