You’re in Nation: What Not to Watch 2005

This is good stuff. Plenty of spite. That said, the Secret Machines album does have a couple of good songs on it, dispite sounding like an overproduced Pink Floyd in parts.

Btw, were Towers of London formerly known as The Turrets,
or is my aged memory playing tricks on me?

XFM's four day music rout: Dogs Die, Holiday Plan,

Funny to see Haven slip down the bill. Their star seems to have faded pretty quick

God Loves Records, so say Big Scary Monsters

Tapes are great. I'll defend them until my last breath.

RTX play debut UK shows next month

Royal Trux were always a bit hit and miss though, eh?

Mars Volta add to final Frusciante solo release

I like that James Iha record. It's a bit sappy, but the songs are good.

The best 25 British songs of the last 25 years: ea

I'm betting that the winner of this vote will get a nice little sticker added to their greatest hits cd.

'Featuring the best British single EVER!' It'll boost sales, fer sure.

There's no Cure in there either, so fuck em.

Re: Tip for 2005: Jeniferever bring their beautiful Swedish epicness hither

There are no tickets sales as such, but you'll definitely be able to get in if you make it down. Tickets are a mere 3-50 (!), and the Search are there like the other dates.

Re: Mars Volta fans: "What you're doing is f*cked"

>Why are GSL bothered about kids downloading the album; surely it's a Universal Music release...

Their publishing money?

Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

(wipes a tear from eye). Thank you.

Cheery news: Brian Wilson to take Smile to Glasto

Status Quo are playing Glastonbury next year. They'll be ace!

Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

True. They were one of Britain's best bands from the nineties, and *shamefully*, there's no profile for them on here.
I mean, even Gay fucking Dad have a profile.

C'mon DiS. Grant my Christmas wish.

Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Here here! Glad to see the Stills record do well, though.

Re: Go! Team get going

Probably.

Really like this lot. Its a cracking album, especially for housework :]

Union Chapel to close for gigs

There's an e-mail address listed on their website (it is feedback@unionchapel.org.uk) if you'd like to say something about the closure. Which might be worth a few minutes typing.

Union Chapel to close for gigs

It's a real shame. The sound in there was spot always on, and the venue really suited some bands (Low and Damien Rice particularly).

Might have a look and see if anyone good is on before it shuts.

Secret Machines - Sad and Lonely

Any tasty b-sides on it?

Pantera guitarist shot dead

"It is believed that members of the crowd thought that the gun-man was part of the act, and therefore action was delayed."

There's some razor sharp thinking for you.

He was a great guitarist though. RIP.

Re: Razorlight go super-size.

They've only just begun. They're going to be around FOREVER...

Elliott Smith: Not One But Two Albums.

What were the tracks that didn't make the cut for the single disc version. Were they ever named anywhere?

Mars Volta to release one-track album

Wasn't the last album a one track album too?

Re: The Dears announce UK tour

They do sound a bit like Blur, eh?
I detect faint traces of Gene, also...

Re: Six By Seven - Catch The Rain

To be fair, when they started playing live as a three piece there was a lot of empty space on stage and they didn't really seem to be able to compensate.

They've improved a lot as a three piece since, and are back to their best live, if not so much in the studio.

Re: So, What's the ..... of the year?

>misc: Tennesee Fried Chicken, Camden Town

That's beautiful, man. Beautiful.

So, What's the ..... of the year?

Best record so far- You are the Quarry (deluxxe edition)

Finally a decent Morrissey record.
Come back toCamden must rate as one of the finest misery tunes ever.
Edges Explosions in the sky by a whisker, despite crap cover presentation.

Best single so far- The Rat by The Walkman
Pisses on all others, and is dancefloor dynamite.

Best festival - Glastonbury.
Makes other festivals seem very weak, year in year out.
May have lost a bit of the hippie spirit but generally full of things to see and do which beats waiting for the next band to come on, the only other option at Reading & V.

Best gig - Stills/Walkmen at the Garage, although Conor Oberst at ULU came close.
Best double header of the year by a country mile.

Best new band - The Stills, if they still count as new.
The next album will make or break them, but this one
had a legion of aural delights, and they put on a fine show.

Best DJ - John Peel.

Best label - The 'indie' 679 has the best lineup, but Matador still has the best records.
Best British label is still Seriously Groovy.

Worst band - Razorshite. Did a very bad cover of 'Boys don't cry' at Icon. A heresy!

Best websites - This one, pitchforkmedia, tinymixtapes
(which I was turned on to by this list).

