Re: Her Space Holiday man bitten by spider

<3 HSH.

The Young Machines is a great album, bar that one track where he attacks journos. That one sucks.

Go get it!

Dave Grohl: "One of the biggest jerks..."

Dave Grohl: a big jerk? Shurely shome mishtake.

Who was in the band, Courtney?

Re: Sigur Rós

Which one is Untitled 8? I didn't know they'd actually christened the stuff from (). I can remember seeing them and it being a truly unforgettable experience - that crushingly heavy bit at the end of Untitled 8, the drummer pounding away on cymbals and Jonsi doing the crazy wail. Oh man.

Can't wait to hear the new record.

Re: Milburn

My god. This is utter, utter shite and don't be fooled.

The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Nam

They were SO very boring live. But I guess I'm the only person that hates them.

Minotaur Shock - Minotaur Shock - Maritime

*kills you for uttering that word, you know the one, it begins with "folk" and has "tronica" in it*

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record

I was referring the slightly heavy-handed lyrical content.

I'd hope Fierce Panda would do the re-release, otherwise, you used to be able to pick up the older records from Barsuk's website for about $8 each plus shipping, which is pretty cheap. You can pick up the All Time Quarterback one as well, which isn't essential but interesting.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

Maybe I was being a bit harsh, but in places it makes me tear my hair out. The "epic" title track is filler - I appreciate they can't keep doing chiming guitars forever, but this attempt at progression just makes me want to grab Gibbard round the throat and go "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, BOY?"

Having said that, there are some classic DCFC songs on there - A Lack Of Color is particularly pretty, Expo '86 is cute in the way it cycles back to the start, and Tiny Vessels is emo++ but a guilty pleasure. As a whole, it's not a patch on something like Scientist Studies, or No Joy In Mudville, or Wait (even though I know that's a Secret Stars cover).

A lot of people got into DCFC via Transatlanticism, and for that I applaud it. I have faith that their next record will improve.

Re: Death Cab: retrospective reissues, new record in pipeline...

The new stuff does suck quite royally. Transatlanticism is the sound of Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla finally getting their fat paycheck. Fair play to them; after all, they've been at it for years.

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes, however, is far superior to anything they've produced since. Lyrically, it's much stronger than Transatlancism, Chris Walla's guitar playing has never been better, and it has this wonderfully melancholic mood to it.

Re: Wish You Were Here? Pink Floyd reform for Live

Awesome!

Perhaps Waters and Gilmour have finally made up. Or perhaps they'll be separated on stage by a forty feet tall screen so they can't see each other at any point.

Screaming Tarts release compilation record

Joanovark? For a second I thought that said Joan Of Arc, and I was about to get all excited and stuff. Bah.

Re: Lounging Around With AC30

What sort of sets were you looking for? I'd be interested.

Caribou - The Milk Of Human Kindness

Really, really good.

Re: Spoon - Gimme Fiction

Yeah, they're so minimal yet the songs are scarily catchy. I absolutely love "Don't Let It Get You Down" and "Vittorio E" from Kill The Moonlight. Still not sure about the new one, every Spoon record always takes me a bit to love it.

Re: Cool indie band Linkin Park take on the man

I agree with you, I think.

Also, that was a very informative and entertaining read. I thought Courtney Love was a strungout junkie, not a voice of reason.

Re: Billy Corgan - officially friendless

Debacle?

They were just the pumpkins but happy!

Re: Four Tet: up all night, twice!

They're the Don Cab guitarist (Ian Williams) and Tyondai Braxton from On!Air!Library! They've released a few eps, EP B, EP C, and Tras..

It's kinda good. That gig is going to be great, mind.

Re: Prefuse 73 - Surrounded By Silence

I think it's a little more progressive (if we're using One Word.. as the starting point) than you make out. The Blonde Redhead in particular stands out, with those beautiful drums. The Books track as well. Okay, maybe not.

It's a shame he rehashed some of the beats from One Word.. you often hear the same glitchy beat on several different tracks, but its still a really enjoyable album. Aesop Rock's track makes me laugh out loud every time, that skit in the middle is great. It feels a lot more "hiphop" than One Word, mainly cos a whole load of tracks have proper vocals. Oh well.

I lost the point somewhere in this post. I think it was that it's still worth a listen.

