fair point

i just wanted to bring up the blog more than anything. perhaps should have taken the question somewhere else. take on bored bert.

like i said...

...it looks very nice round here. like going from a 90s town house to a pad of steel and glass, smegg fridges and armitage shanks bogs.

beautiful!

the jimmy eat world lyrics nearly brought a tear to my eye. are their words really that bad? eck!

what?

they quoted the dis piece?

they might have a point...

...sean. eek!

hopefully not...

...we wouldn't be doing our job very well would we?

fancy opening up the discussion? :o)

it's a news story...

...when did hugh edwards ever have a personality?

i know what you mean though.

must try harder, must try harder

cheeky b*****d!

a press release? you are having a giggle right? there's a difference between writing enthusiastically and writing to a commercial end.

my mate just said to say, "what do you do clean out the hospital toilets?"

all in good jest mind.

what?

what?

something doesn't have to be deep to be a masterpiece...

...look at 'whatever people say i am that is what i'm not' (abuse welcomed).

sure everything's relative but when you can't hear anything but toothrotting sweetness it rattles my pancreas, and i don't like my internal organs being fiddled with.

radiohead aren't too serious anyway. at least they are uplifting with it.

doh!

not byline, punchline. grrr myself.

i need to go away.

!!!

nobodies adding their byline!!!

...

unfortunately that show was only seen by the punters who mistook The Hoosiers collective open mouths for urinals.

were they not...

...converse classics?

When you type The Foals into last.fm you get with The Whip. Straight off the bat, these guys aren’t anywhere near that sort of talent. The Whip’s form of electro-indie is a million miles from Oxford’s finest minimalist guitar house. Instead these guys on stage are formulaic, repetitive and uninspired with an innovative streak that rivals the baked bean.

The Joiners has got an immense legacy for a venue that’s stuck on the backside of a pub. A legacy that’s been documented many times before by musos scratching their heads, looking round for something for an intro. For example:

‘Above the bar there’s posters advertisers long gone gig gems. Faded blue A4 photocopies announce Radiohead’s imminent arrival, green dog-eared adverts promote a Stone Roses first coming and formerly yellow, now dirty orange, pages invite you to come see the Manics pre-Edwards disappearance. All in the same font, all the same style, all from a musical era long gone.’

A band graces the stage tonight that doesn’t really deserve this venue’s pedigree. Yes they’ve worked for it I’m sure. In fact the lead singer is the former lead singer of Nylon Pylon, that arena slaying outfit from the early noughties.

It’s frustrating that this stuff is celebrated so much in certain circles. This is going-nowhere electronica. There’s a swagger to it but it’s even more forced and homo-repressed than Kasabian’s sheriff stride. The signature tune, ‘Trash’, a Suede rip off so blatant they may as well have Brett Anderson on stage, builds for ages without really progressing. To dance to this you either have to be coked up or sucking the lead singer’s man-piece.

Damning but just. There’s nothing worse than a band that’s trying it’s hardest but to ultimately no avail. The music is tired, old, dusty, pre-mp3 generation. There’s a lacklustre approach explicit in the band’s stances, like they’d rather be playing Pro Evo and eating biscuits. To be honest, so would I.

fairp...

...everyone's entitled to their opinion innit.

missing metronomy...

...not such a bad thing!!!

it was...

...an incredible gig. it really did start christmas. did think a brazilian dance outfit could replace slade, the pogues and cliff richards with a new breed of pop christmas carols.

"let's make love and listen to 'do they know it's christmas at all!'"

dean.

was earser really released last year?

shit the bed!

what a line-up!

i woulda died to have seen all these acts in one night! how did i not know about it?!

grrrr!

radiohead emi debate

i'm sure all they wanted was a little more artistic freedom to stretch there audio muscles even more.

they're not the types to turn round and say they want a bigger tourbus or an organic rider..although i'm sure they have one.

dean.

there's a typo too..

...'this is dead'? surely it should be 'this scene is dead'? ooops! my bad! mind you it's the subbers bad too :o) x

cheers!

not to make myself sound too much like a novice but the hip-hop genre is still one that i need to completely embrace. thursday night has definitely made it easier for me to do that though. thinking about getting tickets for a lethal bizzle show now! haha!

please, please, please!!!

stop your extremely harsh and hurtful comments dollygirl!

you're unbelievable!

have you never...

...got anything constructive to say? your posts are always aimed at nash. what's with that big chip on your shoulder?

fair enuf

is being mainstream really that much of a problem though. muse are mainstream yet i'm sure dis would still report them. led zep sell out the o2 arena in secs and dis will still cover them. the spice girls sell it out and probably not.

