Such a beautiful setting for a festival

The Norwegian metal bands were great, I finally understand why some of them have such long hair.

And in addition to those bands mentioned in the review, Slagsmålsklubben were great too!

and there i go copying the wrong thing

A) of course

festival, London 18 votes ? by Mike Diver Artists: Les Savy Fav, The Notwist, Of Montreal, The Mae S

This quiz doesn't really work does it?

When everyone can see the right answer.

hmm

this

was the soundtrack to my summer last year.

i'm going

to the one at gramaphone, because it's 5 mins away from my flat...

Might go to the one at Old Blue Last too, but that's 15 minutes away.

Cultural differences?

I've been trying to find out more about the independent scene in Hong Kong. It seems that the locals are just not interested.

The people who are involved in the independent scene are people who have gone abroad for school/university and so have grown up in a different way compared to the locals. The locals would rather go shopping or to the karaoke.

With the lack of support back home, I guess most of the bands have to rely on full time jobs, and so touring abroad is difficult.

me too

I might have a spare too, if my friends are foolish enough to not to come with me.

that reminds me

of the first time I saw trail of dead in 2000 (I think). I met Jason at the end, and he was talking about how they had been up all night the night before doing rock and roll things with Snow Patrol.

How times change...

yeah

what times are the bands finishing that night..

I have to get up at about 5am that morning, so I don't know how long I can stay awake for

this album is great

it's what the go! team imagined they sounded like

basically

the current promoters are still booking stuff up till Christmas. After that no one's sure.

wheatsheaf

in the process of being bought up by the people who run Raouls apparently

As for small venues, there's The Exeter Hall, but it's way down the Cowley Rd and Port Mahon.. but they're both tiny.

Then there's the Cellar left and that's about it.

their last album launch

was a wake.

tyk.. do very good album launches

:(

They were fun that one time I saw them.

I really wanted to drag more people along too :(

mixture of stuff

but i think that's what makes truck unique. I was thinking about this last night. There really isn't any other festival out there that has the mixture of local acts combined with bigger acts all mixed up in a pile.

that exposure for the local acts at truck is really important.. and i hope there's always going to be few of them around to play.

or just wait

last year, about a month before the festival, they were giving tickets away for free

Re: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm: Remixed

The original album came with a DVD, so unless they made it a double dvd boxset or something...

I Predict A Suntan Tour 2005: Komakino, Battle, New Rhodes + Forward Russia!!!

In Oxford, Forward Russia will be playing with The Young Knives.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

from that picture

Northern Uproar anyone?

That Great Truck Sound: Raveonettes join festival

Zea are a great duo from Holland. http://www.zea.dds.nl/ They have some mp3s on their site.

Re: Strike chaos! DiS offers to take over BBC

but if you have a right to vote, and they don't do it, then it's only their fault. So you can't assume that those people who didn't vote didn't want to strike.

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger

This album definately deserves repeated plays. I was really disappointed with it on my first listen, but at the moment it's one that I keep returning to. The songs are great (in a 3 min pop song sort of way), there are loads of energy, and lots of ideas within each song, really well constructed together. It's just quite scary how they can become so popular so quickly.

A quick word about Truck Festival...

too late.
it sold out this afternoon

Re: Erol Alkan - A Bugged Out! Mix

this cd is indeed very good. as for other great mix albums, the jacques lu cont one for the fabric series is ace.

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

buy it from HMV Oxford and you can get served by a member of the band!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

No Stone Roses:
Good Point. Why do I always end up being asked to play The Stone Roses, The Smiths, The Cure etc when I dj, usually by people who are far too young to remember them first time round anyway? Is it some sort of retro cool thing that I'm missing out on?

The Jericho is Back!

Matt, who told you about the new plan for the Jericho and do you know if someone has taken over the ownership from Mitchell and Butler? If M&B (who run the It's A Scream chain as well as many faceless chain pubs) still own the place, I don't give it much hope as a music venue.

While the Jericho's been a it's a scream pub they've tried many times to get live music going in there, and every attempt has always died off, either because the way they treat promoters in the place, or local music fans refuse to go to any of the gigs in it because of the way live music in some pub venues in Oxford were killed off in some of the M&B pubs. I won't go into the full argument here, but have a look at the discussions that pop up constantly on the nightshift board.

