spot on Andrzej...
wavves fucked up and suddenly the entire world shifted a little to the left... Oh no, wait... it didn't. Of course it didn't... no one cares!! Or should that be, "no-one outside of the mainstream indie media cares"
I've already said that I hope they/he/whatever break-up and come back with something to say / talent / a tune / some decent kit / a stance on something / a stance on anything / cute, packageble lass up front to take my mind off the fact that nothing is going on / cute, packageble bloke up front to take my girlfriend's mind off the fact that nothing is going on while I'm off doing something else / a massively over-blown art concept / shades of decency / a fucking soul.
But I think I should add to that list.
We need rid of the Perez Hilton types... these influential bloggers, who's very (coked up) musings and the resulting fawning of major trident-aping websites, who shall remain nameless, are the makings and breakings of bands (or making of broken bands). As a subscriber to British sensibilities, I feel it's my right and geographically-give duty to affront the US-led neo-capitalist viewpoint where-ever I find it. This is a prime example.

...and you've spent the last 12 years in therapy?
not "therapy?" but "therapy"?
couldn't have said it better myself...
Great review. My copy has been on order at play.com since the day it was announced... I cannot wait but I will not join these thieves in downloading it.
...and I get to see them on saturday!!!
...in Crewe, which admittedly, isn't exactly the icing on the cake but I don't care.
yesyesohfuckingyes!!!
Was file-sharing ever 'killing music'?
Was it all media ignorance, broadened by laughable 'survey's, funded by a profligate industry reeling in terror? Could it really have been triggered by the kid from Modesto taking the £0.94 (at the time…) from the 'Artists' and 11 quid from 'the Man'?
I, for one, welcome our new digitised over-lords and I get the feeling if 'the man' had spent a little time looking rationally at the issue, rather than shitting bricks, then they would have raked it in. As it was, they drove it underground, DSL became common-place, bit-torrent happened and the rest, as they might say, is what’s happening right now…

hmm...
This is truly a well thought-out review. I'm not doing to go off on one here but, very quickly, here's my two cents:
You can most certainly review a band/artist that you are a 'fan' of, whatever that word means anymore. If you take this on however, you absolutely have to be even-handed. In this case, I think we're on the side of obsequiousness, which is a shame because the gent that wrote it is clearly a decent word-smith and someone in command of their generic knowledge, which is pretty important!!
I guess my point is that, from a neutral perspective ('cause I'd never heard of 'em and didn't/don't give a fuck), the record may well be worthy of a ten but because of negative phrasing used within it's confines, we, the people, will inevitably go "naaaaaaahhhh", or worse, "fuck you!!, I ain't buying it". Compare this downtreading to Sean's review of the Phoenix record, which generated the same score, and you'll hopefully see what I mean. I came outta that review positively salivating for the record, even though it doesn't remotely sit in my normal sphere of musicality (unlike Sunn0))))). I came out of this one, ambivalent about the band and unsure of the writer's neutrality.
It's not quite a maxim, because it doesn't apply all the time but it's my estimation that a well-crafted review shouldn't let the pre-judged opinion of the author shine on through; the music and account of it there-in should be enough to carry it.
Fair point?
if it's even HALF as good
as it's made to sound, then I guess we might as well all give up!!
Excellent review by the way and I will certainly be play.com'ing it up on payday...
Defeated by the Unfamiliar...
I am trapped...
I know this is a good record. I know I should be listening to it. I am just stuck behind my indie-boy wall of metallic hate... I can almost feel myself typing “but she’s had no input into any of this... She’s a front... A lyric processing unit...”
Which may well be true BUT what’s wrong with that?! If the beats are good, and they seem to be, then can’t I just take it “as is”? Sit back, relax and enjoy it!
No I can’t... Truly, there’s beauty here and I don’t debate that but it will take a stronger mind than mine, or some hundred thousand morons, to see it.
@lukowski
You mean 'neutral reviewer'? I guess such a thing cannot be hoped for, as anyone will have certain pre-dispositions about any media text they absorb. We are all different and have our own unique 'takes' on life, don't we ('cept all y'all JF fans - sorry, had to get a jibe in somewhere - that's one of the rules of posting to this site, right)?!
All I really want is to be fooled into thinking that the artist/record was good enough to warrant such praise, even if the reviewer had already written most of it before ever hearing the tracks. I don't mind if that was the case - time is money, after all - but don't let me know...
Meh, I've said my piece now. What anger I felt has faded and I'm left with the shameful feeling that I've wasted such joyous hate and bile on a record I don't actually care about and a review that was actually pretty well versed...
skin-on-skin
Long-time reader, first time poster... For the record, I'm afraid P.Wolf falls into the 'too much stage-show, not enough easily-quantifiable substance' category for me... some people will love him for this, I am not one of them but I had reached this decision before reading this review... On that note, can I make a request? Can, for once, we get a neutral reviewer please?
Don't get me wrong; that which is written above forms very eloquent piece and makes a good argument but reads like a pre-drawn textual orgasm... One can almost hear the sound of skin-on-skin as one follows the text along. Clearly the feelings drawn on by this self-abuse were too much for the writer to handle whilst trying to write a review and therefore we, the tired readership, are left without a clue about the actual music which forms this Artist's latest release. Let's be clear... I want to know about the record, not about how much you love/adore/self-flagellate at the thought of/were personally inspired by the artist.
Gosh, all that sounds really harsh and will probably generate some kind of backlash (or, worse, no response at all) but I'm going to post it anyway...
Cheers

we're an evolution of that which we follow. Thus, I do not think the same way as my US buddies and I exist in neo-capitalism... comprendes?
