yeah, this is a fair point...
I'm even listening to their Pukkelpop set now (cos I was there)...and it IS an amazing set.
I was also thinking today how it would be awesome to have a DJ 'battle' between Daft Punk and Justice...I would pay good money to see that.
Anyone seen Electroma?
Shit.
I love Gonzales. I wish I saw him tour his earlier stuff....but this new set sounds pretty cool.
ho hum.
hahah!
Kenilworth! I didn't know they were from Kenilworth, I lived a few miles from there and it is far from the gritty working class slum that they are trying to pretend they are from. Fuck, even Coventry isn't that bad, apart from it's shitawful road network....but then i really doubt they've written a song about that. I'd love to hear a song about how shit the coventry ring road is!
i hate this band, and I hate this fake working class bullshit.
yeah, pretty harsh...
'MOR' or not. She makes good music, has an amazing voice, and I am pretty much in love with her.
yeah, me too
i worry that this'll mean more instrumental stuff during the set, but they will no doubt play enough awesome classics to make it a sweet night.
yeah
i hate this band a lot.
so, so, so bad.
yeah
i love this song as much as I love the others, they are some truly awesome singles.
glad to see PTT finally getting a review on here too!
bring on the LP, i say.
yeah
they are awesome. Done some good Bloc Party remixes too.
wooah!
Pull Tiger Tail get a mention!...and a damn fine complimentary one at that. good work 'A bunch of drunk DiS writes' (if that is your real name!?).
doesn't really answer the question though...
....i mean, you have reviewed bands that would have prefered to be 'srsly yawn' rather than what was actaully written about them, so why not review Pull Tiger Tail?
....especially as I am sure that not everyone at DiS dislikes them?
and while we're at it, what the hell does ^ mean?
again...
seemingly no mention of Pull Tiger Tail. A band that definitely deserve a passing reference at least.
...whilst we're at it, any chance of a review for their single? (mine: it's awesome)
yeah
i don't think you've been listening that hard then. I find it pretty easy.
yeah,
when I put 'all' i was just being lazy. I know they've only had two since.
The Cut Chemist album has some high points too (generally it's really good)...and only today the 2na and Roots Manuva track came on my iPod, if them all breaking up means that there'll be more stuff like that then awesome.
i have never plucked up the couyrage to get anything from Ugly Duckling other than "Eye on the Gold Chain" (there's an awesoime Cut Chemist remix that samples Can)...is it good? which album should I go for?
to be honest...
...I don't think they've truely 'harmonised' either musically or as a band since Quality Control. All the albums since have sounded really detached, each member not really linking so well with the guy he followed...
I am kinda glad they split up, especially after Cut Chemist left I didn't really fancy their chances of coming up with anything as good as their early stuff. If it means more solo appearances, with the likes of DJ Format then all the better.
i do like these guys
just a little. might hit the academy with ox eagle lion man. could be a good night.
i haven't been as excited about an
album as I am about this right now. I am so skint it hurts, but I may well just have to sell a limb to get this!
huh?
ass? surely that's English for a type of Donkey? Shakespeare used it all the time if I recall?
i am too scared to 'customise'
i can't take the permanence of it all. it's crazy.
i also have no creative talent, so i know it will look shit too.
arghle,
anyone else having this problem?
free stickers, they aren't a gift; they are a curse.
well,
as you gave him this to review I'm not surprised you think it's for justified reasons....
I guess if everyone who reads DiS is, like John as cluseless about Missy as he is then it's a great review.
...but I just felt a little let down by it, thats all. I clicked the link hoping to read what someone who considered themselves a hip hop fan had to say about it....and i think thats what others who are complaining hoped for too.
In all fairness it's a testament to how unsure I am about the quality of this record that I was so dependent on a balanced review to give me some perspective...but with John's review it has no relevance to my musical taste at all. At the moment I have almost had this song on repeat, but I do admit that it could be consdered a slightly guilty pleasure.
...as to the complaints: i guess you can't please all the people all of the time, eh?
