odd review

I think the album is a cracker, the cribs will never reinvent the wheel, but they write brilliant alternative pop songs. Johnny Marr has added to the sound but it's still firmly a cribs album. They were excellent at the Barfly sunday night.

Yes

These are probably the most interesting pieces that I have read on DiS for some time.

...

maybe he'd only borrowed it.

...

...i like the cover, a lot.

the review seems spot on from what i've heard of the album though.

echo echo

white lies sound a lot more echo and the bunnymen than joy division to me. i think it's alright, caught my attention whilst I was playing darts late last night anyway.

field day

what about field day?

C) The Verve

C) the verve

i still recommend the dirty backbeats though

dirty backbeats

I recommend my mates the dirty backbeats for a live treat. Not sure what stage they are on, maybe the musician stage? Never been, so i may be inventing a stage.

nottingham

I used to love selectadisc when i was a student and around that time they expanded it i think. To see it it downsize is a shame and closure would be tragic. Great record shop and always very friendly. They would always give you the heads up on up and coming bands worth seeing at the Social as well.

they were...

... really good when i saw the at Lounge on The Farm. Billed as an acoustice set, but in reality was a full band, just with re-jigged versions of songs, with i suppose more emphasis on the melodic aspects of the songs and less of the psychedelic elements. Two of new songs were really good as well.

1 post...

...have any involvement with these artists by any chance? Fair enough they took to the stage, but what unknown band would not take to the stage to play infront of a few thousand people?

it was...

...a shambles, I and a number of my friends bands played the event. Stage times were being altered, as were the stages bands were playing at the last minute. The security didnt have a clue what was going on an promoters and organisers could not be contacted. Big named acts were being replaced on the main stages by unknown bands. There were loads of fights and it was a complete mess.

The list of complaints could go on and on.

I feel sorry for the Aspinall Foundation and Port Lympne Zoo as apparently they had to step in and pay some of the bands because the promoters couldnt. Hopefully people realise it wasnt their fault.

the one and only?

I think that they are both classics in their own right. I think that the fact verve could write songs as well as strung out epics is one the reasons they were great.

I can't stand the 'university fresher' view of "i much prefer their earlier, less commercial efforts".

voice over

clearly good songwriters, but i just cant get over the voice, it makes me feel slightly ill.

lets not forgot...

...self proclaimed Kings of Medway The Long Weekend play on the Friday. Yes i am in the band...

i reckon...

lupen crook, upcdownc, the bee's,the coral, polar bear and the draytones are all worth a look on the sunday.

but saturday with billy childish, new york dolls, the mystery jets, art brut and los campesinos is enough for me.

getting on a bit

to be fair they're getting pretty old and they've made three great albums screamadelica, vanishing point and xtrmntr plus some great ep's nixie narco etc and some great single moments in cry myself blind, jailbird, a few off of riot city blues and the one before it. At times they have also been a phonomenal band, the xtrmntr tour and glastonbury 2003 spring to mind.

I'd love it if the new album was a corker but i certainly wont be too concerned if its not.

4 doors up

2 doors down has at least climbed up the charts slightly, by 4 places to 24. Maybe it will be one of those songs that manages to hang around the charts all summer.

The singles airplay doesn't seem to have done too much to the album sales, so maybe a bit of remarketing will get the album the attention it deserves.

...

Horrible voice and shit lyrics, they just write sub foo fighters guff. Their music is cliche ridden drivel. When I was 15 i thought they were shit and now I'm 25 I think they are possibly even shitter.

who's joking...

Admittedly the video is fairly tongue in cheek, but i don't think the song is a joke. Yes it's light hearted, but its clearly not just a piss take. 2 doors down is a great pop tune that happens uses 80's style production and does it very well.

In my eyes its a song about childhood infatuation, set to the sounds of the bands childhood.

2 doors down

If this isn't a massive hit then there is something seriously wrong with the record buying public. It should be a massive cross over hit as you can imagine it being played on daytime kmfm as much as xfm.

However, considering the album only charted at 50, even with all the great reviews, I wouldn't be surprised if the single underachieved as well.

pureessence

Hard to bear sounds quite a bit like puresessence. I'm not sure how i should feel about that.

...

Really good article. I like Jason Pierce even though he probably is a bit of a miserable arse.

oh dear

This review read a bit like a 6th former trying to sound 'right on', but ends up sounding a bit silly.

From what i've heard there are some decent tunes and lyrics, and a few duff ones.

tired

music for musicians. Its dull.

to be fair...

...it has been known for people's bodies to cure themselves of a number od diseases Hepatitis and HIV being 2 of the most notable ones. Could be true of keef.

/\

I meant to say that call the who, t-rex and thin lizzy 'suspect' is ridiculous. They just have a lot of idiot fans, thats all.

men at work

Just like their live shows in recent years, it sounds workmen-like. They did glam well on Life ob Other Planets, they did introspection well on Road to Rouen. They do both of these things very badly on this record.

...

