Cool,

Think I might be in the London office on Thurs so could possibly see two free Health shows in a week. They are playing a free show in the middle of a park in Paris tmw as well.

They were also brilliant at Primavera last weekend

A definite return to form,

I found LofFW somewhat underwhelming. The SSK is at this moment my favourite album of the year thus far. I will definitely be purchasing a 'proper' copy

Psychic TV

played there there a few years ago were very bizarre

No Age

are playing the Pitchfork one I think

Quick theory,

about the success of 'In Rainbows'in the above review.

Given the way the record was released, it is potentially the 'DiS voters' most highly / owned listened to release of 2007.

Given the above statement the format of the poll probably helped as well. Pick 5 releases out of 50, each vote having equal rating. I would imagine that In Rainbows picked up a lot of votes when voters had one of two remaining votes left and did not want to waste them.

It will be interesting to see where it is placed in John M's DiS message boards poll, where the votes are weighted

N.B. this post completely ignores the musical merit of the release, I am unable to commment on this as I have not listened to the album.

^

Primavera > Benicassim

Are this lot

worth checking out? as they are playing in Paris on Sat and am considering going?

Also 3 French dates announced

January 16 - Clermont Ferrand - La Cooperative de Mai
January 18 - Strasbourg - La Laiterie
January 19 - Lille - Aeronef

Oops

Pretty good list that:

Would have added:

Trembling Blue Stars: The Last Holy Writer (don't think it was reviewed)

Low: Drums & Guns

Grinderman: Grinderman

2007 has been a very good year for albums, apart from the UK, which has been a tad lacklustre

Just ordered this,

solely on the strength of the review

Well written,

a pleasant surprise

^'tis a good'un

Would also heartily recommend Simon Reynolds - Bring the Noise, just finished this one. Also the edited by another MM journo Chris Roberts: Idle Worship. Finally, does anyone remember a small paperback book that was cover-mounted on a mid 90s issue of MM entitles 'Unknown Pleasures' and contained an essay my each journo on a record that had fallen off the radar. Things like Allan Jones on Neil Young's Time Fades Away, Paul Lester on Chic, Everett True on The Residents, also articles by Simon Reynolds, Simon Price, Andrew Mueller, David Stubbs,Jennifer Nine, Chris Roberts etc. This little book got me into so much new music, Captain Beefheart, Gene Clark, The Go-Betweens to name a few

A few comments

- Reiterating what a few people above have said, for music fans, for the last few years, Europe has been the way forward. Just in terms of pricing, organisation, sound quality, and atmosphere, they are head and shoulders above the UK at the moment. It's probably easier to travel from most parts of England to a fair number of the continental festivals than Glastonbury

Hope

they are the support for the Paris Battles show

RIP

Agree

with the above statement, apart from the mention of the pigeon detectives (one of the worst live bands I have ever seen).

Am looking forward to this, it was my favourite outdoor UK festival last year

As I managed to fall asleep

during this particular set. I better download this to see what I missed

Quite possibly

the weakest list yet, Bat for Lashes, The View, Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal's incredibly weak effort

However, thinking about it, in the last year most of my favourite releases have come from outside the UK

Isn't there

supposed to be a couple of million quids worth of gravel underneath the site. I'm sure I read something about this, last time the site was up for sale

Bought this

a few weeks ago to atone for missing them at Primavera and it's growing on me with every listen. Just one point, I thought they were from Portland, Oregon, but I could be wrong. Good review nethertheless

Agreed

Worst band i've seen so far this year by a long long way

Favourite newbies of the last couple of weeks

Von Sudafed
Battles
Panda Bear
Twilight Sad
Low
Maps
Chavez (comp)
Trembling Blue Stars
Bill Callahan

Was quite impressed

by her live performance, when she supported Midlake recently. Was just voice and strings. She has a lovely pure sounding voice. Will definately check out this release

Will make sure

I check them out at the Bataclan show then

Dreadful, dreadful band

Worst live act i've seen this year by a long way

Very good review

Have only listened to the album twice so far, but hope i'll still be loving it at the year

Saw them last night

supporting Interpol. Thought they were going to be annoying and that I was going to hate them, but was pleasantly surprised. They were good fun

They came up with the goods tonight

Plus points

A full length set
The new songs sound pretty darn good
As far as oldies: Little Sister and Burn the Witch as mention above, but also:
- The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret
- Feel Good Hit of the Summer
- Go with the flow (biggest crowd reaction)
- The one that goes 'they keep on playing our favourite songs...'
- A couple of others whose names i've forgotten

Couple of minor niggles

Sound was a bit muddy at times. Normally very good sound in the venue they were playing
The crowd did exhibit a bit of a pong. (In general Parisienne(correct spelling?) audience are never in my (limited) experience malodourous)
Finally, no support act, just a DJ on stage playing the sort of songs that used to play in indie clubs in the 90's during the 'metal bit.'

Agreed

It will be interesting

to see what sort of set they play tmw night. They're playing a 1000ish capacity venue. The show tomorrow was originally scheduled to be the warm-up for the Wireless thing in June. Will report back

Agreed,

saw her play in Paris last night at a tiny little venue. She had great charisma and the tunes to match

I always thought

it was brewed in Bedford

Good review.

Saw them last night. Good crowd, loud clear sound and a lot of fun. Support act rubbish again

same for

me when they supported The Earlies in Paris a few weeks ago

Bloody Hell,

Sister Ray has moved into the Selectadisc building. I used to love spending Saturdays visiting Selectadisc and M&V Exchange on Berwick Street, but generally avoiding Sister Ray

She's got

a nice turn of phrase. Scissors in my pocket is an underrated gem. Along with Gemma Hayes: The Roads Don't Love You

Did not like

the second album at all when it was released, but am quite fond of it now. Live show is a good axample of the law of diminishing returns. But always somewhat enjoyable

Saw the Paris show

a couple of weeks ago. Gig of the year so far. Like Richmond Fontaine being shot in the arse with a hypodermic full of the elixir of E-Street
