why the pressing need to equate people like adele to

amazing black female singers like Miss Scott or Badu? Inevitably Adele will be showered with praise even though winehouse is the ruler of non-black female soul artists.

um LCD Soundsystem are your countrymen

so it's not a british thing. I voted for the shins, they did well.

um people who complain about the type of music on the list are forgetting what site they're on.

The shins for me

I have only heard cuts from some of the others and otherwise not at all.

I believe that a bit like the shock of driving past

a motor accident - people are just glued to these shows despite complaining about them constantly and enjoying something to talk about in their otherwise bore-infested lives. Would the British office be the same without the dullard section rattling on about how they want so and so to win or how x was out of tune last week? People derive pleasure from the melodrama too and like to see the workings of a programme that claims to make stars. Some viewers are still taken in by the idea that if they go on these shows they can quit that dead end job, stop going to school and be all famous without realising that the realities of being a successful musician or artists yep even a pop one are alot tougher and require more effort than things like the x factor, Idol, fame academy, musicool and now this show.

There are also the ghoulish viewers who drop out after the audition stages and perpetuate reality tv while condeming it in the same breath. They enjoy laughing it up with friends in front of the idiot box before going out on a Saturday and making fun of the hapless 'weirdos and deadbeats' who turn up to be humiliated by Cowell but they add to the viewing figures anyway and are as much a part of the whole circus as the devotees who turn up to the finals with images of their favourites emblazoned on cheap cotton t-shirts and one finger pressed on send text to that easily memorable 883322 etc number.

Point being, it still makes watchable tv even if you hate its empty hearted, robotic guts because people are still tuning in, because on Saturday there are no alternatives unless Strictly come prancing suits your tastes, granny can't go out, many young kids deluded into thinking they can be popstars instead of hold real ambitions can't go out, couples don't want to go out and the rest are just killing time and the producers make it so easy for people to VOTE NOW, flashing those numbers constantly on the screen but reiterating that your 50p will be lost if you vote before the lines open and you've seen all the ACTS.There's money to be made and people like Cowell and Fuller and the 'judges' are the ones making it. That's why Sharon Osbourne walks out of the show then comes crawling back the week later, she gets her money, viewing figures rise. All.so.cynical. It is lucrative for the judging panel, I'd argue one or two can't afford to not be a part of the hideous machine. Minogue for example is being offered more things than she can shake a stick at now because of her appearance. she's releasing a new single with Jason Nevins (remember him?)and FHM would quite like some pictures of her.

Those 'bands' in the channel 4v branches of realmusicitytv are not PROPER as you say, they're a mix of naive fledglings who just want their band heard and stage school precocious brats who aren't used to hearing the phrases 'no' and 'you can't' They want fame now and their arrogant enough to believe what they're doing is true, unique and worth subjecting the general public to. The reason their on the show is that they know nothing about the music industry or have gone through every possible audition in the Stage and decided they may as well dance with a more powerful devil than some chancer who's setting up a new gimmicky all-girl band to rival Girls Aloud.

Reality tv is still biting everyone in the arse and people still feel satisfied and repulsed by it in equal measure but not enough to press the off button because isn't that that girl who happy slapped some other girl and it got posted on youtube, my god what can she have to say for herself? The watching continues.

DiS love incestuous

This isn't news, outside of the forum what does stabby mean?

title is in poor taste.....

why not explore other genres? I find indie ultra boring at the moment. It's not just the over exposed like this lot that are incredibly dull. Name one newish indie band that really excite you?

True Adventures

They're good and the brains behind it is a mate.

After that I could care less. I haven't heard anyone to get excited about yet.

she has what

Americans call chutzpah. She seemed like she was overjoyed to be on tv.

How can anyone hate Joe Mace, he's like wallpaper. I actually think Steve Jones is the most annoying C/T 4 person at the moment. Miquita seems like a fish out of water and Alex Zane is great but Alexa just makes popworld even more MTV than it already looks.

You need a really good voice to

get away with the 60s girl pop thing and the blonde that was meant to carry the first song was so badly out of tune it was painful. I think the one with the glasses carries that band and should go solo now.

DPT - Yeah they're very Libertines outtakes aren't they and they don't seem that comfortable together. I notice Barat hasn't been doing many interviews letting Hammond take them instead as if they expect the Pete subject to dominate their press coverage. If they'd made a good album that wouldn't happen so much. All the reviews I've seen have called WTA average. I think this single is their only half decent song even though it's derivative and lacks real spirit. It's still better than the others they've previewed.

I don't think

any of them could survive on their own as with every other British girl band - there isn't one archetypal girl group I believe could go far if one disbanded and went solo(in Britain) It seems people here are much more accepting of yanks doing that a la Beyonce/Left Eye and even then the star never shines as bright as when they were part of a quartet/trio.

hmm I don't really find her as unattractive as people say compared to the other two. All I can say is that they occasionally turn out a good pop song that outclasses that coven of guilty pleasures for males known as girls aloud's entire and brief back catalogue.

