and now I have it...
and I am massively underwhelmed.
Each track follows the format of ethereal sub sigur ros atmospherics / vocals with processed industrial drums. Which sounds great and all, but over the course of 10 tracks begins to pall and the 2 elements don't fit together in any meaningful or coherent way.
Have they ever done a cover of Bright Eyes?
They should do a cover of Bright Eyes.
tis better than any Bright Eyes album
and I love Bright Eyes albums
A sculpture is a sculpture!
I am very excited.
Finally a UK band to rival the songwriting genius of the Mountain Goats. Yay.
Interesting that the location for hearing this
features so prominently as I've listened to this in several places now and the best was... actually in a hammock. Sounds a bit pat I know but it really worked as a soundtrack on headphones to swinging gently and watching clouds go by.
CIRCLE TAKES THE SQUARE???
When? When??? I need more CTTS *sobs*
just so as you know
it's a video album not just an audio recording. You can watch Thom Drum on your ipod. Which has been an ambition of mine for as long as I can remember.
I've just seen the tracklisting for the
bonus remix cd that comes with this. Oh my God. Remixes by James Plotkin, Jesu and bizarely Birchville Cat Motel to name but three. I am now very very stoked about hearing this.
what would be an example of
'backing up his opinons with any information or mention'?
He has to produce concrete objective evidence to back up a subjective point of view? WTF? How? Why?
He doesn't like it, he's explained why - some of us agree, some of us disagree: isn't that the very essence of music reviews and all that they can ever hope to achieve.
I have read A LOT more pretentious reviews of music than this incidentally.
I predicted the backlash
and lo it appears below.
Call me MrNostradamusSir...
Totally agree
Doubtless the backlash will come and someone will point out that we're all being indie snobs but I would rather be an indie snob than someone who accepted or celebrated mediocrity.
I got 'Petitioning the Empty Sky'
for Fathers' Day last year. I may have dropped a few hints.
but
if you can't spell definitely you don't get to have an opinion.
Sorry. I don't make the rules.
You should construct this house.
Then get some architects round to review your house out of ten...
Anyway it's a great record and one that definitely rewards repeated listens.
I saw them on Monday the 7th
at Scala, and they were amazing! Maybe they had an off night immediately afterwards or maybe this reviewer just doesn't like them. I know it sounds pretentious but I think they really transcend their politics, listening to them ending with 'hold on to each other' it was so much more about the personal than the political.
yeah and where's the tindersticks review?
They're a band I really want to read a review before I buy as there was a definite slump in quality after the first 3 albums.
On a lighter note
Let airplanes circle overhead FTW!
I think the problem is that
In no other genre does 'innovation' sit so highly the list of what is regarded to be a measure of success. E.g. off the top of my head -
To write a succesful pop song:
1) Good vocals
2) Catchy melody
3) Up-tempo sing-a-long quality
To write a good post-rock record:
1) innovation
2) emotional involvement
3) sound production
If we expect post rock (or any genre)to be innovative across the board we are dooming it to failure. Any genre has a small percentage of innovators and a large number of (more or less successful) copyists.
This Will destroy You are not as innovative as EITS but they still sound (nearly) as good. In any other genre they would be praised to the rafters but not PR because of our assumptions about the prioritisation of innovation.

As a massive PJ Harvey fanboy
I feel I need to register my love, even though it's not my favourite Peej album by a long stretch. Hmmmm tricky.
