I've only listened to it three times, but I really like it
Usually takes quite a few listens to really get into their albums. It is missing some of the quirkiness of their others, but occasionally that can be a bit irritating, eg Uncle Charlie on the otherwise excellent Widow City.
Looking forward to most of them
and a few others including Florence, lethal Bizzle (who has been great for the past two years) and Metronomy.
Do you really think the Kings of Leon will be bottled? Not a big fan, but they went down really well a few years ago, when they were 2nd top.
£20 at brixton
I guess a bit less elsewhere, which isn't too bad, still reasonably pricey though. However they were excellent at glastonbury.
Oh if you're on O2 you can get priority tickets now.
Really good review
Told me quite a lot that I didn't know about an album I've listened to loads.
Has the album been remixed like Murmur was (and if it has does it sound much different?), or is it just that it now comes with the live cd?
That's pretty odd, even for the fiery furnaces.
A point about the file sharing business though: Not that I've downloaded it, but by releasing their new proper album a month later here than they are in the US, they give people more reasons to illegally download it.
There have been worse lists.
Can't think of too many glaring omissions, unlike last year, but I'd have put PJ Harvey and John Parish in there. My vote goes to Florence and the machine.
Blur were excellent
only just beaten by Neil Young for being best of the weekend. Really good choice of setlist, pretty much every song was a hit to sing along to and they performed them really well. Such as Tender, which doesn't sound like too much on record, but with the whole of the crowd singing along like that it was incredible.
I'd say Sunday was the best day for the music, Art Brut, YYYs, Nick Cave (with his two drummers - great stuff) and finishing on a high with Blur. Hopefully next year will be as good, but you'll have to go a long way to beat this year's three as headliners.
Yeah, it was great fun
I'd say either this one or the first one were the best. Certainly beats the freezing cold one a couple of years ago. Really liked Naive New Beaters, who I stumbled upon as well, Friendly Fires and the last three at the social, where it was ridiculous.
Can't say I got The Pains Of ..., just thought they were a bit dull and couldn't see how they pulled such a massive crowd.
Great day overall though.
play.com have it for £15
I haven't yet bought a copy myself though.
Good review. Glad it got 10/10
Definitely deserves it. I hope it gets a fair amount of coverage so more people can discover it. I would probably say it is my favourite album (by anyone). Very much looking forward to getting this release.
Totally this^
Had to do a double take.
No Portishead in the top 5
Boo boo boo. Oh well, at least MIA was up there.
Can we please get Ade Edmonson's view on the pluto prize winners.
Yeah, Crystal Castles were brilliant
Probably only second after Bloc Party for the weekend. Alice properly threw everything into that performance didn't she. The Kills and Bizzle were very good as well, as was most of the dance tent.
It seemed to be where you stood
as the second sets of speakers seemed to be loud enough and it was also ok if you were far enough back and in the middle. But if you were down the front, where most of the biggest fans of a band would be, the sound was pretty crap. You could hear normal conversations during the raconteurs.
Maybe moving a few speakers to the centre in front of the stage may help.
They should just take the attitude they had in Werchter and turn it up proper loud!
More importantly
why did they put Justice on at the same time as Bloc Party and then have a really crap choice for who to see last on the Saturday.
Don't know
but Avenged Sevenfold pulled out on the day, so it may have been them you heard about.
^this
definitely one to get violently lost to, not one to listen to expecting them to sing any note right. She was climbing all over the tent and managed to get the crowd really pumped. Great stuff.
Thought most of the bands seemed to get the dance tent going in reading though. Lethal Bizzle was ridiculous.
Pendulum or Bullet For My Valentine?
Both are suitably rubbish enough to go on Sunday's mainstage bill.
TVOTR in the UK!
this is pretty fucking good.
Does anyone know if this is the same for Notts selectadisc?
They obviously aren't doing as well as before as they made the shop half the size fairly recently but would be sad to see it go.
This is pretty frustrating
When there are albums that are some of the very best of the year, not just in the UK, that haven't got a look in. Portishead and MIA aren't exactly obscure either so I am pretty surprised they aren't in there.
When you see BSP's album (not bad, but not really brilliant either) in there over those two it seems ridiculous.
On the "token" acts, I think that it is good they have a couple in there (if they are good at what they do), as I probably will give them a listen and wouldn't have come across them otherwise.
"MIA, Foals, Burial, Portishead I reckon are all dead certs"
Oh well, shows what I know. Quite surprised at the lack of MIA and Portishead, surely they are two of the best UK records of the past year.
Bit surprised at those odds, surely Portico Quartet and Rachel Unthank & The Winterset are real outsiders.
