“Reissue! Repackage! Repackage!”

The first example I can remember of a piggybank raping reissue would be the My Vitriol album. They released every song they could as a single, then put all the b-sides, chaff and newer mixes on a second disc, thereby making the single purchases almost pointless.

The Morrissey album is worse though, especially when you consider there was a spesh edition that came out on the day of release; and that the b-sides for 'I have forgiven Jesus' aren't included in either. You can't get the b-sides in the states? Amazon isn't just a river in Brazil, Toto, and the record company could have made the release America only instead of making fans worldwide look down the back of the sofa for change.

And two live performances released *on the same day*?
He really is milking the comeback for every penny.

Class re-issues happen though ... Death to the pixies with the bonus live show. The re-issue of Grace with the extra disc was good. The Ryko versions of the Bowie albums were well worth it, too.

Re: Glasto tickets on sale for Sunday: Locals only

Rumoured? Ain't they announced the line up, guv'nor?

Juliette And The Licks - You're Speaking My Langua

Wonder if they throw in a PJ cover live ala Strange Days...

We cry indoors? The Tears do in-stores...

On an unrelated Beckhamesque note, Brett's hair looked like his Mum had cut it with a bowl on Jonathan Ross last night.

For fucks sake man, use some gel, some mousse, anything!

We cry indoors? The Tears do in-stores...

Nah. Old mates getting back together to play some tunes and make a bit of cold hard cash on the side. Nothing wrong with that, unless the record is poor. And even a record of 'Coming up' standards will be a comparative return to form.

Nice play on 'We laugh indoors' in the headline, btw...

Chart raider, space invader: Star Wars to challeng

To be honest, that trailer is far better than the two films that preceded it. In twenty odd seconds, it revitalised the inner SF nerd in me. Which can only be a bad thing.

Re: Towering beauty and titanic tremors: Mono tour

Imagine the volume and range of noises Bjork'd make...
They'd take your ears *clean off*.

Re: Selfish C*nt

> I guess you either get it or you don't.

Not so sure it's about 'getting it' in this instance. It's more about where your musical tastes lie, what you personally consider important in the music you like. I think a great song tends to outlive the memory of a great show, no matter how vital that show may seem in the moment. I like bands such as Spoon and The Stills for that reason (although both are as good live as on record). In comparison, they're the traditional vanilla ice cream to Selfish Cunt's brand new style Shit and Glass flavour. I just happen to prefer the taste of vanilla, that's all.

Re: No Surprises? Radiohead make the best album in

Yeah, that was a shocker. I'm just wondering what effect this will have on the sales of OK Computer. Extra couple of thousand this week, d'yer reckon?

Selfish C*nt

I've seen this lot, and (t)he(y) put on one hell of a show.
But they might just be missing one vital ingredient. Good songs.

ATD-I anthology finally sees the light of day

I thought it was 'Take up thy stethoscope and walk'.

You could tell the Mars Volta were on the way when they started covering Pink Floyd...

Students targeted by the RIAA over illegal filesha

Really, if the RIAA wants some sort of insurance against students downloading music, why doesn't it sue the universities that run the I2 networks?

Do they have just better lawyers, or have precedents already been set about use of networks to download?

Glastonbury 2005 - bands, bands, bands....

Elvis Costello, Interpol, Go! Team, Rufus Wainwright, Futureheads, Bright Eyes... Still a pretty tasty bill.

Was hoping for Ani DiFranco to be there though.

Re: The Tears - Refugees

It's good to know he's still sprightly in his old age.

The Tears - Refugees

Just heard this. It's a very good single, but then again, so was Electricity, and that preceded Head Music, so the jury is still out. Have to listen to 6 music on monday, hear the rest.

Frank Black to release new album, 'Honeycomb'

Steve Cropper. 'kin hell. Talk about the cream rising to the top. With players like that, the musicality will never be in question... but... is Frank Black a bit too prolific (sp?) for his own good?

The majority of the records listed above aren't classics, and I always find myself wondering about the level of quality control when skipping the duffers.

Am optimistic about this one though.

Wireless Festival - more names announced

Supergrass have a back catalogue/history, and are used to playing to big festival crowds. It is weird that Keane can headline above them (sales be damned!)
What will Keane do for their encore? An album medley?

Reading & Leeds Festival: Bands Announced

Sometimes, Sparrow, I think we are too old for this game...

This is a pretty underwhelming, uninspiring line up so far.

Re: DiS @ TMF: Wanna Play?

Ah. Just <i/>near Lakeside. Ho hum.

DiS @ TMF: Wanna Play?

Is this at Lakeside?

Madness

Wireless 2005: new festival comes to London

Watching a New Order that are a pale imitation of their former selves, a greatest hits set from Basement Jaxx, and Keane and Kasabian headlining after one record each.
Where do I sign up for this? Oh, there's a link...

Still, it might not suck. Depends what the weather and other stages are like. It'll be nice to be able to get to a festival with a travelcard too. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.

