The whole "an open letter to"

thing is pretty pathetic. Just send the message to it's recipient and be done with it.

I like it

So he's playing

at the Brum Bar Academy the same night that Death Cab for Cutie are playing in the main Academy next door? Error.

Scratch that

it's actually more like "I had the time of my life" from Dirty Dancing.

The sax solo

is really reminscent of the Baywatch theme tune.

Not much

danger of your theory being tested anytime soon though eh?

Moments later

he snapped the turkey's neck like a twig between his thumb and forefinger.

That line

"I wanna be a soldier who a captain on some sinking ship would stow far below"

is pretty wretched no?

Yeah

lets all have a fight to see who loves music and hates racism more!

The National + Band Of Horses

= me increasingly glad about my Glasto ticket.

Is this finally out?!

I've been waiting for it since about last July.

Leonard Carbon Dioxide Hen?

Just as well

it's genuinely really good then.

They're actually playing Birmingham

I'm stunned.

This is pathetic

Why can't I

get hold of this album anywhere in Birmingham? Is it only available on import at the mo, or is Birmingham just rubbish?

E dressed as the Unabomber

= typical Myspace user? Worrying.

It's achingly hip

until you're hopping about on the back patio trying to clean off some dog poo with a hose and a stick.

It wasn't the lo-fi bit

that I was objecting to.

Why does new information about Blur

always come from The Sun newspaper? I never used to have them down as tabloid fodder.

"whimsical lo-fi indie"

is a massively innaccurate description of The Thermals' music. Also, I'm guessing from what you've written that you meant to give The Thermals 4 and The Cribs 7.

Brilliant song

although it's about a year and a half since I first heard it - new material soon surely?

Also, isn't the line "At every occasion I'll be ready for the funeral"?

This is in my bag

roll on being at home!

On hearing of the man's death

my first thought was honestly "I wonder what Someone Still Loves You Boris Johnson will do". I'm not sure what that says about me/him/them, but hey.

Police couldn't charge anybody?

Last time I checked it was illegal to piss on someone without their consent.

Way to twist their words

with that out of context headline quote. Very tabloid.

Ps.

is Brian a relation of Jimmy?

I don't see the point

Coxon and Albarn were clearly pulling in opposite directions after 13. Graham Coxon was clearly happiest on the self titled album and wanted to drench everything in distorted guitar (as he has done with his solo stuff), where as Albarn wanted to move on to the more "world music" inspired sound of Think Tank, Gorrillaz and TGTBATQ. You can't really have a definative encapsulation of Blur's sound, because the most interesting thing about them was how they morphed over the years.

If The Bluetones were a one hit wonder

(which they weren't), wouldn't that hit be Slight Return rather than Bluetonic? Besides, I remember their first album being rather well like and respected at the time.

WHOOP!

No

but he could just not bother to publish a whole three paragraphs dissing it, when the gist is "your singer is a sell out and I don't like your bland, overproduced ska".

Perhaps we should be thinking context sensitive

e.g. if I die in a car accident - In The Backseat by The Arcade Fire, if I die in a house fire - Burning Down The House by Talking Heads etc...

I'd go with "It's a Motherfucker" by Eels

Self indulgent - yes
Tearjerking - yes
Swearing in a house of God - oh yes!

All these people are missing the point

Blunt clearly wrote that song about a Dorset farmer.

Also "Gone are the dirges of yore" - how ironic.

hmmm....

Radiohead - Kid A
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
Eels - Daisys of the Galaxy
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
The National - Alligator
Million Dead - A Song To Ruin

Maybe not all "the best", but definitely the albums that I come back to time and time again.

So which of the new songs

would you like to see on the album. For me:

Videotape
Arpeggi
15 Step

Bangers 'n'Mash and Bodysnatchers on the other hand are properly shit from what I recall.

Yes

Yes it is.

They played it on XFM just after they reported that he had died, while I was listening on a portable radio at Kings Cross. I nearly cried in public.

I might dig out his album sometime

and have another listen. I liked it quite a lot at the time, although it veers dangerously between cheerful pop brilliance and being properly cheesy.

I'm away all next week

in a land of no CD players and get back to Birmingham on Friday night. I will be watching Cursive the following night. That gives me 24 hours to fall in love with these songs!

It's Michigan that I struggle with

I love Seven Swans and Illinois and this album ain't half bad for "also rans".

There's been no skip button pressing from me

OK, Skip Divided is none too great, but the rest just keep growing on me. The track which has reallyh crept up on me over the last few days is Cymbal Rush - it's frankly awesome.

I think that Pinkerton is overrated myself

and only really love Blue. I'll not be too sad to see them go, but they soundtracked my summer once upon a time when I was 15, so I'll always have that to thank them for.

yeah

please use those as standard - it's a very good idea.

WOO!

I've just accepted a job in Birmingham - this will make a fine start to proceedings.

Dunno about the rest of the film

but it's going to have a rubbish ending.

The weaker stuff

on Plans is more let down by the composition and instrumentation than Ben's lyrics and vocals, so there is no reason that to believe that a new Postal Service album won't be of a very high standard.

Not exactly "overt"

just a general anti-war sentiment.

I don't recall anything overtly political

o his last two albums and only one or two on Lifted... When The President Talks to God is the only example that immediately springs to mind.
