"No one here likes them?"

I think quite a few people at the Astoria enjoyed the Young Knives set last week (myself included). "No one here likes them?" - a humdrum, uninteresting numpty comment if I ever read one.

Corporate Cowley Road?

I used to live in East Oxford as a student, and still visit the Cowley road weekly for social activities and what not. What I'm finding rather disturbing is the general influx of chains and larger business’ into the area. Within the last six months two sandwich shops belonging to a chain which will remain unnamed have moved into the area (one opposite the now 'carling' approved zodiac), both without planning permission or consultation with local residents. The absorption of the zodiac into the academy chain just seems the latest sly encroachment of larger business into the area. On the music front, let’s just hope other venues pickup the cause of independent music with as much vigour as the zodiac has done for the last 11 years.

i'll buy the lot!

Followed Hefner for a few years, and a poster of the 'We Love The City' album cover has proudly hung in each of my student dwellings. Hopefully everyone will buy this, the band will reform, and we'll get the chance to see the live Hefner experience again.

I went to Oxford Brookes

This was a pulsating gig. Their b-sides were better than most bands A's, but the main set was my rock n roll moment of the year. Apologies to insect life, remember me, spirit of st louis....and penguins!

Re; Applause, please; Clap Your Hands tour

Heard this lot on the radio tonight, and got hold of their album soon after. Enjoyed it after one listen and methinks it is a grower. Unspectacular arrangements, though tight with infectious vocals. Taking a leaf out of the Violent Femmes book...

We like trucking and we like to truck. Truck Festival 2005: reviewed

Fantastic weekend topped of by some lovely stuff by the Magic Numbers. Raveonettes and Brakes personal highlights....great tunes, style, substance. Biffy Clyro were'nt up to much, justifying their position as leaders of the emo pub circuit.
ps. Special note goes to Luke Smith & The Feelings (acoustic tent before Martin Grech on Sunday morning). A dry a dose of knowing English wit was needed on a damp rainy morning in Steventon.

Hot Hot Heat - Middle Of Nowhere

Splendid jumpy fun. Elevator is the spirit of early Talking Heads but without the oversize suits.

Engineers - Engineers

Shame they've had negative live feedback. The album reminds me of early Spiritualized and certainly works well in the dark hours. Quite different from the current crop of guitar troupes.

That Great Truck Sound: Raveonettes join festival bill

Fantastic news for festival goers. Their live performances this year have mixed up their 'velvet/mary chain' scuzz with a melodic new sound to great effect. It will be grand if 'Do You Believe Her' gets another airing....possibly my favourite two mintutes of monster riffing and lyrical anghst. There's also Sharon.....

Audio Bullys - Shoot You Down

Mr 'The_Glory' is not alone in recognizing that this is actually rather top. For all the cheese, it certainly got the Homelands festival jumping early on in the day (unlike our good friend Pete Doherty who decided to trash his equipment in a blaze of self-indulgent glory). Good fun.
