Teenagers!

Well I can say for at least one of them you are 4 and a half years out.

utter balls

a podcast I recorded about the weekend has just been put up here

anyone with 40 mins free listening time, have a listen!

http://smalltownamericarecords.blogspot.com/

i knew i shouldn't have commented on this

opinions are opinions and all. and i'm not getting peeved because they are my mates, that is completely irrelevant. i just think it deserved a bit more of a fair assessment on its own merits rather than being viewed as some kind of middle point between re-hashing the past and being an indicator of potential greatness. i don't think it is either of these things. i just think its a really good EP. maybe 7/10 is a fair enough score when compared to the great records. but then compared to most other stuff recently, and especially most things british recently it is definitely a 9. as a nation we produce and consume so much shit music, i think the good stuff deserves a bit more credit and support. though don't get me wrong, 7/10 is a good score, and this is clearly a positive review in many ways. and dom, you make a good point about going overboard. sometimes hype can be a bad thing. but again that is something outside the actual music itself.

anyway, whatever. well done for doing some good songs favours for sailors. now go away and take that next step forward by recording a full length album that fulfils your potential!

i'm not really sure how to take this review

it's a bit disappointing really, especially the last paragraph.

7 is a stingy score, and given for the wrong reasons. it's better than that, and better than most british music released for ages.

i hope when my band's album comes out later in the year it actually gets a fair airing rather than some half arsed inaccurate comparisons and a sat-atop-the-fence mark out of ten.

you clearly like this record, it's a shame you haven't allowed yourself to admit how much!

[just my opinion...!]

hockey night

are / were absolutely brilliant. Their last album 'Keep Guessin' is probably the most underrated indie rock album since the turn of the century. Really looking forward to what this new band sounds like!

excellent, william are playing!

didn't see you there RIGHT DOWN THE BOTTOM!

This is going to be a FAWCEOME weekend!

god bless alphabetical order

haha

counting crows still living in the 90s. Now there's a surprise!

ben folds five at the albert hall

remains one of the best gigs I have ever witnessed.

ATP take note - get them over here for a Whatever And Ever Amen show. BUT NOT AT FUCKING KOKO!

bands are 8 -11

club is 11 - 3.

you totally win

a more logical conclusion

would be that he (or she) was 5 or 6 years old.

i also must say this deserves more than 6/10

Biffy Clyro are genuinely one of the best British bands in recent years. I'm as disappointed as the next guy that they have become the rock version of Snow Patrol, but this compilation is great. 8/10 at least. Probably 9.

this is even more unbelievable than "The Best of Kula Shaker"

and on a par with "Space : Greatest Hits".

I picked up Maverick A Strike for £1 in MVE on Berwick St about five years ago, mainly for use at BBQ's with old friends from school (see also "Bring It On" by Gomez, and "Parachutes" by Coldplay).

I'd imagine this would be available at the majority of charity shops in any given town in the UK for £2 or less.

And aren't about nine of the tracks on this on that anyway?

What next? "The Essential Eagle Eye Cherry"?

i won't be the last person

to read that as Television.

i never understood why ben christophers never got famous

possibly the best British male singer songwriter of the last ten years.

dEMOnstration

should have been the headline, no?

everyone must see times new viking

but don't go to their first show on friday because it clashes with my band. Go and see them twice on Saturday. And come and see us at 8:10pm (friday) in the Ocean Rooms basement! 4 or 5 Magicians. I assume we were number 21 on the list!

no hang on

its C) Your Local AA Meeting.

Yep.

B) The Hard Booze

calvin johnson

good call. It is certainly odd that he hasn't played, and surely he's a big contender for curator in future? Maybe he has been asked and just doesn't want to do it? You basically said this. I'm agreeing with you in different words!

someone book the flaming lips

to do The Soft Bulletin as a Don't Look Back please! And Mercury Rev to do Yerself Is Steam. Actually lets have it on the same night. In the Royal Albert Hall.

i have the drunken scrawl in a bag somewhere

i'm going to look for it!

one time we actually curated a fantasy lineup

comprised entirely of Britpop bands. It was absolutely incredible. I think there is definitely a market for it!

either it was a very early one

or you are indeed mental.

Guided By Voices / Robert Pollard

Beck
The Presidents of the USA

THIS ONE GOES OUT TO MY HOME COUNTIES CREW!

best heckle ever!

scotland

isnt that in london?

i read that as "Southampton and Winchester"

Hampshire '08!

whoever scheduled

Girls Against Boys and Meat Puppets at the same time needs to be executed.

how odd

Brighton mask-rock legends Phil Collins Three played their last gig at the weekend just gone as well.

i think this review is missing the point a bit

it's like reviewing a kebab. It's always a bad idea in the morning, but you wanted it at the time and it tasted GREAT. Life has things like this all over the place, including music and Be Your Own Pet.

Maybe you don't eat kebabs.

i'm glad my rumour mongering was proved valid

I'd assume that there would be a couple more UK dates too between London and ATP. Unless they are gonna head off back to Europe before coming back. Who knows!

to be honest their album probably will get 6/10

because that's what it will deserve.

That's not to say that The Young Knives aren't one of the best British bands getting mainstream attention right now, because they are. But they aren't THAT good.

Music, in general, really should be better I think, and it's a bit depressing that bands like The Young Knives, The Cribs, and maybe a couple of others I can't think of right now, are the cream of the crop of bands getting mainstream exposure. Both decent bands for sure, and both bands I like and go and see live every now and then, but to say their stuff is worth more than 6/10 or 7/10 would be ridiculous if you are rating against classic albums.

I don't want to tail off into a rant but everything is so wrong about British music, mainly due to the way the industry (the press, radio, tv and everything) is set up, and has been for as long as I can remember.

It's time there was a bit of a change I think.

finally times new viking in the UK!

someone book them to play Brighton and get my band to support!

rumours

fleetwood mac performing rumours in its entirety.

Camden Roundhouse
Thursday 8th May
£35 + booking fee
Doors at 7:00pm
No support

not enough old stuff

she should have done "I Never Talk To Strangers" with Woody Allen.

someone just gave me a CD-R the other day

with simply "TIMES NEW VIKING" written on it. I assume it's this album.

If so, it's absolutely brilliant. Probably the best thing I've heard since ... umm ... dunno but it's freakin' awesome.

Also, I love the absolute FUCK OFFness of the fact it is recorded ridiculously loud!

First actual 9/10 album since 2006 that's for sure.

just reading through the others...

I'm absolutely shocked that not everyone has included Airbag, possibly the best alternative pop song both musically, and melodically, ever written.

assuming every album needs to be represented by at least one song

this is the definitive best fifteen songs given that criteria in their best running order...

1 - Airbag
2 - The Bends
3 - Paranoid Android
4 - Just
5 - My Iron Lung
6 - Lucky
7 - Pyramid Song
8 - There There
9 - Idioteque
10 - You Never Wash Up After Yourself
11 - Stop Whispering
12 - Fake Plastic Trees
13 - Steet Spirit
14 - The Tourist
15 - Motion Picture Soundtrack

absolute poo poo

the Brighton, London and Oxford gigs clash with my bands tour, the others are all too far away.

BOOOOOO

where and when!

?