Though I do ask that any reasonably constructed criticism of a review is taken with good grace...as hard as it may be to stomach.
Ok, so
I guess this is territory that has been trodden to death many a time on DiS....but it just doesn't make much sense to me to hand someone a CD who clearly has absolutely no interest in this type of music. I am a shit reviewer, all cliches and bad imagery....but I reckon I could convey a better impression about the relative merits of this song within the genre than you have, John.
I am not calling into question you're overall ability as a reviewer, and generally neither are the other people, but surely it's not out or order to comment, or review a review, is it?
My review in short, for those that care....
"Using Apache is lazy, especially for someone that has rapped over some undoubtedly awesome beats (from Timbaland et al) in the past....but overall I like the song. If you like Missy's flow, then give this a listen. This is by now means Missy at her best, but even at 50% she can knock out a record that is more than worth a few minutes of your time."
it's 6th form stuff sure. but hey, there's a reason i'm not on the DiS books, eh?
My main issue though really is, it would be nice to see even the slightest nod towards an enthusiastic and knowledgeable hip-hop reviewer. diversification is not such a bad thing.
I totally agree...
I saw BEck do this set just before Radiohead headlined...and nothinng (not even Radiohead) could come close to delivering the sheer entertainment levels that Beck did. So. Good!
I was amazed he played 'Clap Hands' (my favourite of his recent tracks)...and it was then that the table percussion jam kicked in. So cool. The man really is amazing.
the intermission puppet based fillers are really funny too. The Radiohead dressing room trashing one at V was really funny (see youTube).
i am excited
no really, I am...
...Akira's stuff is awesome. Witty, interesting, and English.
Plus you can get alot of it for free on his myspace, check it out if you haven't already.
unless
they thinks it shit, i guess...
what is the single called? I thought i was hip and down with the Klaxons...but i guess not.
yeah, it cannot be said enough times
book the trains in advance! you can't just hop on!
and from Barcelona it's a long and expensive taxi ride.
the lineup isn't quite good enough for a repeat visit, so I have gone for Pukkelpop....but i most certainly will miss the beach/sun/showers/good looking foreign girls/holiday atmosphere.
haha
hoho
balls
to that. I think the last two albums have been amazing. 'Run' is a fantastically gorgeous song, and 'Vagabond' is nothing short of Becktastic.
bring on the new stuff!
i do
i do
if he really cares about childrens' futures...
....then he should stop making such god-awful music. as a role model he really is close to the bottom of the barrel.
you're a bit early!
...aren't you?
it doesn't happen for a fortnight! now that is keen.
Pull Tiger Tail
and !!! - Brilliant. I am contemplating somehow going to this gig and getting back to sleepy Warwickshire in time for work the next day! Can he do it? By jove its worth it. see you there!
get in.
i agree
Rhianna is heavy on the forehead but also brilliantly curvy <read: good boobs>, amerie has great legs though, and milian a cheeky smile.
it's too tough a decision. i abstain.
Camden's Koko scoops venue award
...not been since it reopened. shame.
Re: Beasties to release greatest hits
gotta love the Beastie Boys, but having said that....The Sounds of Science pretty much did it all for me, but as I have all their records i guess i'll have to ch-ch-check it out...but if it's the same as the Sounds of Science, then i'll be mad!
Beasties, you have been warned.
Vincent Vincent & The Villains - 'Blue Boy' / 'The Boy Who Killed Time'
N*E*R*D: not really dead
but what does it all mean?
...
Beck - Guero
i bought the super special addition one with a DVD disk with it...the videos are strangely hidden around the menu, and then i can't quite find the 100 remixes that it claims are on it....lucky i enjoy a challenge really!?! tho if anyone else can point me in the right direction i'd be happy to hear it.
nice review too. uh huh.
Re: Reading & Leeds Festival: Bands Announced
i've been to reading three times, and everytime it's been a blast...but it's mainly about the music, there aint much to do after but get drunk and shout at people for inanely banging steel drums like they have some samba rythm is something.
