Get a job!

this is sick-it's enough that Kristen Hersh will say your name on a special CD for a cash incentive but a song dedication for 200 bucks would suggest this band are free from scruples and any measure of worth. If you can buy your heroes kids-you ought to find some more. you can form your own band for £2,500 and make better music!

wowowowowowow

Mike watt is on bass!!!!!
Lets hope Shone Knife jump on teh Bill and Julei Doiron!!!!!!

amazing!

goto www.damnably.com for lots of John Peel shows in podcasts, our own show and a link to lorrie's canadian radio show that is much better than anything on teh air in the UK

I like it and think she has the most beautiful voice and loose way

of playing when she goes scary loud and delayOfied. The drumming from her husband is ace too. All her albums are great and I hope she comes to play the UK soon!!!!!!!

Great Article

Idaho, Come, Cell and early Karate also were connected to this scene, with Come being possibly the most intesting band after Codeine. The band featurd Thalia Zedek from UZI and Live Skull and Chris Brokaw from Codeine playing incredibly slow and heavy complex riffs with burnt vocals and a kind of cinematic blues noir line in lyrics.
Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw reformed Come last year for a special show at the Tanned Tin Festival in Spain (http://www.tannedtin.com/) as Thalia's band had all the old members of Come in it and Chris was at the festival with The New Year.
11 11 is the Come debut album and well worth tracking down.

David Grubbs plays Cafe OTO in London on May 22nd

Canada is full of ace bands

'Julie Dorion' has a new record out now and is one one with Mount Eerie too and Calm down it's Monday.
'the Superfantstics' are super ace and
'Construction and Destruction' are the king and queen of lofi genius
and in the States, Bottomless Pit have a new record out soon, as do the beautifully poppy death obsessed Wussy and the wonderful 'SWELL'. 'Stinking Lizaveta' have a supurb post modern genre jumping moster guitar record out right now on Monotreme, 'The Wingdale Community Singers' have their 2nd album coming out soon (like magnetic feilds gone alt folk)and from the UK, kings of POSTPUNK/Alt FOLK 'Lazaruis Clamp' are due to release their 5th album later in the year. 'Reigns' have their 3rd in march on Monotreme and are getting massive radio play everywhere right now. 'Smallgang', 'Mordros' and 'Former Utopia' also have release coming out and sound like noone else in the UK. In Japan 'ONEONE' have their debut coming out soon (Satomi, Saya from-Deerhoof/Tenniscoats).

I didn't know grubbs was on Barely Real and SooYoung Park

wrote New years Song.
David Grubbs is playing a special Paino and Guiatar set at Cafe OTO in May and Seam drummer Chris Manfrin is now in the totally amazing but somehow ignored by UK press Bottomless Pit.
http://www.myspace.com/bottomlesspitchicago and mates with Albini, Brokaw, The New Year etc.
Karate began by sounding very like Cideine and Farina is great friends with brokaw too.

go listen to my podast

at www,damnably.com or the much better radio show done by Lorrie
every friday via the Canadian Radio station (streamed too) CKUT http://www.ckut.ca/ her show is called aack!! (after a minutemen song I think) and just wall to wall slowcore every week. www.myspace.com/radiolorrie

Codeine are one of the greatest acts ever

and I like it that they won't reform for mega bucks. I knew this year would be the one slowcore got dug up like math rock was last year. Anything is better than tweecore though!

I think Come should have been in this article too as they played pretty slow but with crazy blues dueling from Chris Brokaw and Thalia Zedek.

Hmmm

I'd say this was an 8 and her debut was fine! I noticed no clumsey piano fingers. I think she is a wonderful songwriter and has a voice second to none at the moment and not so far off Sandy Denny.
man you journalists love to make a story out of a review-it's ok to change mood and style-some people have the ability to digest a broad spectrum of music and emotions. What you probably desire is opne of them identikit one trick bands that write the same song for 5 albums!

lol

that was good Doms. This band is shockingly turd even by todays low standards. To compare them to Joy Division as many press ballons are at the moment is rather idiotic. Ian Curtis read a lot of books and had things to say about the times in which urban decay and the threat of nuclear war was very real and the band created ORIGINAL music. White lies can't write sonmgs let alone deep ones and the music is cut and paste 80's mishmash.