I'd go for Radiohead out of those, great album although they don't exactly need the publicity.
MIA, Foals, Burial, Portishead I reckon are all dead certs
I would go for MIA to win, but it will have been out for about a year by the time it is announced so will probably not be deemed 'now' enough by the judges. Reckon Portishead is the best album but can't see that winning.
Reckon Hot Chip may be in with a shout for a nomination.
Glastonbury coach drivers seem to be rubbish on the way there
One got to Glastonbury, the town, and assumed he had arrived, then preceded to get lost going the rest of the way there. Another one drove past the main entrance up to the drop off point so we had another hour and a half of queuing. Why are they so crap at their jobs? Can't complain that much though as it took my mate who was driving 14 hours to get back last year.
Also got lost coming back from Radiohead in victoria park when we decided to walk back to stratford but found out the route we were going to take back had a massive olympics site on top of it and ended up wandering along unlit canals in east london.
I've heard it'll be their best since Definitely Maybe
or maybe it will sound just the same as the last four.
Is the one in the top left Jo Lean
of Jing Jang Jong notoriety?
and 'Climbing up the walls'
which was absolutely brilliant. And I would rather they finished with 'Idioteque' as well.
Excited about seeing them again at werchter next week. Anyone know if they have played 'the rip' live yet. That would be very special.
Well, I thought it was ace
Didn't really care for listening to the hits, but you could tell that a large amount of the crowd did from their reaction to 'Just'. Really glad they played 'Climbing up the walls' and 'The National Anthem'. Hadn't heard 'Bangers & Mash' much before, but thought it fitted in very well and hope they carry on playing it. 'Idioteque' was the perfect way to end things off. All in all, an excellent gig.
No 'I might be wrong' though, but hopefully will get it at Werchter next week.
Portishead - Third wins for me
Excellent album. Nick Cave's one is also pretty good. Liked the breeders as well.
Don't think it has been a particularly good year for albums. Most of the debuts that I was looking forward to have been a bit meh.
yes, she is shit at touring
Didn't turn up in Nottingham, back in December. No mention of it being cancelled on the website or anything at the time just a note on the door. I wouldn't bother buying tickets in advance to see her again.
But loads of bands have a preview of the album online
REM did it recently and loads of not as big bands do it as well, eg Fleet Foxes and Twilight Sad. So this isn't really much of a gimmick.
Does this mean the other toilets will be really shitty?
What a joke this festival is.
Did the survey also say 58% of people do not prefer a day-long music festival with no overnight stay.
This is hardly a surprise is it?
If a singer had won it, they would be number 1 this week. Also this isn't that different to the success of the Gossip following their song being used on Skins.
I am disappointed that he does not have a comedy name unlike Pol Potts last year though.
Not bad if you live in nottingham and have a brother who lives there
Like me. Hooray. Although lack of job and money is an issue. Gah!
Didn't they say this about the last album
and then said it was a joke to wind up the media?
No Lions to sit on though
(emo-style) :(
Here we go
Forsyth, A. J. M. & Cloonan, M. (in press, 2008) Alco-pop?: The Use of Popular Music in Glasgow Pubs. Pop Music Studies, 31, 1.
Journal of Popular Music Studies - it's hardly 'Nature' is it. The guy should stick to looking at alcohol, rather than try and get in the newspapers.
For the amount of scientific research done in this,
you may as well have just asked that chump's opinion.
What an imbecillic study.
And it's funded for by the NHS!
I'm pretty sure
that most people on here seem to think it is. So it makes more sense for the reviewer to refer to it rather than blue.
I think it is pretty well written
1) There are two references in there, which isn't that many. Most people on here would say Pinkerton is their best and as that was released after Blue and their last excellent album it makes more sense to refer to it.
2) Everyone has opinions.
3) It was mentioned above that the reviewer had a full copy. Most reviews do not mention all the songs. Or do you want one of those track-by-track reviews that people do on amazon, which are just frustrating.
Is this really such a surprise?
Why do people keep on clinging onto the hope that they will release anything as good as the first two albums.
That Andy Cole song
was probably the most bizarre thing I remember from top of the pops. A true WTF moment.
Very dissapointed
that the headline wasn't "Coldplay won’t be ‘doing a Radiohead’".

I thought the Progidy were incredible
Full of energy are wound the crowd up into a frenzy. Ian Brown though was about the dullest thing I heard all weekend. Fool's Gold was really flat and that was one of his better ones.
Arctic Monkeys were alright, but considering it was a festival headline slot, they could have thrown in a few more of the older songs as quite a lot of people around me seemed a bit bored by it.