I have already heard some of those

like demo versions and Fear Of Falling. They should have stuck the original I want you to stay on it too. I wouldn't buy it because they're doing new songs and the new album is coming late this year.

I have a few of those

I rate a few of those. BUT The Cribs? Honestly?

the reviewer

didn't compare their sound to AM OR The Bravery really - it was a point about their authenticity that probably fleshed up Bravery allusions.

Sure TOTP has little to do with longevity and mainstream success to fans but outside of that little realm of people who go to see them wearing their devotion on their sleeves I took that the reviewer was saying they don't have mass appeal because they lack something.

This is where I agree with the review. Having listened to Alligator I just didn't take much from what I heard it seemed to be affecting emotion rather than resonating any real feeling especially from the singer.

Rather than the flag imagery being amazing, astounding or peerless it actually appears forced.

I think I could count 3 songs I liked on Alligator. one was Daughters...the rest was just un engaging to me.

News

isn't meant to be the indie times on here. Surely you read more than this site for music news? If it holds some pop cultural relevance why shouldn't they deliver a humourous report on it.

It isn't need to know info but then hasn't DiS reported on these kind of things for a long time? It's never had straight music news without the stories that took digs at pop cult figures.

Re: Okereke concerned by non-essential press quest

Some people want to hear whathe has to say Lyle.

He's been forced into spokesman position for the band and it's no surprise after his words are twisted so much that he doesn't want to speak anymore. He should just do what some musicians do and start refusing interviews. Of course their record company work them like dogs so he probably wouldn't get away with it. Maybe it's time the others spoke. Does Russell have more than a big flap of hair?

He's also not posh really - that seems to be used alot to put someone down on this website - background is neither here nor there. If he's miserable and cold he has a right to be. The band generally get painted as miserbalists anyway. How many detractors have met them?

Re: Fugees dates: tickets probably already gone

Erm the fugees did write their own rhymes until they began covering Marley tracks which were very pointless. Lauryn Hill's Miseducation is one of the best albums I've ever heard and definitely one of the best hip hop soul albums ever recorded. The Fugees appeal was always universal because parents saw where their influences came from - not a million miles from roots reggae or old reggae classics. Kids liked the hip hop/rhyming aspect.

The Black Eyed Peas are just in the music industry for the money. Still they know a catchy tune and as pop goes they aren't the worst around. Look at all those no brain bands churning out gack and getting positive attention on DiS - Girls Aloud, Rachel Stevens, Sugababes and Mcfly.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

You can get home on a Sunday around Manchester - the further out you live - less the chance of getting home.

Diver why were you not at on the verge on saturday. That was disappointing.

Re: Antony And The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

I don't get the Buckley comparison. I absolutely love Buckley - Grace and other tracks besides but when I saw A+J on Jools I thought the catch in his voice was extremely off putting and he's near incoherent. I thought that style of voice was known as AFFECTED which Jeff Buckley's is most certainly not. I also dig Otis Redding and his voice is nowehere near that either. I don't hate A+J but personally that voice stops me from wanting to hear or purchase that album no matter how much my friend says it is wonderful.

Guillemots - I Saw Such Things In My Sleep EP

They have one passable song - mildly flawed is a nice way to put crap.

Re: Reading/Leeds: Review

No it was badly phrased. I never said Crablin was prejudiced if you bothered to read my post. I said it could be misconstrued that way.

Re: Reading/Leeds: Review

Sorry Crablin but look at the pats on the back you're getting and where they come from or rather who.

It reads in a resentment slant and from some point of ignorance. If you as a journalist cannot adequately get the point you meant across perhaps you should have left that little gem out.

Killykill's testament below suggests its still a multi cultural affair in fact more so than the carnivals in Leeds and Manchester.

I'm just telling you how that sentence can be misconstrued and that it is a fact that this site allows certain views to go unchecked apart from LIMEY. That's a terrible insult, she had to go.

Reading/Leeds: Review

Hmm no wonder DiS attracts some of the people it does with remarks like the one about Notting Hill, very little Englander, well done DiS!

Re: Williams returns with a "gangster opera"

All the pre release build up suggested he'd given up on comedy rap and was now trying his hand at cod reggae probably after listening to too much Bob Marley and Finlay Quaye. So it's hip hop again now?! Good luck to him.

Re: Envelopes - Demon

Isabelle and Leonard - dress up so nice in leotards- what's not to like.

Oh plus the song about being in the country with Steve Mcqueen.

I like this album, it is good and nice and gentle.

Re: Field Music - Field Music

It's subjective I suppose but I just didn't get excited in the same way as I did by maximo Park and The Futureheads - those two are just more fun, more tuneful, more exciting and as live prospects enticing. From the FM album I don't think I'd be enthralled by one of their shows. As I said some of the songs are good but there is alot of filler. I didn't find anything new in it either.

