this band are so good live

... it's unbelievable.
x

wah

yeh, why no mention of the supports, seems a lot of words to go without comment, Munch Munch and Yeborobo were both excellent.

It wasn't Sole.

I'd say a monitor switch and a floor tom check for a setup up as epic as theirs wasn't too problematic especially as they worked it into their banter.

The band meant it was rare to play with interesting support bands, they said they'd only played with 3 or 4 on the whole tour so having two bands they rated open was a novelty.

Yoni mispronouncing UTR was a joke seeing we'd done three shows for him prior and like you said their was a sheet behind him.

The show ended at 11.45pm, the last tube from Old St is at 12.35am.

DIRTY PROJECTORS
Dirty Projectors is a group led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Longstreth. Based in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, with connections to the Portland, Oregon scene, the group produces a distinctive sound of electronic experimentation, melded with traditional instruments and complexly harmonised vocals. Their recordings range from Prince-style one-man studio productions, to arranged orchestrations, to basic voice over nylon-string guitar, to an amalgamation of all these tactics. Following a string of releases for Marriage Records and Western Vinyl including 'The Getty Address' - a conceptual opera written from the point of view of Don Henley as a Spanish Conquistador - their latest LP entitled 'Rise Above' is out now on Rough Trade / Dead Oceans. It's an attempt to re-imagine the lyrics of Black Flag's 'Damaged' album from memory over a complicated music that takes influence from contemporary African blues and funk.

CHEVEU
Formed four years ago around a cheap Casio synth with prerecorded rhythms, Cheveu - French for "hair" - can be affiliated with the emerging weirdo-punk / shitgaze scene alongside Blank Dogs, Times New Viking, Pink Reason, Tyvek and Psychedelic Horseshit. Their RnR, electro psychedelic punk sound is mixed up with a tortured deep voice and a blown-speaker chaos, leading admirers of no-fidelity to their door. Byron Coley proclaimed in the Wire magazine "France's Cheveu have an excellent grasp on a very French post-punk dynamism, devolved in a lopsided way from progenitors such as Metal Urbain, Warum Joe and Berurier Noir. But whatever their model, these guys produce a superior guitar raunch with great mystery moves... The primitivism here is lush enough to make you fall over." We agree!

THE REBEL
The Rebel is the husband and wife side project of Country Teasers head honcho Benedict Roger Wallers and the marvellous Sophie Politowicz on drums. As politically flippant as the Fall, as anti-hi-fi as Beat Happening, The Rebel twists electronic fuzz, thriftstore casio, trashy guitars and pots'n'pans percussion into a bizarre mix of outsider art and DIY punk lunacy. Now joined by Alastair Mackinven, Country Teasers' guitarist since 1996, on bass the group concentrate on a new free glam sound, not being tied down to the same rules which govern that other group, such as machismo, Country, a hat, simplicity and attack. It is a more complicated realisation of the human brain's psychedelic geography, yo!

NO AGE
EX MODELS
SOILED MATTRESS & THE SPRINGS
Wednesday 21 May
The Dome, 178 Junction Road, Tufnell Park, N19 5QQ
7:30pm | £8 | www.wegottickets.com

NO AGE
NO AGE is Randy Randall and Dean Spunt - two heavyweights from the LA punk / skate / art underworld, who previously performed as two thirds of that post-hardcore DIY machine, WIVES. A crashing collision of sweetly shouted ditties, ecstatic crunch feedback and violent bouts of percussion, the NO AGE sound is abound with pop songs fighting to break through a mist of white fuzz. In March 2007, the band released a set of five vinyl only EPs across five different labels, including the 'Get Hurt' 12" on Upset The Rhythm, highlights of which have since been compiled for Fat Cat CD 'Weirdo Rippers'. The duo are now set to return to these shores in celebration of the May release of debut album proper 'Nouns' on the rather legendary Sub Pop imprint.

EX-MODELS
Ex Models were formed in 2000 in Brooklyn by brothers Shahin and Shahyar Motia, Jake Fiedler and Mike Masiello. After releasing the Talking Heads-esque 'Other Mathematics' in 2001, they took a brief break to attend college. Adding a new bassist, Zach Lehrhoff, they released a split 7" with the Seconds and 'Zoo Psychology' in 2003 - a genre-bending, ring-modulated album of Devo worship. Following the departure of Shahyar and Jake, Shahin and Zach hit back in 2005 with the 'Chrome Panthers' EP - indicative of their new "fundustrial noise" sound, with loops and drum samples provided Oneida's Kid Millions. After a 3 year abscence, the trio return to the UK to preview material from forthcoming new album "White Psychosis / White Dementia". A video documentary is also due in 2008.

SOILED MATTRESS & THE SPRINGS
Soiled Mattress & The Springs are a three piece instrumental band from New York City. The trio consists of cartoonist Matthew Thurber, who plays his sax with punchy and uplifting vigour, Aviram Cohen, who lends insistent garage rock beats and keyboardist, Peter Schuette whose sprightly hooks interlock with the other instruments making for an intuitive leap into a world of upbeat imagination. Their defiant jazz draws on the culmination of many different styles alongside a tasteful indulgence in humour and playfulness, treading a thin line between the crazy world of Arthur Brown and the leftfield pastures of Henry Cow. Their debut full length release 'Honk Honk Bonk!' is out now on Upset The Rhythm.

GIRL TALK
GAY AGAINST YOU
THE SCEPTRES
Monday 3 March
The Dome, 178 Junction Road, Tufnell Park, N19 5QQ
8pm | £7 | www.wegottickets.com

GIRL TALK
Huge in the USA, still cult in the UK for one very last gasp, Girl Talk is the stage name of plunderphonic party magician Gregg Gillis. Gillis, who is based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has released three CD albums on Illegal Art and vinyl releases on 333 and 12 Apostles. Gregg specialises in sample-based remixes, in which he uses at least a dozen elements from different songs to create a "new" song. At his early shows, Gregg became notorious for his exhibitionist antics on stage, spontaneously removing most or all of his clothing mid-performance. Recent album 'Night Ripper' bangs as a continuous mix packed with wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras. Current hip hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers, and rock anthems are all layered and pieced meticulously together into one non-stop celebration of pop and excess. Only Girl Talk's magical touch could please both dance-crazed teenage masses and mashup geeks with equal love.

GAY AGAINST YOU
Gay Against You are the enthusiastic, messy and very, very friendly duo of Lachlann Rattray and Joe Howe, who inhabit the middle ground between Cyndi Lauper and The Locust. Two subterranean creatures dressed in primary school PE kits, complete with charcoal-stained eyes and badly-concealed erections, they howl over electronics that unite delightful pop ditties and 'tardcore grizzle. Their debut album 'Musclemilk' is out now on Adaadat.

THE SCEPTRES
Yet more vital new sounds from the fertile Brighton underground, The Sceptres are equal parts hardcore, equal parts punk-pop - 90 second bursts of angular guitar scree, violent percussion and frantic howls yelped by Bryony of Backstabbath fame.

erm...

1. The band came over for a Europe-wide tour in March this year.

2. Ten of those dates were in the UK, so not really that small a tour.

3. They didn't play the toilet circuit, they worked with independent promoters and played a wide range of venues including Glasgow's Nice N Sleazys and The Common Place in Leeds.

4. Many of the shows were well attended and in London 200+ came out to see them play.

5. Behold is in fact the band's 5th full length album.

6. This album as well as their CDRs were recorded in the same studio, in fact Behold was released as CDR on Night People (their label > NP012) too.

7. Vinyl was released on Not Not Fun, 500 copies.

8. Darren and Shawn both play guitar in the band.