Re: London Hyde Park festivals take shape...

if they'd only swap over the mitchell brothers and stereo mcs for soulwax and ladytron that would be a very good day

or maybe they're just putting soulwax on the kasabian day. just so there's there chance of some people turning up

Re: Radio 1 getting jiggy with the new sh*t

I think local music radio shows should be something that local BBC stations should do every week. I wouldn't expect local commercial stations to do that, because afterall they have to worry about listener figures for their ad revenue. However local BBC stations are supposed to be about the community, and it should fit in with the remit

SxSw: Adventures on Sixth Street

I read on the recordoftheday messageboard about why a London based festival won't work. Firstly, remember that SXSW and other festivals like Midem are mainly industry festivals. So lots of A&R and Manager types TRAVEL to the festival to find new bands. If such a festival was actually held in a city where the labels are based anyway, it would be much harder to get the industry types out of their office, and if they do go to see some bands they'll probably just pop out for one or two bands, instead of just going from venue to venue to see everything. It's because they are away from their offices, in Texas or Cannes, which makes the industry festival work.

Re: Annie - Anniemal

it's not pop.

I was listening to this the other day, and I thought some of the album tracks were actually ladytron songs, until I looked at the song titles..
if she had black hair and black clothes, no one would be putting her in the same basket as kylie

Re: Radiohead drummer takes a Dive Dive

and to encourage more people to buy the single (see also school tours).. you don't need to sell that much to get into the top 50 now

Re: NME Slating

oh yeah, forgot to add. what's so original about the Others? Playing gigs in tube stations, causing chaos for other people who want to just travel somewhere?

Shit! I'm turning into an old woman. Where's my knitting?

Re: NME Slating

"The NME awards is the only credible awards ceremony out there at the minute,"
well I guess so, but it's only because they have the money to promote their brand. The sad fact is that the Brat awards used to be an alternative to the Brits, celebrating acts that would have had no chance at the Brits. Look at the winners this year, most of them won something at the Brits. Where's our alternative now?

And yes, I did waste 5 minutes voting in the poll, and obviously none of the artists I voted for won.

WE BELIEVE IN MUSIC (or why it’s really, really im

there's been reviews where people have complained that there's a lack of tunes on this album. But I guess those reviewers listen to Coldplay.

This year's been ace for albums so far..

Truck 2005! Ticket Info!

ahem..

they're on sale now.

Re: Truck Fest '04 announces full line up, tickets dis

nope misty's big adventure are always misty's big adventure, except when they are misty's little adventure. I think the Orff Orchestra are this year's verstoin of the zoltan Kodaly School for Girls

Truck Fest '04 announces full line up, tickets disappearing sharpish

and you haven't even touched on the other lives of some of the acts performing at the festival

There's a singer who's worked with George Harrison back in the 70s (Brute Force - you have to see him, he's great) and potentially a member of Television performing (if Lach's performing with his backing band)...

Re: The Shins

I think they're doing pretty well by themselves, without having to waste money on bribes + marketing. Their recent tour over here was sold out, and it looks like it's going to be the same for their current tour across the USA. The joy of great music like theirs is the power of word of mouth. People hear the album, and find that it's great, and they tell their friends and so on.
Only really really shite albums need to be sold on the back of blanket airplay and advertising.

Oh and I bought the album accidently when I was buying the Postal Service album from SubPop. It was cheap (thanks to the exchange rate) so I picked up the Shins album as well.

Re: The Shins

I'm glad they haven't had that much mainstream coverage (apart from the occasional 6music and radio2 plays). Part of the reason why I love their music so much, is how I stumbled across it accidently. If any of the songs had been blasted across the airwaves , it would have killed the album, and i'd be already sick of it.

Well there is the rest of the summer to go, to see if the media will kill it.

Re: Throbbing Gristle, Vincent Gallo and The Chapman Brothers curate ATP2005

But Matt Groening's music taste is quite well known.. he's had Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth etc on the Simpsons.

I'm a bit worried what the Chapman brothers might do, but apparently they did the stage set for some recent Wire gigs, so it might be ok.

As for Vincent Gallo's weekend, I hope we get more things like Sonic Youth side projects (since he's mates with them), maybe PJ Harvey and less of the RHCP side of his mates.

Re: Truck and Field

they did both. last year they headlined the tent on the sunday night (while i was onstage with ktb, so i couldn't see them. grrr) and the year before they were on earlish on the main stage on sunday (bringing along junk they found at the nearby car boot sale)

Re: Truck and Field

The $hit are also very funny, in a GLC kinda way, but maybe not as bling

Brave New Ideas #2: Thurs 4th March

Oxford's answer to Busted and Ash?

I'm sure the Dive Dive boys would love to know that they're like that. erm.