8/10 was fair

i had my doubts on covering this gig. i was worried that the album wouldn't translate well live but as each song was played it transpired that with a little more tempo or a proper stripping down, the set became much more than the tracklisting.

her voice is amazing and i truly believe she has the ability to reach out to loads people and make a connection, something i love about music.

should dis be covering mainstream music? is she really that mainstream? already? plus, i sent a list of gigs to the someone who shall remain nameless at dis *ahem* DIVER *ahem* and kate was picked out of them to review. clearly the consensus is she should be.

ahhhh!

i'm glad that the lil humble piece of writing struck a chord with you...shame about not getting a ticket though. was an amazing show.

innit...

they did yeah...

...i was gonna put in the review,"apparently unmissable but missed all the same".

i did stick my head round the corner of the support but wasn't impressed despite the hype and good words thrown about at the bar so i clapped my lips round the extortionate beer in the sitting area instead.

who actually rates good shoes?

you may as well have been in the sun

i know it's obvious way to start a review but the heat as so intense it had to be include. people were fainting after the first and more were dropping around during the bloc. insane!

Kylie cancels Glasto after breast cancer diagnosis

i reckon frank black should drop mr eavis a line a put his name forward.

if it's not the pixies i honestly can't think of anyone big enough to fill the slot. i mean snow patrol could but who really wants to see them again...lovely boys tho.

hmmmmm...a dilemma indeed.

Re: Death of the single, continued...

i agree...community is so important. i mean look at the cooper temple clause. they were peobably the first band in my experience to build a hardcore fanbase whether they knew they were doing it or not (see the roll call feature on early singles...i'm there...dean samways).

now bands like hope of the states are doing the same thing.

if a bands website has just one thing it needs to have a forum.

what? first McLusky now this!

browsing DiS has ruined my day indeed!

haha!

Mclusky split

it'd not right that a band with such a humbling past and down to earth vibe who strove on their own for so long without the machine should disband when such tripe is allowed to flourish at the top end of the popularity charts.

How does that work?

I've seen McLusky sooo many times and was hoping to continue that trend. Suporting Idlewild, in the littler tent at Reading and three or four times down my local around the time of 'Dallas'.

It's just not cricket

Hot Puppies - Green Eyeliner

Yey! Look at that...A good word said about Purr. Every adjective used to describe Purr should always be a good one.

Everyone in and around the Bath area needs to come - www.purr.org.uk

Re: Hell Is For Heroes - dropped?

That would be pretty amazing...a little off the cards but cool all the same. Didn't DiS big them up loads before the release of their debut album? So maybe it's not too impossible. Sean you think you got that kinda cash in the kitty?

Re: New DiS Night In SOUTHAMPTON! - 26/4/04

You at the Insititute as well the Moose? What dya study? What year you into? You said you were from Frome right? ... Som many questions ... Hehe!

Dean

Re: New DiS Night In SOUTHAMPTON! - 26/4/04

Ok then. Might have to set up a rival nite at The Joiners then ;o) I mite change my course to Journalism. I looked at the Institute in the past and after your recommendation of the course through Nat I might just have to bring Purr to Soton for you coast folk to enjoy. We've got Holly Golightly playing soon! Imagine that in Lennons! Any change of heart? I can give you a list...

Hehe!

Dean

Re: New DiS Night In SOUTHAMPTON! - 26/4/04

From October you say? Well if I get a place at the Institute I can bring all my band contacts down to help you out if you're ever in a pickle for booking bands. I'm always in Moles of a Thursday and have made many friends who play guitar...and some enemies...but we'll say nothing of that.

What dya think KP?

Is this Ryan of Komakino fame? Sorry bud I've seen the band so many times in Moles but don't know any of the band members' names.

Is the Koma playing either Portsmouth or Oxford,

New DiS Night In SOUTHAMPTON! - 26/4/04

Bath is a hell hole for decent indie nights. Purr is all we have! Now I'm not saying that's rubbish...I worship the place but we need more!

How easy is it to bring the lucrative DiS name to sunny Somerset and please all the indie kids with another nite of rock debauchery per week?

At the Drive-In: Anthology

I was told the other day that ATD-I approached The Moles Club, Bath to play on the Saturday before they were due to appear on the NME's cover first time. But the idiots in charge of the club didn't put them on!!! How near sighted can you be?! Well that's another big time band to add to list of rejections by Phil Andrews (i.e. including Franz Ferdinand). I tell ya, if I was in charge of that place...