Get Up Kids get up and go. Forever

Looks like it. So far.

They were pretty good live, had one great record and did a nice Cure cover. Who could ask for more?

Tommy Vance dies

I'll miss him. He brought the Rock!

Reading tickets onsale now

With Mean Fiddler now playing their part in organizing the Glastonbury festival too (the ticket prices being near identical), are we not getting very close to seeing a monopoly going on involving the big festivals in England?

Just wondering...

Korn man heads off to find God

And it'd make a change from Satan.

Stay Together for the Kids? Blink 182 Split....

Does indefinite hiatus simply mean we're not ruling out reforming for the cash?

Hunter S Thompson commits suicide

It's a great book. His collected letters, Hells Angels, and The Rum Diaries are also brilliant.

He was a strange guy, but a great writer.

The Tears

The proof of the pudding will be in the album.
Suede were never as good live as they were on record, either.

WE BELIEVE IN MUSIC (or why it’s really, really im

In a super-sweet turn of events, I found a copy of this in a local charity shop today, for a pound. In mint condition. Fully signed. With bonus live dvd.

Counts, officially, as the best charity shop find ever.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Thank fuck. I thought it was this year.

WE BELIEVE IN MUSIC (or why it’s really, really im

While I appreciate the indie chestbeating of this piece, I'm finding it unlikely that it'll persuade more than two punters to shuffle down to HMV and hand over their £14.99.

Still, two fingers to the man, eh?

Re: Franz Ferdinand to top V Festival bill

You took the words right out of my mouth. In a non Meatloaf way.

Re: You talking to my bird? New Rhodes dumped from

If you want no talking at a gig, don't go to see The Vines.
The Brixton crowd was talking over them so much, I felt sorry for them.

Gn'R to release record this year. Ha. Ha. Ha.

This album may be the longest running joke I've ever heard.

Can't wait to hear the punchline.

UK mini-tour for Audioslave

Playing Glastonbury then?

SxSw 2005 line-up boasts hundreds of great bands!

Vanilla Ice is an interesting choice...

I'd go and see Ghost, and Scarling, and Sleater Kinney.

Take your hamper out: Scissor Sisters to headline

V is the worst festival I've been to. Its been going downhill since it started, and desperately needs a bit more variety in its bills.

On the upside, the toilets are comparitively clean.

Foo Fighters to headline Reading & Leeds Festivals

It's the ten year anniversary for the Foos first Reading set.
They were incredible then. I hate to say it, but they've got less interesting each subsequent time I've seen them.

Pixies and The Maiden though. Oooh. Lovely.

Red-top rumour no. 123,327: Kylie to play Glasto

This rumour has been a cert since last year, so shame on the tabloid that printed it.

Still, it could be worse. It could be Macca again.

Manic Street Preachers tour

Are they downsizing their audience then?

Bright Eyes - Digital Ash In A Digital Urn

To be fair to those people who have reviewed this record as something akin to a side project, its quite hard to look back at the bulk of Bright Eyes material up until now and not see a pretty big departure from the stuff of old.

I've been listening to this album pretty solidly for the last few days, and I can't help but see this as the weaker of the two. Comparing it to I'm wide awake its morning is unfair because its very much like he's moving to a new style after perfecting another. The new direction isn't a failure, but suffers due to the strength of the other record.

However, I think if he'd released this record on its own, it might have got a worse reception. With the one 'traditional' album being so good, it would seem churlish to hammer the other for being different from past material. I think it softened a potential critical blow.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Things I thought about this record on a couple of listens...

1) 'Poison Oak' was the best track. A real tearjerker.

2) Early on it felt like a Home E.P with the guy from My Morning Jacket, and I think that mix of guitar sounds and vocals worked really well. Shows he knows who to work with at the right time.

3) 'Landlocked blues' was formerly 'One foot in front of the other' on the Saddle Creek sampler,
and I think the original edges the Emmylou version.
Her harmony vocals are excellent throughout, however.

4) This record is the equal of Fevers and Mirrors, and deserves all the credit it gets.

5) Will have to get a copy of Digital Ash now. Damn!

Low - The Great Destroyer

Nice work. It is an awe-inspiring record.
I'd like to see Monkey as the next single. That'd be class.

Where In The World Is Crispian Mills?

Were they all wearing armbands and looking sinister?
Whispering conspiratorially in German between bites of bratwurst?

Re: Where In The World Is Crispian Mills?

After a bit of a search a couple of months ago, it seems there was a bit more news of Jaime Harding.

In 2001 he began working with a guitarist called Wayne Ward, and recorded a set of songs for an e.p that was to be called 'Sister', and released under the name Marion. This never happened, but if you look hard enough on the internet, you can find the songs. On the whole, they aren't worth the effort, but for a die hard or completist I suppose they are.

At the end of 2003 he did a live guest spot with a former bandmates band (of which I've expertly forgotten the name), and was looking in pretty good shape according to bystanders. Not a gnome in sight.