Redjetson

APOF are great. I don't know if it was just me, but the frontman came across as a very cocky git. I'm sure he's a really nice person in real life. You're right, Gen, its like being wrapped in nice guitars. Me wub.

Re: EXCLUSIVE: Camden Crawl for free tonight!

Its a spelling mistake. He clearly meant to type "pwn".

Brendan Benson - Spit It Out

Gah, not Teenage Fanclub.

He's really, really good live. Still not sure about the new album, though.

Re: Good Lord! It's An Arcade Fire UK Tour!

Check out the KRCW website for a session, and the Pitchfork interview with them where they mentioned their live act. Its apparently very moving and improvises on the record somewhat. I can't wait, personally.

Before the dawn... M83 head out with Secret Machin

Which way up is this bill? I hope its M83 top.

Re: The Stills a video of Love & Death and Broken

Also, your weblog makes me both laugh and nod my head in agreement.

Re: The Stills a video of Love & Death and Broken

Damn right. A lot of people kinda write them off.

Corrigan - Can Out Front / Medicine Stick

Corrigan is just a guy. I don't know if you remember "How To Hang Off A Rope", came out in 2002 if memory serves. Utterly brilliant record, completely ignored by almost everyone.

Seek out "Waterballad". That is just... genius. I'm looking forwards to hearing this new stuff.

Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous

Bah.

Somehow, its just that little bit too close to the bone in places. It does still have some great moments as well.

I think you're right, Mr Diver, it will sell millions. Just stick it on the coffee table next to Dido. :(

Re: A Month in Records: January 2005

Seconded.

Re: Dälek - Absence

This is... hard shit.

However, it is bloody marvellous.

Re: Razorlight - no more albums?

Oh my god.

This is the single best Diver post ever.

The Arcade Fire - Funeral

Great bit of writing.

This record is getting huge, and they are gonna be huge. Worthy of the praise, I'd say.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Wor

It is good.

For me, they're never going to top Madonna. That was just... wow.

And Will You Smile For Me is in some crazy time signature, which is why it sounds a bit odd.

Re: Arcade Fire: release early on iTunes

I like 'em both. Why not?

Also, they're doing a London date, at Kings College Union in March. Get your tickets while you can.

Mainline - Black Honey

Uhm. What?

Re: LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem

Saw 'em last night. They're really, really great.

Really unassuming bunch of blokes, with this squat, muscular black lady rapping/singing. Two drumkits + drummers as well, which sounds fucking ace.

Re: Kasabian go super size

Sorry, are you insane?

Kasabian versus Trail Of Dead? If Conrad didn't politik them to death, Jason Reece would simply tear his shirt off and scream like a rabid gorilla before tearing them limb from limb.

Bring it on indeed. I'd like to see Kasabian somehow outplay TOD.

Re: Who will cut their hair now they're gone? - Un

Do you actually like any bands?

Re: Bez's 'cult following' makes him Big Bro' favo

Shurely some mistake?

They want to be the Stone Roses.

God Loves Records, so say Big Scary Monsters

Best headline EVAR.

Re: South By South West shapes up

$445. Ouch.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Oh lord. Don't Stand In The Flames is amazing. "deeeeee maaahhhhhhh". Its like electro MBV goodness. With handclaps. (at the end).

Re: Tip for 2005: Jeniferever bring their beautifu

fuck, that song is amazing.

Annie - Heartbeat

This is a good record. Promise. Annie is great.

"Anniemal" covers a lot of ground for a pop record, and to be fair, its a damn good one.

Re: Frances The Mute: revealed!

I suspect Diver is in fact DiS.

Just him. He occasionally uses pseudonyms, but now its just him. Maybe he ate all the other reviewers while listening to Isis and painting himself in their blood.

mmmm.

Re: Mars Volta fans: "What you're doing is f*cked"

Punk ethics?

I don't think Omar and Cedric were ever about "punk ethics". You can see from what they were doing in their side projects while ATDI was still going that all they wanted to do was to push the sound further and further. I guess they were tired of being five guys in a very good post-hardcore (or whatever) band. I think perhaps "prog ethics" might be better :)

Listen to Sparta. "The Other Three" had the punk ethic. Probably why Omar and Cedric got sick of them.

Re: Jetplane Landing - There Is No Courage Unless

Wow, this sounds great.

They are so, so good live.

Re: Ash announce special Xmas club show this Satur

Cheap drinks would be nice. :)