America doesn't have so much of this crap-they must have better press and radio

drones

are a really awful band but it is fun to see Mr True writing for DIS!

I didn't like one of those 50

here is my choice;
Bottomless Pit-Hammer of the gods
Thalia Zedek Band-Liars and Prayers
American Werewolf Academy-Triceratops
Dog Day-Dog Day
Julie Dorion-Woke Myself Up
Frida Hyvonen-Silence is wild
Lucinda Williams-West
The New Year-The New Year
Swell-South of the rain and snow
Bonnie Price Billie-Lie down in the light
Dirtmusic-desert recordings
Robert Forster-The Evangelist
The Silver Jews-Look out mountain Lookout sea
Howe Gelb-Upside down home
Lazarus Clamp-Death to Technicians

hmmm whilst the PR those DIS favs made them appear amazing to those lacking free thinking ears

Thalia Zedek Band-Liars and Prayers
Bottomless Pit-Hammer of the Gods
Frida Hyvonen-Silence is Wild
The New Year-The New Year
American Werewolf Acedemy-Tricertops

Wow they have a lot of London shows!

Agatha are more rockin than these Vivian girlswww.myspace.com/agathatrio

I was at this

Tim does put on the best gigs here and I liked the guitar playing Headlights did-some was really fancy.

their mates with

The Moaners and Robosapians so they must be nice folks-and the mountain goats but I think they have a little way to develop yet with those songs.

I'd say

his output has been consistently dire. He is the dogs' arse of the wet wingecore scene.
Duke of uke is a nice shop though.

Easy nowtoo many this year

stream a few 100 of damanbly radio at www.damnably.com

Oh dear

well I must say, I disagree and that I have really loved;
Robert Forster's 'Evangelist'
Bottomless Pit's 'Hammer of the gods'
Thalia Zedek's 'liars and prayers'
Lazarus Clamp's double album (they play a rare London show on July 6th @catch
and The Silver Jews 'lookout mountain lookout sea'
and the Glortellers debut was really pretty.

You know, I love that Bottomless pit record so much that I reviewed it! I'll post it in the community section should anyone wish to read that puppy.

Music for thinking adults of the year so far

Bottomless Pit-Hammer of the Gods on comedy minus one-This would have been Silkworm's 10th album but sadly their drummer was killed in a freakish motorway suicide.Seam's Chris Manfrin now drums where once Michael Dahlquist did.
The LP deals with this great loss and the delusion, anger and deep sadness that follow the death of a loved one.
Take the best of Joy Division, Shellac, Karate and Pavement and pass through the brains of 2 intellectual
songwriters and you get this masterpeice.

The Glorytellers-The Glorytellers-on Southern-X Karate star pulls
of a mexican folkish masterpiece with incredible guitar work and the softest voice.

Lazarus Clamp-Death To Techicians/...who does it you-Double Album-on Bearos-One of the only good bands in England play loud hard and pretty and use actual songs built around the concept of containing a meaning!

Thalia Zedek-Liars and Prayers on Thrill Jockey. Gravel voiced gloomy genius from Come-the blues slocore precursers to Nirvana's grunge revolution blasts out an instant classic.

Can I review these if noone else has noticed them?

Hmmmm!

Jens Lekman/Silver Jews/Dinosaur were the only good bands i saw

Okervil/Hawk and hacksaw/National/Explosions/Iron and Wine/Trail of dead very poor
Saul Williams was beyond bad and those 2 delay memory man delay pedal artists needing shooting-just write some songs! delay loops are not experimental music! freaks!
Water slides rocked!