Magazine I feel cheated by every time I buy it - NME.
Minimum of 3 pages of adverts to every page of reviews.
New years resolution is to stop buying the poxy rag.

Re: No more tears for ex-Suede boys

Maybe they'll have to be The London Tears. Hehehe.

The last two Suede records were workman-like but limp, and Butler's solo stuff was pretty weak too. I'll cross my fingers and hope for a return to form, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking that once you lose the spark, you never get it back.

Re: Idlewild complete album #4 - acoustic shows se

Because they're a fine live band, and always have been.

Funny about having to wait until March for the album though. Seems a long time to wait...

Nirvana: Box Set Specifications, Tracklist and UK Release Date

Blandest is a great little outtake, and the other stuff looks pretty interesting (God knows what their version of Seasons in the sun is like), but overall I doubt the set will be worth forty notes.

Wouldn't mind it for Christmas though.

DiS Takes on London - November '04

The Paperbacks
My First Knife Fight
The Hitchers

at The Windmill, Brixton, this Thursday.
£3 to get in, and well worth it.

The Telescopes - Winter EP

Hard to believe they could top the original of Perfect Needle, but I shall seek this version out.

By the way, since when did 2 tracks make an up an ep?

Musical hero John Peel dies age 65

He was the best dj I ever heard, and my hero.
I'm going to miss him very much.

Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

'Don't make fun of Daddy's voice' is a glam Moz stomp,
and it's cracking.
Some b-sides off this record have been brilliant.
'The never played symphonies' and 'Mexico' are worth having.

Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere

'You are chains' is a great tune.

Q Awards: winners

Good to see Q pushing the envelope.
No safe choices there then...

Donnie Darko: OST to be released - win stuff...

That actress reminded me of the girl on the cover of 'Girlfriend in a coma'

Re: Manson to host The Cure tribute show

And corporate stooge that I am, I also noticed that there is another competion to win after logging into Hotmail today.

Christ, that was good! Let's make a record!

"I wonder, I wonder, have you tried, have you tried
JEEEEEEESUS? Sweet-A, sweet-A JEEEEEEEEESUS!"

The Mighty Hannibal was great. Mighty, even.

Manson to host The Cure tribute show

It's a competition thing for tickets (so far...)

Re: Pixies: new album due in 2005

New Pixies record in the offing?
Tom Waits producing it, maybe?

That's made my day, cash in or no.

The Cure - what would you ask them?

Did this interview not happen then?

Just wondering...

London venue news: Water Rats folks to open new Marquee

>What would your perfect venue be like?

Small. Smoke free. Low lighting. Cheap vodka.
Bands. PA that doesn't deafen the punters.
Room with a pool table upstairs. Tasty jukebox.

A boy can dream...

My Vitriol: Return in '04 (Still Signed to East West!)

Any news on this record, or are we having another Elastica/Stone Roses style problem?

Its alright, MV. No rush....

Re: Tom Waits: Autumn LP

Yeah, they could have had mumbling old geezer competitions...

Nighthawks at the diner
Blue Valentines
Mule Variations
Rain Dogs

Don't think I could place them in any real order.
All great.

Re: 6x7 join Eden Sessions

I haven't heard the latest single, but I saw em at Glastonbury and they were as good as I'd ever seen them (despite the keyboard player getting gassed on a regular basis by the smoke machine).
I still have hopes they'll deliver another record as good as 'The Closer You Get'. Wait and see, eh?

Re: Ash - Orpheus

Does the intro to this song remind anyone of 'Powertrip' by Monster Magnet?

Re: The Walkmen - Bows And Arrows

I dunno. I can hear it a little bit on 'The Rat'.
Rest of the album is not very similar though.

The Minotaur takes a cigarette break

I just read this last week. Interesting use of mythological figures to give character insight and to forward the plot (Hermaphroditos running a late night phone line highlights M's loneliness, the Medusa showing in a freakshow sets up the conclusion), and in general a good page turner. If you wanted to criticise it you could say that the language is overly ornate in places, and the poems don't really add to the general flow of the book.
That really would be being picky though.
Its a good debut and a worthwhile read.

Re: Good Charlotte: This Year's Daphne & Celeste

I imagine they feel bruised and upset.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Re: Good Charlotte: This Year's Daphne & Celeste

OH, HAPPY FUCKING DAY!

I'm so happy to hear this news I'm grinning from ear to ear.

Fan-fucking-tastic.