....won't be going this year, after hitting glastonbury and benicassim i have seen the way festivals should be (none more so than Benicassim). Can't wait for that. Gonna sell my granny and everything.
April UK tour for Antihero
tis london for me, jobs a good un.
Camden takes music execs to court
cos he now posts on a music message board?
haha, do you not get the irony there FcNikney??
Everytime I read these message boards I can always be sure that you are there somewhere making a complete tit out of yourself........
Antihero - How Antihero saved my life
The Beastie Boys - Ch-Check It Out
...and I'd be imtrested to hear some of the Beastie Boys competitors work?? I really can't think of a band that come close to the Beastie's beats and rhymes....bar maybe the 'female Beasties' that are Northern State, and they hardly eclipse them do they??
....and the single is far more of a progression from the Pauls Boutique work than you give them credit for.
Gareth; with writing of such quality I guess I'll be seeing you in the NME....
feel free to rip apart my overuse of the full stop, and the hideous grammar utilised within this post if it makes you feel better....but at least I am not going to try and call my ramblings a 'review'.
Anti'-Everything: Antihero Return
.....i guess the best thing is to wait until the download club starts and check them out for yourself.
you wont be sorry for long.
Anti'-Everything: Antihero Return
thats good news! Just checked out their new site too, funking ace it is to be sure.
"everything's coming up Millhouse!"
Somewhere Only We Moan: Why I Hate Keane
like i said quit wasting time with Keane, and suggest something positive.
Somewhere Only We Moan: Why I Hate Keane
as opposed to championing some new band, you (given the title) ironically whine/moan about a band that have already received a large amount of airplay.
Stupidly your ramblings will not influence people to join your malicious course...as no doubt they will have been unable to escape the airplay and exposure this band have received and hence made up their own minds.
So, you waste time and effort on a band (and also it would seem a 'bland movement') when you could be introducing people to the underplayed, deserving, innovative, interesting bands that you say are being forced into the shadows; discarded and forgotten.
To me your article is hypocritical and pointless, and i recommend you try spending your time and effort in a more constructive fashion.
Save the Night and Day Café!
this annoys me so much!
it's like when people move near airports and then complain about the aircraft flying overhead!
if the club was there before they bought the house, and has been operating in the same way for 13 years, then his house would have been so cheap because of it.
he can hardly claim that he didn't notice the club next door!??!?
I have never even been to manchester, (tho I'm not a Man Utd fan)....but I will happily sign the petition.
The council should just laugh at him and tell him to shut up. However, if they do side with him I think every day for as long as it takes a different person should stand outside his house and set a car alarm off.
sign up!
Back Of The Net: Farm Song Chosen As England Anthem
or is that a load of racist elitist claptrap?
lets have a heated debate!
i have a slight issue with rereleasing a song as the footie anthem....if we can't break the mold of the past through music then what chance have we of doing it through football....???for that reason England are gonna crash out pretty quick. quicker than usual that is.
Tho I am counting my blessing those chavscumciderfuelledfightnedperryscooterridingnikewearingnicknamestealingwannabeeidiotsblazingsquad didn't get it.
<RANT OVER>
Beastie Boys: New Single & Album
I have felt like the rhyming has gone a bit down-hill, 'in a world gone mad' really made me cringe even though I love the Beastie Boys more than any other band, but the beats and tunes are so good that you soon forget about the slightly suspect lyrics.
best album? thats a hard one....but the I would recommend the DVD anthology as possibly the best example of DVD power available. I just wish that I could have a CD of some of the remixes too.
However, its gotta be said I refuse to buy the new album if they don't tour. I missed out on the hello nasty tour cos I had an exam......I had a bad sense of priorities back then.
fingers crossed that this album is gonna be as good as all the others!

even themselves
it's a hate filled place...i mean they even hated the Eiffel Tower. De Gaulle? They hated him too. Croissants? They hate them even more than the Eiffel Tower and De Gaulle put together.
....
...ok so the last bit might not be true...
...or even the first two bits...
hey ho.