No, not at all

Open field, Suffering Juke box, We could be looking for the same thing, what was not but might have been and Strange victory Strange defeat are all really top knotch and five hits for an album is just dandy. Clever writing, pretty guitar and very funny how he lambasts all the skinny nu indie pointy shoed shoddy minded bands that woulda been DJ's had indie not exploded.
So good! and so crazy funny live-like Steve Buscemi doing Ginsberg.

good article Mike

It would be really good if you could get them over with shellac and bottomless pit to play London.

Plus Codeine in 89'

broke that superslowcore scary scene before most of those bands mentioned-chris brokaw of Come being on drums in Codeine then.
goto www.damnably.com and I posted a great radio documentary called 'iconoclasics' from 94' on 'electronic' music and this explains Reich and other composers that broke that new ground. John Cage was more conceptual and his influence was on the situationists, Yves Klien, Joseph Beuys in the art world more than the music world-also serial composition is a form of mathmathic composition designed to take away the human/personality input of the composer and create a pure music-free from emotion, purpose and any learnt concepts. Boulez used this method in the 60's-it is as math as you get. It is really interesting how the term 'experimental' music is almost always used wrongly-that documentary plays experimental music and 2 kids with a drum machine rolling around the floor in 2008 in hackney isn't experiemental-not even when they are in their pantsevenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serialism

Hex Induction Hour

was great near perfect and this deserves 8 just for not sounding pop punk, math rock, tweecore or noizenik-quite a feat in this age and wow! there are even lyrics not out of the 'emotional rhyme for beginners' book that the kids seem to have doing the rounds at the min. man that blood red shoes album was terrible-at least Thalia Zedek, The Silver Jews and Robert Forster have new ones out.

I would not say the Fouls are math rock or

anywhere near it-they do that dancy drum beat sketch which is very different. It is true that many journalists are saying they are math rock but that is different from them being math rock. It is a good selling point but not actually true-they are a guitar pop act. Dianogah are a math rock band and many bands did that here in the early 90's. I don't get why it is popular again and why that trumans water/harry pussy noizecore came back 15 years later too? It is really odd! really really odd! six by seven, Lazarus Clamp, Los Planetos Del Agua, Twinkie, Bob Tilton where are gonna be truning in their math rock graves-now they moved onto different genres

this is a good record

and Cutlor stands out so much more in death what with the present crop of self titled POETS lacking originality, wit or grace.
www.damnably.com has him performing a session on an Andy Kershaw show
ah a jelly mountain.

I like huws drumming

it ain't muffled! you weirdo! clean your ears out. They are playing next week here at a Knom gig.
Gina is sultry though.

2 ok songs

but steve is man run outta things to sing about-he's arsing about. I feel sorry for him. Put him out to pasture.

I did one

at www.damnably.com -I went for 'I don't wanna get over you' and that new drunk one.

nowt like Tortoise to my ears.

Geoff hates it here as they never got paid enough. He siad he'll try and come over in September with hios new band the Glorytellers.
I like that Karate began sounding like Codeine then Geoffs guitar ability took over. He recently did an album with his mate Chris Brokaw too and the Karate Bassist Jeff Godard is in 'i do i do' a Belgium band.

yeah

overrated pig wank

this is wet indie land isn't it

2007 was such a great year for music! but you'd not be able to tell from that lot-here is some good music
www.myspace.com

Woah!

all the shit bands in this Muse fanzine are suddenly bearable now someone with songs and who can play and who isn't pretending to be someone else! is mentioned. wow! DIS should force furture of the left, have cape will mumble, george the face pringle, hot chip, O death to go learn summit

I don't think on this occasion

that Duckworth should be cut slack for his age. He isn't any good and has nothing of substance to say and the music is really poor. He is moving fast but that's why it's ok to slap him down as duffus journo's prematurely ejaculated hype over this poor useless kid.

invaribly the shit ones that

have good PR, look skanky, skinny and have some wanky angle DIS can use as a STORY as the music is usually 'experimental' (this means SHIT), a version of something already done a decade back or some cute girl whose lyrics are sound like they might actually have depth, but actually don't.
BAM!

