I don't think they actually played anywhere
between 1997 and Coachella 2006 did they? Maybe apart from the odd dj set.....

At The Drive-In/TMV are pretty far from straight edge!

I had a similar experience with a few gigs recently (Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Ryan Adams), where lots of new material is played.
I guess you have to accept, that this was a 'preview' show for the new album, and yes whilst that might lead to a worse atmosphere and you might not get Feel Good Hit Of The Summer, you got to hear the majority of the new QOTSA before anyone else, and in a live setting too. These preview gigs in intimate settings are just a different beast.....
He obviously
not sober yet - have a scan on youtube for videos of his first US gig (milwaukee), it's pretty rock and roll as far a bright eyes goes.....
