"Like Big Business but bigger"
Thanks though.
Posters can be mail ordered which would be useful as I am moving soon and need to get rid of them all...
Thanks
How totally patronising. Thanks.
In defence
The singer grew up in America. It's his real accent.
Unit Ama
That was Unit Ama, we pulled out of the Newcastle LB show through illness...chris/lords
weekend warriors
All the guys in Comets have other stuff going on with work and normal everyday crud we all get snared up with. Hence Ethan does Howlin Rain as his 'full time' band. Comets are the 'weekend warriors'. They'll be around forever...
?
It's not even the best Top song! Get a grip!
Hmmm
I never think of the Scream as a proper band. If anyone had access to a pile of cash and could get anyone to work on their records, the results would probably be as good.
MC5
I can completely believe the comments about Primal Scream, they seem like a blank canvas that any current obsession on their/Gillespie's part can be painted on.
But I really think the person who wrote this review has no real concept of what the MC5 are about/were about. It shows in the completely hazy dismissal of them based very little on the gig in question.
The MC5 are far from 'over rated' as someone said. The fact that their very American rock n roll music is so normal to us now is thanks, in part, to their own efforts. There is a really exciting and primal period of rock & roll (Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis...) in America that only really succeeded in permeating the mainstream by removing all the elements that actually made it what it was: sex, drugs and violence.
The tales about Buddy Holly fucking everything in sight and having a 12 inch cock or Elvis getting "more ass than a toilet seat" or Jerry Lee Lewis marrying a 13 yr old, are all under-the-counter. Even now.
The MC5 were about that absolute primal moment in rock n roll that grabs all of the above. That they sound like a supercharged Chuck Berry just makes it all the more perfect. Expecting them to sound like some modern hyper rock band or some out-there experimental band is missing the point. They were the most extreme, to-the-point, exciting rock band of their time. Full stop.
I've seen the DK3 version a few times and been soundly blown away each time. They approach the songs with a dignity that I almost prefer to the reformed Stooges' fake stage invasions and engineered craziness. They celebrate their age and are better for it. The world needs more of that I reckon.
Thats
Ian Svenonius. I think you might have had something of a 'point bypass' sir.
It was me
Tidying wasn't so bad...
come on...
It's flippant and shitty. Don't put anything if you can't put anything insightful. I mean, we're the readers, you folks are the journalists right?
Perhaps just link some of the fucking amazing You Tube footage of him in his prime, that's easier and quicker and better.

could you maybe
write something a bit more intelligent about this? The last bit in particular is offensive and condescending.

PS
That's not a diss (geddit?) on anyone either.
In your opinion...
It isn't "whoa there brilliant" in your opinion and thats the point I raised in the review I tried to write. It fascinates me that as you put it "after 10 years shouldn't they have cleaned up all the newcomers" - well, no. Not if by circumstance and choice they not just go against the standardised way of promoting themselves but genuinely don't give a fuck about it.
This means all you have to judge them on is their record and that's something people find hard to do. They need more. They need an 'angle'. Bilge are always going to suffer because of that.
If someone reviews, say Lightning Bolt for example there is a certain amount of hype attached to that that leads the reviewer to not just review the record as an object but to review their thoughts about the band and what the band represents. These thoughts come from all manner of things they've read or heard, not just from the album concerned. If you don't have those things you have to review the record and nothing else and that's what leads to reviews like this which say more about the person who wrote it than the record they wrote it about.
I do have a personal involvement with this one but only as far as them being my favourite band, that's as personal as it gets. Anything I've ever done for them stems from that, and that includes writing things like this.
They're...
..awesome. Just don't try and figure it out, it's not art crit, it's rock music.

NO LORDS- SORRY
Sorry but a family crisis means Lords aren't going to be playing this. Or at least, all three Lords aren't. It's going to be me and Elvis (drums) with some other folks (being sorted at the moment) so sorry about that but it'll be rocking anyway

Admittedly
I wasn't there but if I imagine anything better than HOF I think it'd probably kill me, and you seemed to have lived so I conclude you are exagerrating!
Ha!
I never said I wasn't bitter generally, I just wondered why that choice of word came up. I don't think I've felt bitter about a gig except for maybe REM at Milton Keynes and that was a financial thing...
No worries
I think sometimes we're total bollocks live, hence my query...
??
Sorry, I posted that twice. I think I'm going mental.
Chris Cornell tonight though - get in.
Hey
We take criticism personally and so would be happy to offer a refund from our own pockets in future occasions that the gig leaves you feeling 'bitter'. I don't think I've ever felt 'bitter' about a gig, such a strange choice of word sir but one you are entitled to.
Hey!
I apologise personally. I dunno, give us another chance maybe?
"Poision"
You guys need a holiday!
Evan Parker and Evan Parker
2 Evan Parkers?
ha
Because Sean is like Bono right?

thats...
...my point exactly.
I just hate
I just hate music journalism. Like you hate poor people Bob.
>
I don't give a shit what it says about my band.
That's not the thing that gets my goat. I'm offended that he dismissed 2 bands I really love without thinking about the reasons for the whole event in the first place. It's almost not worth reviewing things like this, and if you do, you've got to see the thing for what it is - something fun for people concerned to be part of. I think when you review things like this, it's sometimes a little mean-spirited to rip on people involved when they weren't doing the show to gather appreciation or to be reviewed, they were doing it purely for fun and purely for the community they're part of.
And I think it's pretty funny to call someone a chump. I think the word 'chump' has a lovable quality, especially when the chumpee's "nur nur nur" point is a little flawed (in the sense that the band he mentioned didn't actually play).
The beauty of being a journalist years ago was that you always had the last word. You reviewed and that was that. The internet allows response on things and my motivation for responding is through love and care for the people mentioned. They probably don;t care as much as me about it, maybe I just have a beef with this type of website/comments/everyone has an opinion thing? I dunno.
