I really enjoyed this article
It gives hope to the least of us. I guess the point is, the elitism that once existed (and quite prominently) in the music journalism industry is being trumped by relativism. No biggie really. Magazines will likely always hold precedent over the Internet, except for those select few credible websites (DiS, pitchfork,etc...). Magazine sales will go down, sure, so perhaps they will re-emerge as a type of high culture publication which is purchased by an enlightened few. The plebs can have the Internet
One thing that shouldn't be understated in the entrie conversation that's taking place this week is this: at least people's interest in music isn't waning. In fact, it's probably getting stronger due to the filter of information being lifted.
I disagree about the review being interesting
Long-winded paragraphs disseminating specific songs with obvious touchstones and going off on tangents isn't interesting to me. Get to the point!
Also, there is nothing until the last sentence which justifies its perfect score. I guess i'm from a different school of music reviewing though
WHAT!?!?
Why highlight all the good things about the album and argue that the band actually has progressed only to give it a 5/10? Why is it so hard for this website to be complimentary about anything the least bit uncontroversial or unobtrusive? Good to see the reviewers are sticking to company policy at least
Someone please tell me
what was wrong with First Impressions of Earth?
I think lyle
should wash his sandy vagina
The Drones'
new album was indeed one of my favourites from last year (I live in Australia). They instil what it means to be Australian into the hearts of many who have been left disillusioned by countless years of Living Ends, Powderfingers and Grinspoons.
I popped my Falls cherry this festival past and it was well worthy of the hype that had preceded it for the 15 years previous. Dodos were my favourite, but add to them Mystery Jets, Franz Ferdinand, Late of the Pier and, of course, The Drones
Ok,
So here's the thing about S=Y. It probably makes a lot more sense to and clicks with a lot more people who grew up in the '80s. Sean eludes to this quite a bit in his synopsis of it.
Having said, it's still a very good album. Although not my favourite for the year, i can see why DiS would make it their number one (despite giving it only a 7/10 earlier in the year). I don't think anything about it is contrived, it's got several stand-out tracks, and making it number one gives a well-deserved plaudit to a talented and long-serving music-maker. Good on DiS for sticking with their guns i say.
The other thing about these lists is that there will always be people who disagree, no matter what gets thrown in there. So stop complaining.
What i'm proudest of in this list however is two Aussie albums in the top 5. Good on ya, lads!
Without thinking too much about it, and in no particular order...
MGMT - Time to Pretend
The Kills - Last Day of Magic
Beck - Gamma Ray
Late of the Pier - Heartbeat
M83 - Graveyard Girl
The Drones - The Minotaur
Crystal Castles - Untrust Us
Fuck Buttons - Bright Tomorrow
It's been a very dancey year, hasn't it?
Being from Australia
it makes me really happy that the editor of such a well-respected music forum would pick Cut/Copy as his favourite album for the year. It's a little bit surprising though, seeing as it has lost out heavily here to our other current indie/dance export, The Presets. But In Ghost Colours is a much better album, i agree.
I would post my top 8, but i haven't compiled it yet
With reviews,
it's got to be about the music. In Bon Iver's case, the way he recorded his album obviously had a huge bearing on the final sound. But no one really gives a shit what trouble an artist is in when reading a review.
With features it's different. You've got to delve into those tid bits because you can't someone 20-odd questions about their latest release or tour, it just gets dull. It's also harder to write a negative feature about someone because you've gotten to know them and made some sort of connection with them. I've seen negative reviews on DiS followed up by Q&A's which do a complete backflip (Presets).
Anyway, just some thoughts from the other side of the globe...
If you don't get them
that's fine
you're just a little dim