'controversial'

means 'shit' now does it?

boy he needs some 'imagination help with his song titles.'The Children are(the Consumers of) the Future’is so bad.

bad promotng

That windmill show was empty, Julie was ace but I could not stay to see Joyner as it was after 11 when Julie Doiron finished and the last trains were due.Bad promoting!
Quite why the show started after 9 when Darren Heyman had pulled out is just crazy.
Sparkly Deathcamp was a great guitarist with sadly nowt to say.
Simon looked younger than when I saw him with his mate The Mountain Goats in 94. His cowboy Hat and boots looked ace, but I do have to say his Room Temperature album beats all the later ones.

I got that album back then too and

it did blow my mind. I was in a bar yesterday and heard the Pixies bone machine who I saw in 89 too-thats nearly 20 years ago! fuck

thanks jamie

they sound awesomo

polovo are ace but

who are Lazarus? last year there was a glut of Lazarus bands in London, I counted 4 and those poor boys Lazarus Clamp have been at it since 1993 only to have a load of bumhead indie tubes steal their name.
Long live Lazarus Clamp! their 5th LP is ace by the way

lol! like Mathew and the Ghosts, Furniture of the left and Grinderman

beat Shellac! get a grip you feeble eared freaks.
Lekman is the only decent one here. MIA and the sea and cake are in my worst of the year so far.

MJ Hibbett is

feerlessly political-he does loads of protest songs in a happy optimistic kind of way. I like that.

everyone is uke'ing it up

ukes and burlesque everywhere. Heyman is menat to be a bit sinister in reality-like a boring miserable 40 year old teen gone bad!

Yeah, what is the point here?

left wing politics died a good while back. Time out used to have a 'Politics' section of 3-4 pages full of all manner of Socialist, Anarchist, Communist, Feminist, anti racist groups with meetings and events, but that has gone.
They have 'burlesque' now.

The ideologies of the left have been usurped by glossy IKEA Lifestyle coffee table politics from Naomi Klein and her ilk, who steal ideas from the situationists and sell them as radical new paradigms.

We have wet ineffectual protest songs from Radiohead, and yeah Billy Bragg is ever the revolutionary but only preaching to the converted, and the frightening political stance of Anti Folk scene says 'can't be arsed to tune my guitar because i'm dead punk me...and anarchistic like that..down with the pigs'
The times we live are such that 40% of the Uk believe they are middle class.

There is a substrata of illegal immigrant working class.

We had a Prime Minister that waged an illegal war and who also believed in a mythical being that lived in the clouds and would watch you.

We are allies with the Americans who fly planes around Europe picking up whoever they want and detaining them without trial.

We have a generation of Kids that write in TextSpeak and who are only interested in FaceBook, Iphones, BigBrother and Pete,Amy and Lili's brave struggle with their lack of talent.Young people are stupider than they have ever been before and totally unable to communicate complex ideas. Technology and rather than a ruling elite has lead to an Orwellian 'Newspeak' that lead rendering "all other modes of thought impossible" (George Orwell 1984)

We effectively live in a Police state where, if you are unlucky you can be prone to survelance, arrest, detainment and even murder by the Police forces and all without them needing too much Intel or justification for their actions.
I was just arrested myself by New Scotland Yard-for alledged import of 3 kilos of Cocaine from Caracus, but i'll write that up properly later as it was insane.

These are really crazy times and remember what Neal Young said when He recently wrote 'living with war'-'I looked around for some young bands to write an anti-war protest song, and noone did, so I did it myself'.

Nina Nastarsia, Shellac and me and micky L Clamp write protest songs, oh and Mike Watt and Chris Brokaw do too.

that's ok

Diver, keep at it. You'll find your way. The lord knows noone's perfect!

Perhaps try and remember the golden rule about writing about women fronted bands in the noughties-'they are do not exist in a bubble' and can be compared to bands fronted by men.

Have a sit down. That is a hard one to grasp. It will come Mike, it will come.