Re: Field Music - Field Music

This album drifted a bit too much for me to get excited. Some of the songs are really good but there are points where nothing seems to be happening and its carelessly wrapped up in itself. NME and the papers love it but I didn't. I'd say they're the worst of the north east's big hitters.

No avoid, they're a one good song band.

Re: Editors - The Back Room

haha The Busted comment is quite funny.

I like this album - someone borrowed it- will I see it again?

Re: Rupert Murdoch buys Myspace

CLASS that was my first concern - poor Tom. How come the toon makes him look rich AND hot???

Re: Ravonettes have album pending. They tour to su

I agree 100%

I hear The Monkeys are good Amgibbons!

Love In A Trashcan is so good that to find out they are crap live is a big disappointment, too focused on being cool.

Re: Summer

The reviewer mentioned that JZ's alb was a summer album so I was saying OM's album is the better summer pick. ST doesn't have a duff track on it while HS is made up of unsatisfying/half baked tracks with no ideas/sense in the lyrics and a tendency to amble along whilst throwing the listener at non specific points throughtout the album. Some of it works, mainly Tindale's girlish/coquettish whimsy best used on Go Tell The World but to be honest ST shines brighter as an album to champion. It didn't get a review on here did it? I suppose I'm wondering why this album is on DiS' radar and Sunlandic isn't.

I wouldn't compare their sounds but I'd say they both aim at making music that skips along, is tripped out and laid back mellowed out cool on their respective efforts and that Sunlandic is the most successful at it. It's subtle and multi layered whilst HS seems full of hot air and vague drug references to lend it some kind of kudos, I think it pretends to be so much and delivers so little as I have said above.

Re: eh

But OM just have far superior songs, this album is lipgloss, looks delicious on the surface, tastes of nothing. As you say some of the tracks are good stuff esp Go Tell The World but I was expecting more. It seems like a record with half a heart.

Sunlandic Twins is the definitive soundtrack to summer 2005. Oslo In The Summertime, The Party's Crashing Us, I Was Never Young and Reprobate Immortals are just some of the songs that makes this one of my albs of the year.

eh

I personally found this album completely lacking in substance. However the review is an accurate picture of its faults, not so sure about the positive slant. I don't feel it's full of pop gems. People should buy Of Montreals Sunlandic Twins instead.

Re: Art Brut attacked by grime crew

It's alright, nothing special. It seems to be more novelty than anything else.

Re: The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love

It's a nice, catchy take on the song but not the best on the Futures album, that kind of ill informed comment does them an injustice.

Re: WE BELIEVE IN MUSIC (or we think we do)

So from this whole thread all I got was a headache, especially thanks to Weymart. Everyone who likes BP will have already bought the album/listed it as a to buy. Therefore this just turns into another Are Bloc Party good or bad thread with massive bouts of repetetive slagging. It's become like the NME in the sense that the same artists/bands seem to be up for discussion all the time. For once, though I like BP I'm happy to say, Change the damn record!

Re: Strip club brawl lands Kid Rock in police cust

check out his ratings on dis, pitiful.

Maximo Park - "As far as we are concerned, there's

They have a good rating on here, I'm looking forward to seeing them, if it doesn't all sell out.

Re: Take Me Out... for some fizzy pop

I don't think FF were asked to have their name put on it. I thought that the company were just doing that in tribute(and for money natch). How many singles have they released off FF the album, that's a more interesting question.

Re: Aguliera to make babies with Bratman

I had no idea her career had sunk. Thought she was just off playing happy families.

Re: Limp Bizkit: new album recorded in Prague

Hahaha Diver that was funny.

Re: Towers... Cambridge gig chaos

I don't remember NME saying TOL were good, they just reported on the chaos and image I thought.

Re: '...Mama'-mia! Scissor Sisters win three Brits

Don't be tight! It was made more boring by the same people winning the few awards they gave out. You wouldn't think it had been a good year for British music and music in general looking at the brits and it's performances which were dire. Morrisey was right to jump ship 'lastminute.com' as the annoying Robbie Williams put it.

Re: Towers... Cambridge gig chaos

I've only heard bad things about this band. I've never heard a song yet somehow people are talking about them and they had a small amount of press coverage.

Re: Killers confirmed for this year's Oxegen Festi

There are alot more lyrically lacking bands than The Killers around. It's just that those bands aren't popular enough for the average disers scorn or they pull out a good tune. I think The Killers can muster some good stuff, Hot Fuss is a pretty decent debut.

Re: You talking to my bird? New Rhodes dumped from

Funny stuff this story. I don't have a problem with talking at gigs but being louder than the band is out of order. I second the couples rant.

Re: Killers confirmed for this year's Oxegen Festi

Look at the posing in that pic! Hilarious. Brandon looks good though.
