Jeez, the errors are outta control
Maybe it's because I'm an editor of a music mag, but I noticed there were quite a few (what I feel are) obvious errors in this story.
I know I sound like a school teacher, but here it goes:
- It's Vincent "Gallo," not "Gallow"
- It's "Scarlett" Johansson, not "Scarlet"
- The Nightwatchmen is not plural; it's singular: The Nightwatchman - just one dude
- My Bloody Valentine are/were not from Scotland; they were from Dublin, Ireland
- and "Defjux" is actually two words: Def Jux
Sorry for being so anal, but it's my job.
Cheers.
It's not particularly good
This album came out here in Canada a year or so ago and it's pretty weak (the overall reaction in the press was extremely lukewarm and indifferent). I hate to dis DiS, but I can't see the Still doing the label much good. The biggest problem is that Without Feathers doesn't even sound like the same band from 2003 (that's a bad thing). They should have stuck with the Interpol-aping sound instead of a real humdrum MOR college rock schtick. It's definitely what I prefer...
Nuts!
Since DiS seems to promote slagging reviews based on pure personal taste, I must say that this review is way, way off. This is the record I have listened to most over the last year (okay, besides "Silent Shout") and to my ears it's a near-perfect debut. That youthful hostility, those killer hooks, the handclaps! I'll admit, their name is shit, but - and I'm not just saying this because I'm from Toronto - I feel these kids are the most exciting band on the planet right now.
New album
Anyone else heard it? Not a drastic departure from Silent Alarm, but it's got some pretty mind-boggling effects all throughout. I think it's as solid as their debut, maybe even better (need some more time with it)... and that was my favourite album of the last five years.
The Gossip
Umm, not that I would expect anyone to realise it from reading the NME, but the Gossip have been around for a while now. I think their newest record's their best actually, but it's hardly a big stretch from their previous work. It's got more of a groove, but it's still minimal bluesy garage led by beefy riffs and a howlin' singer.
They are hardly, as you say, a "fad band." And what is that fad, might I ask?
I live in Canada and to anyone with an ear to the underground, they haven't been "obscure" since well, before they signed to Kill Rock Stars. Then again, they're hardly a hyped up phenomena over here. We don't quite work on the same level that the UK press does...

The reason
It wasn't their fault. I know members of the band and it had to do with whoever booked out their tourbus. Apparently there is only so much time one driver can log per trip, and when it came to getting to T the driver had exceeded that amount of time and therefore they had no professional driver for the bus. It was some overlooked detail that totally screwed over both the band and the crowd at the festival. Don't hold it against them - they couldn't do anything about it.
