good first single...
then all downhill from there. It was a bad sign, all the money being thrown at their releases.
missed opportunity
The lad's undeniably got an amazing idea and it's superbly executed, but just rapping about grimmer and grimmer stories and situations is surely just too tired these days. Isn't that part of the point of Eminem - that after a while the depravity just becomes cartoonish? I'd rather hear his talents deployed in a fresher direction. The lyrical blueprint has already been opened before.
Re: Alkaline Trio - Crimson
Well said. Dan's share is particularly notable on this album. I think he's considered to be a bit-part because he doesn't feature on the singles. Seeing them live, the division of labour is more evident. Great band.
Get Up Kids get up and go. Forever
A great band but they had lost the hunger. Gone were the frantically energetic shows of 2000 and before. Good to see they called it a day before it turned sour. The first and second albums are both classics.
Brit Awards: Dump Dance, Get Live
I don't want to be a boring old cynic but the whole Brit Awards thing is surely now far too discredited to be worth serious discussion. It's a complete sham, simply designed to boost music sales during a slow period.
LCD Soundsystem - Movement
Not a patch on 'Losing My Edge' or 'Yeah', but ok.
Babyshambles
The Lams are set for big things. Certainly not one of the more overrated new London bands.
The Faint - Wet From Birth
I'm seeing them tonight, very excited. But am I missing something or has the above done the NME trick and failed to actually review the record?
Re: Crossrail threatens Astoria with closure
You're right, but Essex doesn't really have one major centre, so it's problematic getting that kind of momentum up. Plus it's a fucking grim place to live (I should know, I live there).
The 5678s - Woo Hoo
Deeply unimpressive; the b-side is ten times worse. I can't help but wonder whether Tarantino was deliberately picking a bad band as a way of testing his power to promote an act (the musical equivalent of John Travolta). Depressing.
My Awesome Compilation
I know I'm an evil person, but with such a horrible, horrible, name I can't bring myself to check these guys out, despite loving the Get Up Kids et al to bits.
Re: Green Day record Jesus Rock Opera. Really
Green Day are capable of excellence, but they've not put together a consistent record for some years. Insomniac and Warning both had great moments but were about half filler. Warning was slated way too hard at the time. Maybe this back-story will allow them to focus.
Razorlight - Johnny goes off on one
Personally, I think it's nice to have rock stars who are prepared to be a bit self-absorbed, a bit opinionated. So, what he says might fall flat some of the time. Big deal. At least he's taking the risk of looking like a cock, and actually saying something that's a little bit inspiring. I enjoyed that interview more than the usual bollocks one gets.
Rilo Kiley join Bright Eyes/Modest Mouse tour
modest mouse are great but it's ridiculous how everyone's "discovering" them as if they haven't been at it for years. i'm not saying that applies to anyone here, it's just that for the way most people mention them, they sound like some brand new band.

'never lose your sense of wonder' and its b-side were top class.
since then it's all been downhill.
