there's two sides to prog. And the histrionic and mostly unprogressive Yes/ELP/Floyd side is waaaaay too overbearing.
BUT.
Genesis, King Crimson, Caravan, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Camel, Black Widow...

Does anyone realise Korn exist anymore?
Re: CHARTATTACKKKKKK: Top 75 rundown
HMV been flogging it off for £3 or something, haven't they?
Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"
They built a city below sea level, right next to the sea, in an area of the country that is frequently hit by hurricanes.
This really should have been prevented, and George Bush does seem to be the one at fault.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"
Unless someone really doesn't like it. Been forty-odd years since they assassinated a President. Someone's gotta restart that 20-year pattern sometime.
RFTC RIP
Didn't realise they were still around.
Williams returns with a "gangster opera"
Gangster doesn't necessarily mean hip hop. Gangsters existed long before rap.
The first song that sprang to mind when I read the phrase "mini-gangster opera" was The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde. Although looking again, the placing of the hyphen suggests Bugsy Malone.

MTV makes me want to employ Ricci... Hell Yes
I was hoping there'd be a chance to rate Christina Ricci at the bottom of the article.
Was better when she had some meat on her, though.

Re: Maiden's egging - the backstage story
I imagine he probably said something. Dickinson's a top ranter on stage, and he's always been a bit high and mighty about the fact that Maiden never get played on the radio or MTV and still manage to have a solid fanbase. Clashes slightly with the Osbournes' promotional technique.
Sharon's a bitter old tart though.

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures
Yeah, but who wants to read DiS on the bog? People who don't buy Viz, that's who.
Rock rags record best-ever sales figures
Metal Hammer's readership is growing. Soon they'll be adults. Haha! hahaha! etc.
Frankly, I couldn't give a toss about music magazines. Got a damn good source of info right here: the news is more up to date, the coverage is more varied than any print mag, it doesn't cost a thing, and it's far easier to ignore the bits I don't want to read. Free CDs are pointless too, when I can download entire albums for nowt.

Re: Dimebag riff used in Nickelback song
In terms of bands that are comparable, Slayer and Sepultura piss all over them. Pantera always struck me as being a bit one-dimensional.
Re: Dimebag riff used in Nickelback song
I don't see the issue. If they want to pay tribute, let them. It's an odd notion that someone isn't good enough to miss a dead guy.
Re: PANTERA - BETTER THAN METALLICA
Unless I'm very much mistaken, Pantera don't actually exist...
Re: Killing Joke - Reissues
With every post you make, I find it slightly harder to believe you're really as young as you claim you are.
Re: Nine Inch Nails - Only
I thought "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" was something of a high-point.
InMe - White Butterfly
Oh dear. This reads like the sort of thing we would have published four years ago, when the site was run by precocious teenagers. "More unnecessary than a blind man's sunglasses"? Who let this through?
The album's not all that bad, actually. I'll probably not listen to it much, but it's more interesting than the debut at least.

Smooth Criminal? MJ Found NOT Guilty
Guilty or not, putting him in prison wouldn't have done anyone any good.
He needs help.
He needs help.
Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds
It's a NIN single. Which means it's a bit generic and bland, so as not to scare the public, and the album's going to be a lot more complex and creative. I hope.
iPod users: bowing to fashion or filling to capacity?
25gb of stuff on a 30gb Zen. Some of it hasn't been listened to, some of it gets listened to all the time. A lot of it's comedy/spoken word stuff that doesn't really bear repeated listening, so there's quite a high turnover.
Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
Dio was great. Heaven and Hell is a cracking album. At least as good as some of the classic Ozzy stuff.
Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
Having glanced at this briefly in the newsagents', it's nice to see that however crap the magazine gets, Kerrang readers still fondly remember Baby Chaos (Love Your Self Abuse in the nineties somewhere - yay).
Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
Oh dear yes. Technical Ecstasy was a bit dodgy, but Never Say Die was just horrible. Apart from a couple of minutes of lounge jazz it's unlistenable.
Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
Yes I can.
I wasn't talking about the eighties. I was talking about the seventies. Different thing altogether.

Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
How can people not like Queen? Are you all just listening to the wrong songs? They were great in the seventies...
Re: Black Sabbath: Top Of The Rocks
Sabotage, but then I'm mentally defective.
Re: 'No End In Sight'? Consult new supergroup, This Is Menace...
Add Jeff Walker and I'm salivating. Most of 'em I can take or leave - and that includes Casey Chaos, who I quite like at times - but some have been involved with great stuff. I'm looking forward to this.
Re: Punk goes bootleg crazy: 'mash-up' record due.
Hawk's dead too? Are there any WWF wrestlers from back in the day who aren't? Is Macho Man Randy Savage still alive?

Where In The World Is Crispian Mills?
I thought this was going to be a gag about him working in PC World.
Re: Where In The World Is Crispian Mills?
I think The Driven did release an album... maybe only in Ireland or on an obscure label or something, but I downloaded an album's worth of material off Audiogalaxy back in the day, and it wasn't the stuff off the EPs. Fucking good, too.
Re: Bjork and whose army? It's only for charity...
128kbs is the perfect balance between quality and file size. Presumably if it's good enough they'll ask for a better copy.
Re: The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: easy
"Queen should have been Don't Stop Me Now"
Especially since We Are The Champions is more than 25 years old (1977)...
For that matter, aren't Heroes (1977), Wuthering Heights (1978) and Night Fever (1978) similarly not from the last 25 years?

DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!
I've only heard one of those top 25 albums all the way through. And that was only once. I own two of the others but I haven't listened to them yet. I'm more indie than any of ya.
Re: Frances The Mute: revealed!
Oh thank god. I thought I was the only one who could see how naked the Emperor is. I've listened to Deloused a few times and I'm no philistine, but it's just a load of bollocks, isn't it?
I'd ask someone to explain, but I've lost enough of my life to it as it is.

Re: Frances The Mute: revealed!
Not even hilarious, just dull.
Re: Erasure's Andy Bell - HIV positive
I'd say it's probably something to do with the education thing he's doing about it next year. He's come to terms with it, isn't letting it ruin his life, and is now going to educate other people about it.
Could be a stunt though. Would it work?

Re: TOTP moves to Sunday on BBC2?
Some people just like music as background noise, though. So if they can get perfectly adequate background noise from turning the radio on or buying the album of the week from Woolworth's, then what possible incentive is there for them to put the effort into finding something else?
TOTP (like MTV, etc.) is music TV for people who don't love music. It's the musical equivalent of Richard and Judy's Book Club or Rolf Harris talking about his favourite painters. And as such, we shouldn't really give a shit about it. Our feelings should be focused on Jools Holland, the music coverage on BBC4 and whatever Radio 1 replace John Peel with.

Re: Mars Volta to release one-track album
"putting loads of potentially rubbish intertwining songs on an album isnt big or clever"
But putting loads of potentially brilliant intertwining songs on an album is big and clever.
It'll live or die by how good the songs are, not the fact that they flow into each other a bit.

Re: Mars Volta to release one-track album
So that's fifteen songs that merge into each other?
I presume it'll be five tracks on the CD. Or maybe fifteen. If they do it as one, that's just fucking stupid.

Re: The BBC
"The problem with the whole of the BBC in recent years is that it's got fixated on ratings and lost touch with Public SERVICE Broadcasting"
When of course the whole point of the BBC is to provide programmes that aren't ratings winners, and aren't ruled by advertisers. Quite why people use bad ratings as a reason to scrap the BBC is a mystery.

Define
Important.
T ome, for a band to be important, they have to have had a strong influence on other bands/artists. To be the most important of their generation, they have to have a huge and lasting influence on the music scene.
Are Muse and Radiohead that important? I don't know. I lost touch with that generation a long time ago.
The most important/influential bands of the last 10-15 years aren't Muse and Radiohead, they're Take That and the Spice Girls. And, in an entirely different way, Hear'Say.
