,

Let Me Breathe came out in 2002. They have been together for over 10 years. Of course, I think the review is so far off the mark to be almost laughable (McLusky!?). Really disappointed that DiS have tossed away such an awe-inspiring band. Oh well, have a listen yourself at http://www.last.fm/music/Bilge+Pump/Rupert+The+Sky

BILGE PUMP are also going to Ireland...

Notingham will be worth it for The Horse Loom alone!

Lords, Bilge Pump, Soeza

Lords, Bilge Pump and Soeza will all have albums out on Gringo in the first half o'2008.

Also new releases from The Horse Loom and Zunzunegui, hopefully!

Charlottefield album on Fat Cat should be a good'un.

profit

I'm sure the profit is nowhere near as much as you say. Fees for some of those bands would have been significant and then there are huge expenses such as event licences, policing/stewarding/security, hire of the site/PA/equipment. not to mention VAT!

no...

he is talking about selectadisc in nottingham

yep

49% indeed. I make no judgment on that, but it is interesting that, as you say, the aura of independence is maintained. I certainly wouldn't describe those labels as "steadfastly independent". they've released some good records though!

future

not all of those labels you mention are "steadfastly independent".

erm

... bob tilton?!

review

I actually like the review and I appreciate Josh writing about the bands. I spoke to him on the phone a few days before and Josh expressed concern about writing a review of bands he wasn't very familiar with. I told him I thought it would make for a much more interesting and honest review. I didn't expect him to like everything, and I was pleasantly surprised that he liked as much as he did.

I don't think Sailors are arty farty, but they seem to be a band that a lot of folk have trouble with on the first listen. Owen probably did stick out a bit compared to the other, noisier bands on the bill. It was just as important to me that he was there. And I think Josh has got it spot on that Souvaris lifted the party mood.

Thanks to everyone who came out. It was a great day. Lots of photo up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/gringorecords/sets/72157600341063692/

tit

i repeat, TIT

what

the gossip are hardly a fad band. they have been around since 1999 and pre-date the yeah yeah yeahs. i think you have your critique arse about tit.

£8 / £5

it wouldn't be DY! who would be £3 out of pocket, it would be Comets on Fire :)

hmmm...

from the perspective of someone who runs an independent record label in the UK (Gringo), Plan B have run features on Soeza and The Unit Ama. DIS have reviewed Lords, a lot. So I have actually received wider coverage of my bands in Plan B.

They also did an excellent feature on the UK free-folk scene a couple of issues back.

the very good

cowtown
david thomas broughton
souvaris
mcwatt
quack quack

the rest is new to me, but i'm sure there will be some nice surprises.

what what??

do you mean 'too indie' as in 'too independent'? because that is precisly what it is...

m

i didn't say the vast majority should be british. i do think a decent proportion would be welcome. at least a quarter of the acts....

truck fest sold out! lots of DIY British bands with a much smaller US hip quota.

.

"Plus a US curator is pretty obviously going to choose US bands to play."

only if they are ignorant.

indeed...

My opinion of Volcano! as a band is based on an aesthetic judgment when I listened to their music after being offered to put them on in Nottingham.

Of course it is not Volcano!'s fault that they are in the privileged position of being able to tour the UK, but they are symptomatic of the problem, as I see it. I should probably rephrase and clarify my objection - they are less deserving of touring the UK (based on how good they are as a band) than a large hatful of UK bands are of touring the US.

I'm sure they are lovely people with great politics, most US touring bands are. That is really not the point.

Can you imagine a relatively unknown UK band going to the US and asking for the equivalent of 250 GBP as a guarantee?!!! that is around 450 USD.

It is the ATP syndrome of the US curator picking the same old bands and failing to acknowledge music based in the UK. It IS US arrogance and cultural dominance, except writ small in the world of indie music.

How may UK bands get to play No Fun Fest or Terrastock? (answer = a couple, and they certainly don't get their flights paid for).

blah

them being american or how much they ask for has nothing to do with their quality. their lack of quality is the reason i wouldn't put them on, let alone pay them tha much money. just my opinon though!

yes, piss poor

i think you should look into the economics of US bands touring the UK (how much does a work permit cost?)and ask yourself the question why UK bands of a similar DIY stance can't tour the US.

i have turned down loads of US bands this year because they (or their booking agents) ask for too much money and, in my opinion, the bands aren't good enough or popular enough to warrant it.

because..

...volcano! are yet another piss poor US band that don't deserve to be touring the UK.

Lords

is the Lords album getting reviewed Dom? I've tried emailing you but the messages just bounce back. Matt. Gringo

Wilderness

The other band is WILDERNESS. They are rather fantastic, ina PiL / Lungfish sort of way. And Brown Owl! great leeds6 goodness, get there early etc.

nottingham

nottingham will sell out soon. venue is only 250 capacity. over half the tickets are gone already.

Re: Comets On Fire confirm UK date

They will be playing in nottingham on thursday 20th january. see http://www.damnyou.co.uk for more info.

Re: Damn You! My town's not got gigs as good as these...

Bar None is an extremely nice room, run by a chap who is letting us do whatever we want and not charging for us for it. The Boat Club is a wonderful place which doesn't get used any more because Anton (you used to do gigs there) is now works at The Rescue Rooms. The Maze is 150 capacity, so it is a lot bigger than a tiny girl in a jar. The weirdest place of all is The Old School House by Green's Windmill in Sneinton. The idea is to have gigs happenign in different places and contexts. Variety is the spice of life!

Re: Michael Moore - Fahrenheit 9/11

yep, China and the US as the world's only two superpowers sounds like fun for everyone!

Re: Michael Moore - Fahrenheit 9/11

hmm... i think the point of the lila liscomb lila liscomb is to show how the attitude of a self confessed flag waving patriot can change when her son gets killed in iraq. She then receives letts from her son saying he disagrees with the war. She didn't have to agree to be in the film, and she phoned Moore up to tell him she was going to the White House. Who is exploiting who? She has since being doing plenty of interviews with the press, I believe publicising the anti-war group she is involved in put together by military parents. These voices are not often heard in America. Don't forget, the president banned the filming of coffins! In many ways, it is the most powerful segment of the film, just as seeing the reaction of grieveing parents to the Butler report was powerful on Channel 4 news the other night.
