Was actually bitterly disappointed with the album (as opposed to live versions of new tracks) but gave it a few days to breathe and am now really liking it. Was a little worried after reading some comments here, but all is well in Interpol world, hurrah.

is one of the best tunes Bloc Party have ever written, imo. Pity it hasn't got the recognition it deserves. And The Enemy beating Interpol to number 1 album - wtf?! At any other time I'd be pleased they'd got a number 2 album...

It's always been the British AND Irish music prize, as far as I can recall, so acts from both countries are eligible. Nothing to do with residence. Gemma Hayes got nominated a few years back. And I'd rather have seen her win than Ms Dynamite, but hey that's just me...

To be fair to the Arctics, their new album is quite good - miles better than the debut. But I don't think the critics'll be dealing out a second Mercury in a row to them.

That's 2 years in a row! (05 and 07, they didn't play 06.) Judging on the live tracks, this album is definitely worth the accolades here.
As for the ongoing 'Interpol sounds like someone else' debate... Rest My Chemistry is a standout track for me, but surely I'm not the only one who hears the Pixies in there?

A great little band. I'd avoid Humanzi though.
