A vocal whiner,

perhaps.

(his vocal tone does seem to've gotten more whiney as he gets older, don't you think?)

I'm counting the hours until he writes something new

that doesn't suck

;)

Also check out

Cadence weapon - 'Is the black hand'

It has some great remixes

I've had this for ages

good stuff.

been out in Canadia for nuff time

I have no opinion on the twang.

Infact I haven't even heard them, to my knowledge.

I pretty much just tune out as soon as I hear a band name starting with 'The' these days.

'Was heard to remark'

as in somebody overheard a private conversation?

If she'd said that to a journalist / in an interview then fair game. But really to report stuff like this and then accuse her of being a publicity whore would be rather disingenuous...

this thread is funny

Who'd've guessed readers of Brian May's website would be so easy to wind up, and so willing to sign up for duplicate accounts here to post?

The review's amusing. No it's not "nice". If all music journalism tried to be objective and 'focus on the music' it would be boring. Stop taking it so seriously!

Any ruby on rails peeps

drop me a line also - matt@

gabba.cc

Mainly through personal recommendations from friends actually, or mp3 blogs like gabba.cc

I don't think myspace isn't really much use for discovering music, more just for listening to it once you already have a band name to search on.

Occasionally I'll look on Pitchfork, but I have to make an effort to skip all the worthy US indie rock and beard music

You fuckers never asked me :-p

but here goes:

The Exploding Hearts - Guitar romantic
DAT Politics - Wow Twist
Cadence Weapon - Is the black hand
Dalek - Absence
Out hud - never let us speak of it again
Lali puna - Faking the Books
Venetian snares - Rossz Csillag Allat Született
Manitoba (Caribou) - Up in flames

Oh wait that's more than 6.
Totally arbitrary choice. All good though.

Yeah I like the money folder rmx too

Some of the other stuff comes across a little dry, though

I completely agree

What would help is if you could find people to review this stuff for us. I'm happy to coordinate getting more diverse stuff onto the site, but I don't have a lot of time for it as my focus is more on the technology behind the site. D'you know anyone who'd be up for covering this sort of thing for us?

If you can persuade MySQL or InnoDB

to implement fulltext search for the InnoDB storage engine, then I'll give you a forum search.

How's that for a deal.

The label is a separate company

And it's rather important to those of us working on the website that it maintains editorial autonomy from the label.

That said I'm sure it wouldn't be too much work for the label folks to create a profile for you guys.

technical reasons

The other boards stand on their own, whereas the comments board summarizes content drawn from other non-board sections of the site.

I might move it onto the community page in the next site revision, though.

Colloquially chattering?

That's odd, the children round here chatter in medieval latin.

:)

In other news, woo a pain chocolat. I ate one of those for lunch yesterday.

The links thing

is a ruby on rails bug. Will probably be fixed when they bring out a new version.

Editing posts isn't going to happen, as I don't like the possibility of people playing games and rewriting history to make it look like they said something else.

We don't use Times New Roman.

Get a browser with tabs

Once you have tabs, you'll start to find stuff opening in new windows quite annoying, when you would prefer just to ctrl-click (or apple-click) and have it open in a new tab.

That is why I don't set lots of target="_blank" myself.

It's also deprecated by the W3C

This is on the roadmap

Problem being how do we deal with conflicting or innacurate listings from different people, given that we need accurate listings for our own purposes as they tie in with our event reviews, venue profiles etc.

I want to see more hiphop and dance

more news on this may be forthcoming.

I think DiS is still too indie/rock-centered (although in saying this I tend to piss off Colin and Mike rather... it is getting gradually more diverse)

No

Music reviews are always and should be subjective. Trying to make them 'two-sided' would just be boring. Everyone has different opinions; this is the reviewer's. If you want to post your own that's what the comments are for.

11pm

apparently.

These should be fixed now

Let me know if anyone else still having probs.

My mix tape

Would probably have quite a lot of not-indie on it.

Oh fuck it here goes, based almost entirely on recent itunes statistics:

Kerrier district - Disco Nasty (Luke vibert rmx)
DAT Politics - What's DAT?
Kleenex - Hedi's head
Matthew herbert - Moving like a train
Copy - it's a little too late
De-regulator - Manifest destiny
Classified - No mistakes
Jogger - Spider eyes
Girls are short - Spelling
Cadence weapon rmx beastie boys ch-ch check it out

Ain't that hot shit.

as though it's a bad thing!

cheers raz

On friday I will be hopping between the barfly and the lock tavern where some friends are DJing

DJ Mental Matth

Will be making an appearance downstairs!

Expect more hooks than an army of one-armed pirates.

First person to request the Smiths wins a special booby prize

Dunno about you but...

I would.

How very post-modern and ironic

and unfunny/twattish. Bit of an attention-seeking blowhard IMHO

Dan the automater

and Jamie Cullum? no fuckin way

F'realz.

nuff said.

Board design

I'll have a word with our design guy about the text colour... personally I wouldn't mind it a little bit darker too.

As for subject lines, I am experimenting on you folks to see if you actually create useful subject lines for posts in the absense of a default.

Because having 'Re: the parent post' all the time is kinda redundant no? but it needs some kind of subject line to break things up visually, I think.

You already have it turned on

Or else you couldn't have posted that :)
Don't worry about it

Boards & user login

They're all Ajax-ified, didn't you notice? :)

Notice how when you reply to something the reply submits and appears immediately without having to reload the page. Neat huh. Same for logging in at the side - no page reload

And it works!

Yay.

Note to anyone who has javascript turned off - too bad. go turn it on.

Heh

Re: DiS Disappearing For A Few Days

(1) New forums will be the same as the old ones, although the interface will be a bit different and look nicer.

(2) Yeah same usernames

(3) Yeah, there are already! see the footer. although may take a while to convert them to work with the new site too they will reappear

Re: DiS Disappearing For A Few Days

Nah I'll do a final dump and convert before launching the new site. Then I'll disable the boards here. Then a few hours later the new will appear with all the posts and ting. *evil grin*

At the moment it's looking like late this week, maybe thurs or fri.

Re: DiS Disappearing For A Few Days

Yep, don't worry no data will be lost
All posts notes ratings etc are moving across
They are being converted into a better more normalised and future-proof database schema
Boards/sections/blogs, articles/comments/entries, staff/users are being unified
Reviews will link to release and event listings
Stuff like that.

Re: DiS Disappearing For A Few Days

Heh
Sorry, I meant 'cum-screen'

DiS Disappearing For A Few Days

These boards will stay open until the new site's ready, don't worry. They are just behind a temporary splash page for a bit.
