The Reliables
Good band, wish they'd write/release stuff at a quicker rate though - ala The Beatles. I suppose it's all to do with commercialism, record companies can push records for longer these days, what with all the media and all. Doubt it's the band's fault. Yeah, took me a while to get into all the tracks but that E.P. is spot on.
Condecending* I am joking of course.
I only come on this site to piss people off, it's people like you that keep me coming back. Nice one man! No, sometimes I get bored in work and they aint blocked this site yet, I mean no harm. X I have discovered a lot of decent bands through this place and for that I am grateful. I'm going to stop being such an arsehole actually.
Don't like my condending tone aye, well fuck you!
Are you twelve?
I wasn't responding to you.
Calm down!!!!!!!!!
Tish and fipsy!
Is that Brasseye or The Day Today? I can't remember. Your future will definitely resemble my own when it comes to the libertines! *Touch wood*
What metal songs?!
If your moral grounding comes from songs then you are one disturbed individual! Perhaps we should ban disturbed individuals. Whats the difference between singing about how you hate a certain type of people and telling people that you do? We'll have to ban certain types of conversations aswell. This debate should really have been a non starter.
No they haven't!
They're just not playing together anymore, they never said that the band had disbanded - now then!
Ramblings of a broken mind
Free speech is free speech, end of discussion. Do you know what i mean though? If people are singing about how they don't like you then walk away and dont listen. It's simple, some people are arseholes and some are not. However, if we dont allow those who are arsholes to show us their arseholeness then how do we differentiate. That's a simple way of putting it ofcourse - still, does anyone get what i mean?
Yes it is!
Finally someone with sense. I agree with you 100% my friend. I get really wound up by people criticising the libertines. The music is so amazing it is disheartening to see that cool culture has become more important than recognising artistic merit with kids today. The libs were a well needed injection into British music and pop culture. I'm not saying they were saviours but they definitely had a positive effect. I feel sad for people who will always be blind to their music because they are not on the cool list anymore. Anyways, that comment has brightened my day and for that I am greatful.
Jaype
You are 18 for fecks sake, and therefore a kid. You must have been thirteen when the first album came out, it makes so much sense now. Feck, why do all little kids think they know everything. Perhaps once you get a little older you'll realise that you do not, then a little older again and perhaps then you'll realise that it doesn't matter, no-one gives a shit what you think anyway. 18! Fecking indie kid, you are one of the biggest morons on this site.
Hmm
Had you heard the album previously? I'm not kidding, the album is amazing, perhaps thats why I genuinely thought they were outstanding live. It makes me want to go to a wood cabin, perhaps on the outskirts of Moscow, to sit by an open fire and drink wine. Not many albums have that effect! Oooh, there would have to be snow too.
Idiot
You are one. When you're a little older perhaps you will realise that every single point you made there conveys inexperience and naiveity. Perhaps I have misunderstood you but are you suggesting no-one expresses any opinions anymore because they do not have the right? What does validate an opinion in your view? I am interested to find out. Also, if I was Chris Martin wants to bring a violation of the Geneva Convention to everyones attention are you saying that he shouldn't because...why again? Not that i like Coldplay, but when things have a good effect you have to realise that and accept them. Are you a better person than Chris Martin?
Wow, i just read your comment again. You really are a tool. Well, as far as first impressions go anyway.
Or is it?
One thing I've always wondered is...does the band get to decide if they want the best of released, or is it totally up to the record company? Seems like an obvious question I'm sure you've all asked yourselves before slagging off bands, which seems to be all people do on this site.
By the way, David, I am trying, I really am! What sort of reviewer comments on his own reviews?...hmmm.
I'm starting to grasp what type of people don't like the Libertines now. You have set my mind at ease.
Anyways, I mean no harm - feel free to be just as sarcarstic to me - though I am trying my best to give you as little ammo as possible.
David Schmavid
I do not think you understand me. I'm not trying to isolate politics from music. What I'm saying is that rather than trying to tell people what you think don't you think it is better to provoke thoughts that act as a catalyst to poltitcal action? I am proposing/pointing out an alternative relationship. For example, one of my songs may be about growing up and realising that looking to the future is no longer an option, and that you have to start acting on your plans right now. Don't get me wrong, I have written more explicit protest songs in the past. However, no-one would ever enquire about the lyrics, now people ask me what my songs are about because they have a general idea but are not perfectly sure. It is simply more effective to lead people rather than push people. I hope you do not think this is a load of crap as I may have to quit my job as a political assisstant. Oh and just to let you know 'credible art' must always separate itself from the social landscape from which it has emerged. If it is merely a reflection, what would be interesting about it? Something has to be obscure in order to be interesting. Also, I don't really know what you are talking about with the whole MTV thing, that doesn't really bare any relevance on what we are talking about, or at least what I am talking about. P.S. I am not having a go, I happen to like a good discussion, in whatever form it may present itself.
a fan
Fair play Mr Lewis, you have never failed to impress me. I've seen 7 of your shows now, spoken to you a few times, in end of the road festival last. No, tell a lie, it was the welsh club in cardiff. You guys were awesome, as was Proffessor Louie! Shame about the middle act! We tried getting that support slot - The New Tea Party but that pedro guy allready had it. Ah well, one day. New albums is well good, tell Jack I like his stuff too - though I'm yet to have a shadow party.
You all make me sad.
John is the singer in a band called Yeti - thats been pretty obvious to anyone with not trapped in a cave for a good while now.
Which cave you at? I'll send some help.

