Hot tin roof

Mike Burnell now shooting for Drowned In Sound.
Your stock just went up DiS.

My Vitriol

Was the greatest set ever. along with my best compadre we created an air guitar pit which lots of people commented on after, including the band. super duper!

Symposium - Fair Weather Friend
Terrovision (they owned Reading 96-99) - Alice What's The Matter
Dillinger Escape Plan - ermmmmm.. anything?
Beck - Loser
L7, Vex Red, American Hi-Fi, Hell Is For Heroes, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Graham Coxon, Supergrass, Atari Teenage Riot - all played incredible Reading sets.

Good call man good call.
Funeral For A Friend - This Year's Most Open Heartbreak

Nedry will be ace

They're on pretty early but Nedry are amazing, and the singer is pretty cute.

The Avangelist Says

Don't forget why you started playing. So so many great UK bands have thrown in the towel because they haven't been able to make a career out of playing music.

Sure we'd all like to just play the odd show every month, ring in a few hundred or thousand people and make a fat wad of cash, but is that really why you started a band?

When it starts becoming about the money, you are already playing for the wrong reasons, if you don't enjoy it, and respect it for what it is, then you are already screwed.

Give away everything and it will be repaid to you tenfold, don't disrespect other bands or people in the industry, or the industries that support you and just be yourselves.

I bought this in error

I wasn't paying attention to the Amazon page and thought it was by Unida. It's so not even close.

not sure they can top

In The Absence of Truth.
That album was blinding. For me it seemed that everything was leading to that album. This one I have listened to once and wasn't particular impressed with, which is a real shame because even live the stuff sounds good.

BSMROCKS @ Hobgoblin

Well the bsmrocks wasn't part of TGE but was probably the best event of the wkend, similar to last years anti-show which featured Cancer Bats, Johnny Truant, The Ghost of a Thousand and Hexes.

Cuz it wasn't part of TGE there was no 1in1out, and although there weren't enough mic's for any bands, was pretty hot.

I took some photos from the show which I will get around to publishing soon. there is just one from the Mutiny on the Bounty set on my blog www.avangelistphotography.com

BSMDOESFUCKIN'ROCK

Valencia

used to be full of indie clubs, there was an entire road loitered with them. Every other bar was indie, I watched elastica do DJ sets there once upon a time.

The problem with Indie club nights in the UK is that they tend to be run and DJ'd by people who still under 21. As a result you basically get the NME/Radio 1 play list and they forget the classics.

Having said that after many many years of the Pav Tav in Brighton If I ever hear Joy division (not going to say the song but rock the boat and say they only had one song anyway), Blur Song#1 or The Smiths Big Mouth I have grown despairingly tired of the turgid gash that is the 'indie' scene.

The Leadmill, and Cockpit were two great places in the late 90's

left over lyrics...

or ones that he knocked up only a week ago?

dum dum duunnnnnnnnnn!

Where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him?

and another thing about this poxy redesign

sort the f*cking style sheet out.

If I put a paragraph in I expect to see a paragraph not a slither in-between sentences.

You got to balance the see saw

You know what the worse thing is? Flicking through the shallow pages of NME to read how amazing every album, single, gig, band, monkey flinging shit is.

What is stinks of is a publication who are dependant on the record labels wanting to buy space for adverts and more often than not artist coverage.

If you only write good things about the things you like then you have no juxtaposition. You need to hear what is bad to understand and appreciate what is good.

A brilliant example of this in current media is the release of the second album by Bring Me The Horizon, a band who have seemingly amassed a cult following for being under 18, having bad hair, worse dress sense and a front'boy' who started his own clothing company with the help of his un-employed mummy before peeing on someone in a tour bus.

The album is being absolutely destroyed by all of the rock press most stating they hope that the people who buy it realise how terrible the band is, that they lack any purpose and start listening to something worth while.

If YOU don't tell these bands they're shit, they wont take stock at some point and change direction.

Take Metallica as an example. St Anger - crushed by the press disowned by the fans.

