after two listens the jury is still out for me too. What seems definite is that the songs are not as strong as on Playing the Angel, which I absolutely love, and the back to the 80s sound takes some getting used to after the dirty goth rock direction they were on before. And in some cases they are definitely polishing turds with production trickery.
Odd, that as main writer Gore always chooses the worst of his songs for himself to sing, last time Macro and Damaged People, which were embarrassing, this time Jezebel. And the rumoured next single Peace is absolutely terrible.

This would also be my second favourite Suede album. I'm not even sure if I'd say it's not as good as Dog Man Star, which is my all-time favourite album, and therefore obviously greater than anything else in that contest. In any case, Coming Up is so obviously different from the predecessors, maybe it should not be even compared to them (and the whole Butler v Oakes debate is obviously pointless and tiresome).
