This is irrelevant though
If Metallica denied they were metal, would it be true?
Brendan Benson is definitely powerpop
although like a number of other mordern powerpop artists he doesn't just work within the traditionally strict confines of the genre. Jimmy Eat World on the other hand are emo, so I'm not sure why they got a mention.
I like the intro to this review but definitely disagree with the critique and score. The songs on MO,FF are immaculately crafted and catchy as hell as all good powerpop should be. His lyrics can be a bit clunky at times but I think this gives his songs a certain charm. 5/10 totally under-represents BB's talent as a songwriter imo. As mentioned above, good pop songs are ludicrously hard to write but MO,FF contains plenty of them. I would urge anyone who's a fan of guitar pop not to be put off by this review.

You Aint Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman-Turner Overdrive!
Excellent piece
Was a bit worried at the start though, thought we might have another 'He' on our hands!
I first read Swells within the pages of NME and as a teenager looked forward to his reviews which were always hilariously vitriolic or full of OTT praise. He was also a big Wildhearts fan and his support for them made my Britrock obsession at the height of Britpop feel a bit more justified. He also used the phrase 'rum bugger' in a review once which cracked me up. RIP Swells, you rum bugger.
"thick tranny gobshite"
Nice to see bigotry is alive and well on DiS. Idiot.
Splendid scenes!
get well soon Chi Cheng!
The Bronx
gives me hope that we might not be condemned to a future of boring indie shiteness
Simon and Garfunkel
or Teagan and Sara!
Excellent reading
Amazing to hear how this record was made, especially considering it was pretty much entirely an analogue creation. The level of thought and creativity put into Six puts most other bands to shame!
For the new
Mystery Jets - 2 Doors Down
Weezer - Greatest man who ever lived
and 5 Years Time by Noah and Whale becuase that track has been virtually inescapable!
For the old:
Jellyfish - The Ghost At Number 1
The Rubinoos - Hurts Too Much
Brendan Benson - Sittin' Pretty
Pretty cheesy
much like 90% of The Red Album unfortunately
Please lord let it be
a) The past is a grotesque animal.
Supercool guy
by all accounts and a massively worthy cause. Lovely stuff!
Torche are class
definitely gonna get this. Floor were fucking great too!
Is it
for my love of GnR or my use of the word 'kewl'? Either way I remain stoically unaffected.
I would!
It's Oh My God from the End of Days soundtrack and it is kewl.
Hopefully
Brendan Benson will channel any profits he gets from this into making another album like La Palco. That was the tits, Raconteurs notsomuch.
JEW!
How much say did you have in the production on Futures and Chase This Light? Was it intentional to give the songs a glossy pop sheen?
How did the colossal ending to Goodbye Sky Harbor come about?
Nice!
The gf got me a ticket for the Hoxton show for Christmas. Should be amazing and hopefully not as insanely hot as their Barden's Boudoir show a while back.
Nice One
Hidden World was killer! I can imagine them confusing the Gallows crowd a fair bit...
Scott Walker?
Pre or post Tilt I wonder... Plus, Alex Turner crooning in a Northern accent would be hilarious!
Jeez
Thanks for the fashion review NME, since when did DiS get so caught up on what a band looks like... For me FoW's dysfunctional geekiness is a big part of their 'everyman appeal'. And seeing as Traffic and Weather is made up of purely character driven songs about everyday folk in America, it's quite fitting that they dress the way they do.
Shame this gig wasn't all that though, they were ace at the London show earlier in the year.
Cooool!
Matthew Caws makes me want to blub his voice is so good!
Awesome to see
someone obsessing over their favourite band, and SFA are def worthy of the praise! Not so sure myself they surpass The Beatles and The Beach Boys best work but undoubtedly more consistent than The Beach Boys (anyone heard the 80's output? Argh!). On the whole: lovely stuff!
I hope this review is wrong
because I really loved In Case We Die and thought musically it was beyond most of the releases from that year.
Anyone know if any of these shows
are gonna be performed with an orchestra like they've been doing in the states? Surely Royal Festival Hall would be the perfect venue for it...
In Case We Die
was figgin' awesome! Heard the new single on the radio the other day and it didn't sound like a huge departure from the last album, reckon AIC's songs take a few listens to get into though...
Hot damn!
Wasn't expecting that! I hope it has less better lyrics than Make Believe. And no 'here's your lead single' type Beverly Hills song...
Tough to order
Them but here's a top 9
Battles - Mirrored
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Fucked Up - Hidden World
Loney, Dear - Loney, Noir
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Deerhoof - Friend Oppurtunity
Paul Steel - April & I
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, are you the destroyer
and...
...Fountains of Wayne - Traffic and Weather!
This reeks...
of Sandi Thom style industry shenannigans.
Personally,
I think it's fine and dandy for and up and coming bands to allow their songs to be used, let them make their money. However I'd be annoyed if I was a fan of that band or song and had to hear it in every ad break, every day for 9 months or so. For example I used to quite liked that Devendra Banhart one, now I think it's fucking arse.
That's cool
Obviously I don't know the ins and outs but maybe it was just a misunderstanding? The diplomat in me wants to patch things up between your respective bands cos I love peace and harmony like Mr Ghandi.
I'm pretty relaxed
I just wanted to defend a band I think are great and from what I've heard are actually quite lovely. I was also hoping to draw attention back to the music and away from any between band dispute cos this singles ace!
I Love SS
they've got some great little pop songs and played a blinder when I saw them supporting IAMX at The Scala. Reckon the unnecessary bitchiness above can be roundly ignored and maybe even scoffed at a little. Harumph