What do they do about it? think hard about what they are writing learn from their mistakes and make a much much better album with Death Magnet.

Negative journalism or 'criticism' is vital to the existence of a band, their progression as artists and the integrity of the publication that is printing it.

if you lack content

make everything bigger. Designer 101.

problem is, it now looks ugly nothing is tidy. oh dear the 2 changes ago worked better than this.

You're always gonna get haters

fabulous

that means I have photo's of yet another bands last ever gig.

trigger the

boredom.
They weren't very good at all, loads of people had recommended them but I wasn't impressed. It was a bit like Lord Of The Rings, lots of strange looking folk with badly groomed beards.

Meshugga on the other hand. There is a machine which has been finely tuned over the years, and the Brighton show was amazing.

I reviewed it for live and loud web magazine - loads of pictures.

10yrs

is not late enough, did he learn nothing from his nearest and dearest? his band have already been around too long, they should have quit after Colour and The Shape!

ggggggggggrind

Well - Kill Em All, Ride The Lightening, And Justice For All, were too tinny and way too much treble.

There is waaaaay too much bass on Master of Puppets, Black is not far from being perfect, and I hate to say it but Load had the best production quality of the lot, then again the guitars on some tracks were layered up to 41 times.

I thought that the sound quality on the video and stream single they put out before had been massively compressed for the web, until I got the album and realised that the whole thing sounds like that.

It is pretty poor, but I swear engineers don't know their arses from their elbows any more.

another day at DiS

"morning guys, what we going to write about today"?

"I dunno dude, pretty slow music week what with big chart news about Metallica, this whole soft drink mess with Jack White, yet more British new comers splitting before their time, some excellent releases, tickets still on sale for the whole Nick Cave and The Badseeds tour. I am not really sure there is anything to tell the world about"!?

"........."

"........."

"........."

"Shall we just read what's on Pitchfork this morning and do something similar"?

"never done that before, sure why not"

one off? me ting tings not

the support slot for the entire UK tour for Counting Crows States Ben Folds Five not Ben Folds.

Wonder if it is a glaring error shortly to be rectified?

excellent in pictures

Great to see a bit of in pictures action. Perhaps new improved mighty DiS will run more of this!? *coughs pointing bony finger out towards his own website www.avangelistphotography.com and giving a cheeky little wink that would make the grannies swoon.

It's still not making me want to sell a knacker

I think I have seen all the acts on the bill, and none of them are really amazing to watch, once again it's a line for the ATP elite, a bunch on chin scratching post-rock muso obsessives who still cry about Slint not appearing in the Q top 100 bands of all time.

I will probably go shoot it though.

have you actually been to Reading before?

killers and ting tings hardly against the grain, in fact pretty much equates to the tradition set by Mean Fiddlers brief stint as curators of peddling Label shit for better money.

I lost the point a decade ago when they started getting Lazy with the main stage.

Seriously? How much money is it going to really take, I mean really to get ACDC to headline sunday?

That would be worth the 600% markup on ticket prices since I first went

I saw them many times

Their performance at reading I think it was 95 or 96 was incredible.

I remember watching them at I think it was the Astoria and being blown away but the intensity, it was the Evil Empire tour, completely mental.

Reading - their last ever festival performance was the most crazy, I was in the huge circle pit in front of Morello, and my T-shirt actually got ripped from my body, leaving me somewhat chilly for the rest of the afternoon.

I then saw their last ever show in London that christmas and it was tight, but somewhat disbondent

that's just saved me £100

Right what shall I do on Sunday now? Roll on December 1st.

They were great in Brighton

I confess - I had a big hard on for The Blood Brothers, when they spazzed out and screamed lots. Crimes.. it was good but no This Adultery is Ripe and Young Machette.. well to date I have not managed to get from beginning to end.

So it was quite strange to find I was engrossed in Jaguar Love at Audio in Brighton. I like to watch people who look like they are really enjoying themselves and that is hard to come by these days.

