Without reading the OMM article it's hard to comment on how it comes across. But, as passionate as McMahon's rant is, I take issue with his proposal rock music "shouldn't be about intelligence." If he has any taste in music worth celebrating, McMahon would probably find that most of the bands he loved (from The Smiths to Joy Division to The Beatles) married instinctive, emotionally powerful ideas and melodies to very intelligent and creative arrangements and compositions. And "the working classes" whose taste he professes to defend are positively in love with intelligent art and intelligent music - there's a reason that Radiohead and The Stone Roses are more popular than The Pigeon Detectives or The View. "Maths, science and architecture are the enemies of rock music..." Let me give you the names of some of your enemies then; Louis Pasteur, Alan Turing, Frank Lloyd Wright...

Of course, McMahon knows all this and has done his paper and himself a world of good by stimulating this particular debate...

Long live nerd-dom!

It sounds like a Brass Eye wind-up

"SCRARP [Sound Caught Resonating At Roaming Pitches] calls on the goverment to take measures to help assure the future of lower frequencies."

Probably registered along with GEFAFWISP, AAAAAAAZ, WOFDCAP and FUK'D and BOMB'D...

This is without doubt the greatest news article that has ever appeared on these hallowed HTML pages.

But then again, I'm easily impressed, so what do I know.

"Considered the [Russians] to be sub-human; the wartime equivalent of a 1.3 from Pitchfork."

Hehehe. ;-)

Good article. Cardamone seems much more level-headed than I imagined he'd be.

I wouldn't assume just because a record receives a 9/10 review that it's a statement of the reviewer's belief that the record will "stand the test of time". It's more likely that he just thinks it's a great record that deserves substantial acclaim (which it does, in my opinion anyway).

Does it contain songs as memorable as the classics you mentioned? Probably not, no. But that's not to deny that the album is something of a quiet piece of brilliance with gorgeous melodies and wonderful instrumental playing.

I've always maintained Masterplan as being equal in quality to Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory. Heck, even some of the b-side from the Be Here Now era are majestic. Have you heard Going Nowhere from the Stand By Me single? Tops most of their output since 2000. Gorgeous melody and beautiful use of brass instrumentation married to one of Gallagher's finest lyrics.

Hey, Supersonic ain't meaningless ;-)

"I'm feeling supersonic/
Give me gin & tonic"...

How to express feeling "up".

"A Storm In Heaven ... a underrated british psychadelic masterpeice imho"

Definitely :-)

I remember playing it to a bunch of pals around the time that Urban Hymns was massive and watching the confusion spread.

They were confused in a good way, though.

Which was nice.

Sorry oceanRain but, 10 years after Britpop, I know of nobody who listens to Blur's mid-90's albums. Everyone still digs out Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory from time to time and I can't see that situation changing.

Fine Article

One of the finest bands in the history of popular music.

The reasons for their longevity? Well, in my humble opinion -

They've been a formative component of many people's childhood/adolescence and as the sparkplug for igniting their love of music.

They've continued to produce work that, while eminently unfashionable, still demands attention.

As cliched as it sounds, they mean it, maaan.

Deadful Pity...

Hugely underappreciated, brilliant band. They'll be missed around here.

I agree...

I'd rate him almost as highly as Stealthy for sheer entertainment value.

A Truly Excellent

... and criminally undiscovered band. One of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen. For anyone who likes this EP, you should check out their previous two albums (available on the interweb outside of Ireland, I believe).

Why not trei a holiday in Sveden this year?

The Departure - "In 20 years it’s not going to be what we look like that matters"

Just saw these guys play the Oxegen festival. I can't remember another band that appeared as studied, manufactured, contrived and so ruthlessly designed and calculated to appeal to the hearts and minds of indie fans worldwide. They reference all the right bands - The Smiths and Radiohead (attention to lyrics), Gang Of Four (riffs and grooves), Suede (vocal delivery) and any number of 80's bands that all of a sudden it's fashionable to like nowadays. Everything about them feels derivative and selfconscious - not an original idea between the 5 of them. As for their appearance, my girlfriend said it best - "They're a boy band in all but name! There's the geeky one (lead guitarist), the cute one (vocalist), the cool one (bassist), the tough one (guitarist) and the normal one (drummer)." How guys like this can get Parlophone's attention is beyond me....

Re: EXCLUSIVE: 65 Days of Youthmovie - Tour

For Heaven's sake, man, play an Irish date soon! :-)

Hot Hot Heat - Elevator

I get the same sense of sheer joy from listening to Hot Hot Heat as I do from hearing bands like The La's - unabashed guitar pop that feels alive. :-)

4 screen action!: Keifer goes musical

Dear God, PLEEEASE let this be as brilliant/awful as it sounds :-)

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine

The more commercial (shock!) aspects of Miss Machine are light years ahead of what normally produces music like this and it's just an example of DEP fucking with convention and expanding their boundaries. End. Of. Story.

Hardcore enthusiasts refusing to acknowledge this albums' existence are roughly akin to the cardinals who denounced Galileo. To my mind, it's album of the year so far - accessible to anyone who's never even heard of hardcore. By the way, who decides what genre to classify bands? RealPlayer has DEP classified as "metalcore".