I hate how cool culture is ruining the rep. of bands. The Libs are an amazing band, truly unique. It was about time someone like them came along and look at you all. It's not even about opinion anymore. You can dislike their music but you can not deny that they have reenergised a dwindling british music culture. I dont mean shitty bands like the view or whatever, there are plenty of bands they have inspired that are still to come to fruition.
When will people realise that it is a good thing to accept when bands are good, even if litlle kids can tell aswell. The only 'cool' people are honest people in this world, thats why politicians are uncool. Kay? Kay.
OOOOh!
I am 35 year old house wife from Belfast, I don't think many people would consider me an indie kid, and definitely not young. If you dont like the Libertines and you are having a go at indie kids there is one thing you have to realise - you are fecking indie kid! Indie kids are all the same, no-one thinks they are one, then they say something that is so laughable to the rest of us because it makes it obvious! Fair play, there are some stupid arseholes in this world.
The libs are awesome - I'm an indie kid by the way.
Will DiS start getting some good reviewers by the way, some impartial ones, or ones that atleast have good taste and not that of a sceptically boring inept 70 year old!
Ramblings of a broken mind
As much as I agree with a few things that have been said here the rating deserves a couple of more points atleast, feck, the comic that comes with the album should bring it up to a grinning 8. I am, obviously, a massive jeff fan (I like Jeff Lewis and I’m 12’ tall), in fact - I'm going to see him tonight in Cardiff, but to me it's the musics instrumentation that stands out on this record, above anything else. I like the lyrics, they're ok, I just think that the music is so original that he may aswell have written his own lyrics, then it may have been his best album. The only beef I have, in fact, is with the lyrics. So many bands point out random things that are wrong with society, it always seems to be more of an identity statement rather than a call for action. Feck that Jeff, we know who you are buddy! Anyways, tis still one of the best albums released this year thus far.
Ramblings of a broken mind?
I used to try and write songs that hinted towards a political leaning but then I realised that politics is a disease and I didn't want to let it affect my music. I use music as an escape from politics these days. Don't get me wrong, I am still highly politically active, more so than I ever have been, it's just that I don't like to address politics in songs anymore. There are so many deeper and more substantial things to think about, sometimes it seems that protest songs allow those who find it difficult to conjure up originality to masquerade as the opposite. Now I write songs to inspire people to think for themselves, and evaluate their lives. There is no point doing what crass did anymore, music is perceived as so ineffective these days bands like crass would just reduce the credibility of the left. I am not saying we should give up, I am saying that simply writing a protest song will have little or no effect anymore. We need to think of new ideas. Try writing songs that provoke a range of thoughts or songs that get conversations started, that's where the power lies - rather than simply shouting out what you think is unfair and who you don't like.
Emily Moore!
What are you talking about? Did you actually see Midlake or did you just write that because you were scared that your bosses might find out you went to watch the rugby all weekend instead? They were amazing, the sound was out of this world, they were extremely tight and often improvised to bring that something special to the performance. They may have been a little introverted, but if you actually listen to their lyrics you may have expected that. WTF?!
The End
I will end you! Daniel Johnston has been a good friend man of mine for ten years. He is probably the most interesting and nicest person I have ever met, his music is so inspiring. I love it when people like you get angry because you don't understand the appeal. Awww, do you want us to write you a letter to tell you how cool you are? Perhaps then you might be able to appreciate the genius of Daniel.
Info-Assistance
Hello, Not that I don't love the new stuff, it's great music, using the technology that is available, as many artists have always done, but, does anyone know whether they play any of their back catalogue? I love the Gay Parade, and the early four track recordings you see, just love the contrast between that stuff and the new stuff. Anyways, if anyone does know I'd be very greatful if you let me know.
Many thanks,
Adam.

If you don't like him then why are you even reading all this, let alone posting a comment. I hate all you scenesters who think your opinions are worth a damn. I think there are so many things wrong with your comment that I don't know where to start, well maybe I do, but I just can't be bothered.

I know what you mean, but...
Isn't over production a type of bad production and a, therefore, more descriptive term to use? I don't know - I finish work in 40 minutes and am trying to distract my eyes from constantly looking at the clock. Do you know 'they' say that a watched pot never boils, do you reckon you could stop time by constantly looking at clocks?