Oh would you believe I took some photo's! why not look at them on my website www.avangelistphotography.com

If I see a facebook API

I will vomit into my shoes and wear them for a week.

I will take snapshots every six 6hrs and post them to my flickr account (www.flickr.com/photos/theavangelist) then the new lastFM API will let you hear the sound of my squelchy shoes as you look through the funky Flickr API for DiS, to see the sodden soles posted to the new community photo gallery.

Oh crap have I spoilt the predictable impending surprise?

I am all for mash up but whatever you boys do, make it good :-)

Hold on a second...

Let me get this straight, anyone been to Docklands Arena? You will all know how shit that is to get to and from for gigs.

Millennium Dome? Even more of a pain in the brown starfish.

You have to pre-book a car parking space! totally gash.

On the flip side I know people who have been there for gigs and said the sound is pretty tight.

A) Of course not, you fool!

The left of Garlic and Onions will be sufficient to keep the country bouyant.

However all the bycicles could weigh it down along with the extroverted arrogant ego's and the influx of stripey sweaters may cause the rest of Europe to mistake France for a giant Zebra crossing between the continent and Great Britain.....

Wait a minute they all think that already.

the halls of Cherry Coke?

Prodigy from day one were impressive.

Experience was perfect, more so for the fact that the cassette my mate gave me did not include Wheather experience which was weak. That album sat in my bag every day to school alongside Nevermind, As Bad As They Want To Be and Chaos AD without a hint of irony.

It just worked. It did spark more interest in dickheads with Ultimate dance, Helterskelter (and whoever else was putting on shit raves) Bomber jackets and record bags, but there are always bad points to any genre.

Phoenix festival was everything courtesy of Skunk Anansie, Prodigy and Terrorvision, and the times I witnessed them perform after that were just as astounding, in particular Reading on main stage after release of Fat of the Land springs to mind.

thank christ i dont have any

if I had seen an album on that list that I own I would have had to rethink my entire buying ethic.

Please do correct my if I am in error here, but am I right in saying that on the basis of that list there has not been a single hard rock/ punk/ metal/ or eletronica album released other than that pile of turd from Portishead in the last twelve months??

Funny my band account would differ.

whooo?

wwwhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo?

shit i am feeling lazy

I actually can't be arsed to read that article because the paragraphs are tooooooo loooooong. It's like everything is all about everything else and it carrys on and on along the page like some, Boom Bip style stream of conciousness never ending in its quest to devour all the white space that it relishes upon. So hungry is it that it must feed on every pixel that is not being used by the stark hard typed, punched out kernings of each letter burning into the very heart of this page. With little or no remorse, it battles on through the blockade of my very inner sanctum.. he he I said sanctum that sounds rude. Give me my ball back.

Oh crap now I have gone and done it too.

I guess thrash heads

probably think Slayer are the be all and end all, but I have been listening to them since 1989 and every album has 1 maybe two great tracks if you're lucky and the rest is just pedal note filler.

I think in the grand scheme of things thrash is limited, look at how metallica evolved over the 2 decades they have been going, people slate 'tallica for deviating but it has at least kept them fresh regardless of what the opinion may be of what they are putting out.

amazing the number of fiberfib

stories, brilliant I don't feel so alone!

had to fly to Barce too expensive for Valencia, tried to pre book trains after some advice and some oz bint in STA travel told me don't bother.

BOTHER! because if you don't you can rarely get on a train in spain.

3hrs on tarmac at Gatwick due to luggage problems. then 4hrs on train by the time we got to campsite I was feeling pretty shit and was struck down with exhaustion and heat stroke for two days, so monday + tues were a bit of a wash out.

We were escorted off the "wrong" train by armed guards on the way home with about 25 other people and ended up saddling up with a guy from Manchester to find our way onto the right train via 4 changes and having to pick people up from that massive resort outside barce.

Food in barce station was aaaaaamazing though best long lunch I have ever had. Then slept for 2hrs on the floor waiting for check in.

My advice. book a mid evening flight home and accept a days travel even going to Valencia.