Seen themn a few times in the last few years and they've been phenomenal. I'd kill to see Ocean Rain performed live, but i'll probably just buy a ticket.

its not

its not an april fool, i met the drummer a little while ago and he said they were splitting.

/\

Thats a terrible charting for them, especially with the amount of positive press that they have recieved. Wasn't going to buy the album yet, but might go and get it now just because I feel sorry for them.

I think maybe going ultra pop and having Laura Marling on the first single might have alienated some of the fans of the first album. Thoughts?

overdue

Cn't believe the delays are still going. Their last record was a complete flop wasn't it?

which side are you on boy

victimisation comes from both (or all) sides its just that one side is often more violent than the other. It all stems down to a lot of ignorance and a bit of teenage tribal mentality. The condemning and mocking of 'chav' culture (which is essentially class prejudice in my view)is as disgusting and ridiculous as people being called gay for having a beard or dying your hair black.

In many ways i find the so called 'informed' and their mocking of the 'chav' more disgraceful than the ignorant chants of 'gay!' at someone dressed in 'emo' clothing.

But violence can't be excused.

Live and let live brothers and si...

marion

always reminded me of a rubbish version of marion, and lets face it marion had 2/3 good tunes at a push.

might be wrong...

...my mate told me, but now he thinks he's getting confused with sellinge music festival.I'll try and find out. However as they are all local artists it wouldnt surprise me if they were playing.

...

...i think its gonna be mainly blues, alt country etc... all i know is that pete molinari, chris dollimore and i think maybe lupen crook is playing.

good (vanishing) point

I think people forget what a great album vanishing point is, probably my favourite primal scream album. Maybe it suffers from coming out in the sam year as ok computer and ladies and gentlemen etc...

I think its interesting to note the tone of those records. A lot of big, dark and expansive albums came out that year, almost like a response to the chirpyness of britpop. I think that 1997 kind of parallels 1968 in that sense.

pigs might fly

the first longpigs album is an absolute cracker.

uproar

I've got the second northern uproar album, its called 'yesterday, today, tomorrow' i think. They also released a third album when they reformed in 2007.

I've never heard of Franz Ferdinand are they produced by james dean bradfield?

for sale

they've lost the dad, dirched the prog, gone very pop (not a bad thing) and got a very fashionable, attractive young girl to sing on the comeback single. looks to me as if they realised that they needed to sell some records if they were ever to make another one.

...

...think the single is great, its like a bond tune. All very scott walker esque with big strings and drama. I kind of agree that its not an obvious single, but then i dont really think that number 1's is what this collaboration is about.

shame but...

it a shame the astoria will close, its one of my favourite venues but things change i suppose. just a ahame the attitude is lets replace it with a bigger venue. as we all know bigger is not usually better when it comes to gigs.

Get milk, poor milk, drink...

...he's rubbish. Horrible sickly voice and his head is so far up his own backside that he cant hear how fucking awful his music is.

because...

they went for the big time with their second album with a 'rock' sound tried to crack america and be the next U2 but failed miserably and ended up losing their british fanbase that always saw them as a new verve/stome roses type band i think.

i thought the earlt ep's showed promise, i liked the artwork and song titles. then the album came out and it was a bit rubbish (with a couple of good tunes).

iconoclasm

being iconic certainly means something, it doesnt always mean that its the best. Marilyn Monroe is an icon but that does not make her a better actress than Dudie Dench. Sid Viscious is an icon but he was not a more talented bassist than andy rourke of the smiths. I suppose it comes down to the image having some kind of cultural significance.

I think that all these album covers have a certain iconic nature, whether they are the most iconic or the best album covers ever is obviously very subjective.

Its just a fucking list, the point is so that people discuss it... which you all are.

last year

This was my favourite festival last year. Didnt boast the big names of other festivals but had a really good friendly atmosphere and ethos. Must have the best taste/price ratio of food at any festival as well. Also you could get a pint of pimms with a shot of gin in it for £3.50.

support slot

played with them a few months back, told me his name was john and we had a long chat. really nice bloke, really helpful to us as a band and a great live frontman. the whole band were really friendly and down to earth. he's a big mouth, but quite a funny one and a often a little bit tongue in cheek. alex turner and john cooper clarke are big fans and they are of much more cultural worth and artistic significance than most of you lot, who are just bitter wannabe journalists that cant handle the fact that they're not very talented.

the albums pretty good, but they are a much better live proposition.

blue boy

great songwriter

...

i remember playing with these lot at their breakthrough fandango gig at the dublin castle a few years back. everyone was telling us they were gonna be huge and to befriend them. we laughed and ignored the advice thinking they were criminally rubbish. all the way hope we drunkenly took the piss out of the lyrics of cash machine singing lines in our best richard archer voices. back then i couldnt believe that they would be big, now i can. the nation are unfortunately mugs.

garage

I dont see the problem people have we're the Horrors, to me they're just a garage band. Garage bands tend to be pretty repetitive and heavy on aesthetic, see: the buff medways, the romones, the prisoners, the monks etc... I think its just a bit of fun, and they have a few cracking tunes.