I would like to think

that nobody who listens to music has ever done so on the merit of someone elses opinion and especially a music"journalist". It is something you have to make up your own mind on.

Of course where I live is in the candy cane forest with gumdrop trees and the streets are paved with chocolate.

Even there Coldplay have a #1 record.

never been a huge fan

and I don't think this is an album to start your investigations with.

It just isn't very good.

when mean fiddler sponsored the event

They at least had a good concept control over site layout and organisation.

Carling in my mind destroyed the festival. You may think that is a stupid statement but sponsors play a heavy hand in certain organisational and structural aspects.

I haven't seen anything new and interesting at Reading in over a decade, not since either the N64 world tour van or the (if anyone can remember the days before V) giant Virgin Free Tea Mushroom, now that was good.

oooo blackberry tea, I may have to source some now :-)

after whiley left the wing of lamaq

who lets face it was clutching at straws most of the time anyway, she became a chart churner for R1, so I go on the basis if that it is in her slot (tee hee) then it is toss.

I am fairly certain I have heard all acts mentioned in previous posts.

It is always boring buuut the term POP is lazy for popular, therefor if more than 20,000 people buy a record they are a pop band, that includes Slayer, Slipknot, Aphex Twin et al.

last night

I felt exactly what I imagined it to be like if I did indeed drown in sound.

Really good, did anyone actually bother watching Graham Coxon? Much crack?

rspce

I am no fan of whale songs for 2 hours myself either, but perhaps that is an opinion of those of a certain home town? How many DiS readers have copies of Unhomes album? Hard to compare what was and now is without it.

And if you haven't got it, buy it you bloody fools http://www.unlabel.net

I think

deftones-deftones and saturday night wrist both seemed to slip under the radar for some reason, have to admit I don't entirely know if I have ever heard Saturday Night Wrist, and only 1 or two off Deftones stand out like hexagram.

But White Pony.. that should have one some kind of best album in the world ever award. It was in the right place at the right time and still to this day (I know it's not that old) pulls at the heart strings and fires people up all at once.

Perfection.

are there

added tranks on the yank crime re-issue?

I have never used a credit card so fast

I am literally peeing my pants.

so long 70 quid for four tickets
hello mezcal head

while i appreciate

that having stuff thrown at you is annoying, that is totally unprofessional and somewhat foolish.

What I liked far more is the fact that the security team winched the dumb kid out the crowd to see his fate.

ha until I put my glasses on..

I thought you had written Muse will only ever have a set amount of boundaries.

Lets not start talking about that talentless fuckwit. Just like Satch and Vai Bellamy is a one trick pony.

"ooh how can I play this arpeggio this week guys??"

cock

I don't totally agree with that

MBV weren't totally unique, their first few releases sound just like the tripe that everyone else was doing at the time. Loveless became unique because it was a well fluked album the same as Slint's Spiderland, it is a rare case of all the right things falling into place for a brief moment in time.

There is a reason they split and why Primal Scream was so completely different (and he says dodging the stone throwers) and essential total shit bar 1 or two singles at a really heavy push.

You could easily say any band that has put a guitar through more than one delay pedal at any time sounds like MBV but Jefferson Airplane did stuff like that decades before and The Beatles before them, and I fucking hate the Beatles

Yes

I was flossy

live is where it counts

I don't think that anyone can really stand up to My Bloody Valentine in terms of what they achieved albeit with more underground and a slow burning success.

My opinion is that My Vitriol were the closest thing to becoming a similar sounding band and were absolutely amazing to watch perform.

I think this is where people will realize how skilled MBV were/are. The opportunity for a new group of gig goers to actually see what really made them so credible by getting the opportunity to see how intensified their crafted sound was in a real time environment.

goody

thank goodness, they seem to have wormed their way onto a load of bills that have almost ruined my night with their musical bile and i wont be missing them

barfly schmarfly

Last time I saw Why? he was at The Pressure Point and it was wicked. Barfly can suck my balls.
